The Colorado College Summer Music Festival<\/strong><\/a> opens this year’s Intermezzo Season<\/strong><\/a> with \u201cThe Art of Perseverance: Sounds of Hope and Restoration<\/a>\u201d beginning at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 5<\/strong>, with performances by festival faculty Mark Fewer<\/a>, violin<\/em>; Phillip Ying<\/a>, viola<\/em>; David Ying<\/a>, cello<\/em>; SMF Music Director Susan Grace<\/a>, piano<\/em>; and featured guests CC principal voice instructor Jennifer DeDominici<\/a>, mezzo-soprano<\/em>, and CC violin instructor Jeri Jorgensen<\/a>. <\/div>\n
The program will include a wide range of music that explores themes of human fragility and how we persevere through difficult times, to include movements from two Brahms piano quartets<\/strong>, a movement from Messiaen’s Quartet for the End of Time<\/em><\/strong>, D’Rivera’s Danz\u00f3n (Memories)<\/em><\/strong>, and songs from Heggie’s Camille Claudel: Into the Fire<\/em><\/strong>.<\/div>\n
The concert also includes a wealth of CC student participation. Poetry that corresponds to the music will be chosen and read by Jane Hilberry<\/a>\u2019s poetry students<\/strong>: Iyanla Ayite \u201925, Janeiya Porter \u201926, Henry Freedman \u201923, Mary Andrews \u201923, Keiko Ito \u201926, and Anna Heimel \u201923. Music students Lillie Gray \u201926 on violin, Jacob Lynn-Palevsky \u201923 on cello, and Forrest Tucker \u201924 on piano will play Carlos Simon\u2019s piano trio be still and know<\/em><\/strong>, and Tucker and Lincoln Grench \u201923 will perform Shostakovich\u2019s Concertino for 2 pianos<\/strong>. Performing “Everything Else”<\/strong> from Next to Normal<\/em> will be Willo Abel Burglechner \u201923, baritone<\/em> (alternate vocalist: Kiara Butts \u201923, mezzo-soprano<\/em>), with accompanist Daniel Brink<\/a>, piano<\/em>. <\/div>\n
“Beginning this fall, we began thinking about the conversations around us at the college and with others in our community \u2013 conversations about the challenging moments in our lives. Emerging from Covid, unforeseen tragedies of illness and death, war, gun violence, natural disasters \u2013 such events continue to surround us,” Grace said. “As we contemplate the cumulative impact of these events and our responses to them, we want to acknowledge how art and music can be a part of how we continue to find beauty, hope, courage, empathy, and perhaps transcendence.” <\/div>\n
