It’s a CC Half-block Course this January with an immersive 9-day on-site experience at <\/strong><\/span>Mattel Headquarters in LA, <\/strong> <\/span><\/span>home to Barbie, Hot Wheels, Fisher-Price, and more.<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

It’s open to sophomores or higher, with a declared major.<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

It is a project-based, small group, experiential learning course <\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

led by Prof. Dan Johnson and Prof. Ryan Banagale.<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The course fee is $1,650 and does not include airfare, however…<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

SUMMER BLOCKS AWAY FAIR<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Thursday, November 30<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

12:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

in the Worner Center<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

All approved CC Summer Blocks Away will be there to introduce their courses and their destinations for summer study away.  It is the one-stop shop to compare all the options and find the perfect summer study away opportunity for you. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

How do I apply for a Summer Block Away?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

It is pretty simple, really.  Applications will opon on Summit on Nov. 30, the same day as the fair. <\/span><\/p>\n

Just visit the Summit page dedicated to Global Education and you will see all the offerings available. Complete the application for the program (or programs) you prefer, and you are also automatically applying for aid as well. <\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Applicaotins remain open until January 22, so you have all of Winter Break to consider your options if you wish.   <\/span>Once applications are closed on January 22, all rosters will be reviewed and aid will be awarded by February 9th.  Apps will then re-open for late applications. <\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

We do recommend applying early if you can, as some programs use rolling admissions and may close before January 22.  <\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Aid is avaialble to students approved to join a program who normally receive need-based aid to attend CC. An aid award can range from 20% of the anticipated cost of the program (program fee + estimated airfare) up to 90% coverage.   <\/span><\/p>\n

What is a Wild Card and how does it apply to Summer Study Away?<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

A Wild Card is basically a guarantee that every student will not pay tuition for the first summer course they take at CC.  It applies to on-campus and off-campus summer courses offered by CC, and it is automatically applied to remove the tuition charge the first time you enroll in a summer course. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

It cannot be used for academic year courses or courses offered outside of CC, but it does apply to all CC Summer Blocks Away.  It removes the tuition fee, but not the program fee (travel expenses).  That is what the Summer Block Aid is designed to do. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

What if None of the Summer Blocks Away Work for Me?<\/span><\/strong><\/span> <\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

If there is not a summer block which meets your educational goals, you can petition (also on Summit) for an independent summer study away program offered by any accredited provider or partner.  Several of CC’s semester away partners also offer summer courses.  However, no CC aid can be used for a non-CC summer course, so the full cost of any non-CC summer program abroad would be yours to cover.  It is an optoin, but we always recommend looking at the CC Blocks Away first.  Even if there is not one that speaks to your major, there is almost certainly a course that will help you with graduation requirements or interest you as an elective. <\/span><\/span><\/span> <\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Expect to see advertising for the CC Summer Blocks Away before we get to the Fair on November 30, and you can always speak to faculty about their course abroad this summer, or come to the fair to look at all of them all at once. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

If you are interested in studying Mandarin in East Asia (Hong Kong, Taiwan, possibly Shanghai as well), Russian language in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, or Intermediate Italian in the heart of Italy, be sure to complete your application on Summit by December 1st, though we would always say that earlier is better. <\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

These Block 7-8 half-semester programs offer two blocks of immersive language and cultural study.  There is no program fee with these programs for any student who lives on campus with a full meal plan.  Students living off campus or with a reduced meal plan would have a program fee to cover housing and meals in the host countries.  <\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

 WHAT NEXT?<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Just a quick reminder that if you have been approved by the faculty leader for a block away for Fall 2023 or Spring 2024, you should return to Summit to complete the post-acceptance forms and confirm your intention to join the course.  This will give the faculty the ability to provide you with the registration code needed so you can enroll in Banner and locks in your seat.  <\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

CHECK YOUR PASSPORT<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

A reminder to check your passport and make sure that it is valid at least 6 months past the end of your study away program.  Many countries require this 6-month buffer and may not let you board the plane if your passport expires too soon after the program and your return flight date. <\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

ORIENTATION MEETINGS<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

All blocks away have predeparture orientation meetings, typically 1-2 blocks before departure.  If you are not sure if you know when the meeting will be scheduled, please speak with your course’s faculty leader.  You do not want to miss vital information about the course, the travel plan, course expectations, and travel recommendations. <\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

THINKING OF WITHDRAWAL?<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

If you are considering withdrawing from the program, please remember to do so BEFORE THE WITHDRAWAL DEADLINE.   <\/strong>Late withdrawal can lead to significant financial commitment to a program you won’t be joining, sometimes as much as 100% of the program fee.  If you are unsure if you can join the block away course, we recommend speaking with the faculty leader and making a decision before the deadline.  Deadlines for upcoming blocks are:<\/span> <\/p>\n

WAITLISTED FOR A PROGRAM?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

This is not uncommon.  Students dropping from programs is also very common, and since being on the waitlist commits you to nothing, there is no harm in staying on the waitlist for a program.  Of course, look into other summer plans, but it is possible for faculty to call students up from the waitlist up until the first day of the block before the program’s block, for example, the first day of Block 5 for a Block 6 program.  If you are invited to join a program, we will review your application for aid eligibility at that time and will notify you before you are asked to commit to the program.  Sometimes a bit of patience can really pay off.<\/span> <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n\n\n\n

WHEN WILL NEXT YEAR’S BLOCKS AWAY BE KNOWN?<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Proposals are coming in for Off-Campus Blocks to be offered in the 2024-2025 academic year.  The full list of approved off-campus blocks will be available in January of 2024, with all the Blocks Away present at our February 1st Study Away Fair in Block 5, well before pre-registration occurs in Block 7. <\/p>\n
