Announcing the 2024-2025 Off-Campus Blocks<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

The Study Away Fair is only 1 month away (February 1st), but here is your Sneak Preview of all the individual off-campus blocks being offered next year, so you can start shopping for the best option for you before you visit the programs at the Fair. <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

BK 2: Greek Archaeology:<\/span> Prof. Sanjaya Thakur & Prof. Henry Fricke<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

The course examines the geologic history of the eastern Mediterranean basin and examines the impact of geologic and other environmental changes and events on cultures in ancient Greece and in the modern period through several case studies.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

BK 2: Mathematical Symmetry in Spain:<\/span> MA340, Prof. Molly Moran<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

The study of symmetry from a mathematical perspective. Symmetry groups of bounded figures, frieze patterns and wallpaper patterns in the Euclidean plane will be classified using the Mosaics, tiling, art, and architecture in Southern Spain as motivation.<\/span><\/p>\n

BK 3: Gazing in Italy: PY130: <\/span>Prof. Tomi-Ann Roberts<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

In both a classroom and in the \u201claboratory\u201d of the museums, chapels, galleries, gardens and squares of Florence and Siena Italy, this course will examine how we \u201csee,\u201d \u201clook,\u201d \u201cgaze,\u201d \u201cbehold\u201d works of art, theories and research on facial and bodily expression and embodiment, notions of individualism and identity. the role of empathy in aesthetic experience, and gender and sexuality, objectification, “the male gaze,”power<\/span><\/p>\n

BK 4: In the Footsteps of Bach (Germany):<\/span> MU398, Prof. Ofer Ben-Amots<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

With study at Leuphana University in L\u00fcneburg, in Eisenach, Weimar, Arnstadt, K\u00f6then and Leipzig  we will focus on and analyze related compositions, while exploring both the historical and social aspects of Bach’s time as we attend many concerts of Bach\u2019s music.<\/span><\/p>\n

BK 4: Performance Away-India: <\/span>DA\/TH232, Prof. Pallavi Sriram<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

This course introduces students to dynamic contemporary arts scenes in India. Scheduled around the Kochi Biennale \u2013 Asia\u2019s largest interdisciplinary contemporary arts festival \u2013 as well as a residency with a contemporary theater company or traditional performance institution,  <\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

BK 5: History Senior Seminar in Chicago:<\/span> HY410, Prof. Jake Smith<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

This course travels to Chicago\u2019s Newberry Library so that senior history majors may gather materials for their final research projects in a world-class library.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

BK 5: Greek For Beginners (Athens):<\/span> CL101, Prof. Sanjaya Thakur<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Introduction to reading Attic Greek, the language of ancient Athens in its political, literary, and philosophical prime. We will also learn about the history of the Greek language and its considerable influence on English\u2019s scientific vocabulary and literature.  <\/span><\/p>\n

BK 5: Martyrs & Saints (Italy): <\/span>RE200, Prof. Pamela Reaves<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Encounter the history of Christian martyrdom and sainthood in Rome, Italy. Examines the beginnings of martyrdom in the early church, particularly in the context of the Roman Empire, and the legacies of the apostles Peter and Paul as well as the emergence of later saints, especially in the Catholic tradition.  <\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

BK 5: Musical Crossroads (Panam\u00e1): <\/span>MU228, Prof. Liliana Carrizo<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

An immersive musical and culture-based learning experience, the course is a hands-on exploration of the rich sonic and culinary tapestries that make up Panama’s musics and foodways, where the sounds and cuisines of Panama\u2019s Indigenous populations and African immigrants combined with the music of its Andalusian settlers to create a unique set of soundscapes and culinary cultures.  <\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

BK 7: Voice & the Non-Human (Ecuador): <\/span>EV261\/PH203\/IT320, Prof. Amanda MInervini<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

This course interrogates anthropocentrism and human\/nonhuman animal relations through a specialized, ecocritical and ecofeminist analysis of theoretical, visual and literary texts.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

BK 7: Linking Literacy, Language, and Linguistics (UK): <\/span>ED110, Prof. Lynne Fitzhugh<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

This course is an introduction to the science of comprehensive literacy instruction and linguistics.. designed to enhance teaching abilities, especially for those working with struggling beginning readers and writers who require targeted or intensive intervention, as well as English Language Learners. It will travel in both England and Scotland. <\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

BK 7: Politics, Film & Culture in New York City:<\/span> FM200, Prof. Scott Krzych<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

The city, in all its myriad forms, is the classroom as this course intersects topics of film, culture, and the politics of the largest city in the nation.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

BK 7: Art of Insurgency in Serbia & Bosnia: <\/span>TH239\/PS239, Prof. Shawn Womack<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Investigates the arts\u2019 relation to narratives of power–those stories that justify why certain structures dominate, and why alternatives do not. An examination into those arts that expose these narratives, reveal silenced alternatives, and present challenger stories that aspire to power themselves.  <\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

BK8: Kinesiology-Nordic Research: <\/span>HK260, Prof. Anthony Bull<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

The course is a combination of lectures and student presentations on campus in week 1, and presentations by Nordic researchers and tours of historically famous research institutes in Denmark, Sweden and Finland in weeks 2-4.  <\/span><\/p>\n

BK 8: Turkish German Cinema (Berlin\/Istanbul):<\/span> GR220\/GR320\/FM205,<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Prof. Ane Steckenbiller & Prof. Baran Germen<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Visit both Berlin and Istanbul as the course examines the intersection of arts, culture, and politics for the Turkish population in Germany as well as Turkiye itself. <\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

BK 8: Gusto: Italian Food as Art, Culture, and Tradition:<\/span> IT320, Prof. Amanda Minervini<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

This course includes readings on the cultural history Italian cuisine, and a hands-on part, in Abruzzo: in the kitchen with professional chefs, in a winery, and in a cheese-making facility. During our itinerant class, we will discuss, analyze and unravel a complex tapestry of taste and the history behind them.  <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Applications for next year’s blocks open on the date of our Study Away Fair on February 1 and run through March 16. We recommend applying as early in the window as you can, as many faculty use rolling admissions to fill their rosters. <\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

You do not need to apply for aid separately.  All students who are approved for program rosters are automatically reviewed for a possible aid award. You will be notified of your aid status well before any program has its withdrawal deadline.  <\/span><\/p>\n

SUMMER BLOCKS AWAY <\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Applications are open until January 22.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

While it may be possible to apply after the 22nd, both roster spots and aid may be gone after that deadline.  We always recommend applying as early in the application window as possible. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

How do I apply for a Summer Block Away?<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

It is pretty simple, really. j<\/span>ust visit the Summit page dedicated to Global Education and you will see all the offerings available. Complete the application for the program (or programs) you prefer, and you are also automatically applying for aid as well. <\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Applications remain open until January 22, so you have all of Winter Break to consider your options if you wish.   <\/span>Once applications are closed on January 22, all rosters will be reviewed and aid will be awarded by February 9th.  Apps will then re-open for late applications. <\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

We do recommend applying early if you can, as some programs use rolling admissions and may close before January 22.  <\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Aid is avaialble to students approved to join a program who normally receive need-based aid to attend CC. An aid award can range from 20% of the anticipated cost of the program (program fee + estimated airfare) up to 90% coverage.   <\/span><\/p>\n

What is a Wild Card and how does it apply to Summer Study Away?<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

A Wild Card is basically an automatic “grant” that ensures that CC students do not pay tuition for the first summer course they take at CC.  It applies to on-campus and off-campus summer courses offered by CC, and it is automatically applied to remove the tuition charge the first time you enroll in a summer course. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

It cannot be used for academic year courses or courses offered outside of CC, but it does apply to all CC Summer Blocks Away.  It removes the tuition fee, but not the program fee (travel expenses).  That is what the Summer Block Aid is designed to do. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

What if None of the Summer Blocks Away Work for Me?<\/span><\/strong><\/span> <\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

If there is not a summer block which meets your educational goals, you can petition (also on Summit) for an independent summer study away program offered by any accredited provider or partner.  Several of CC’s semester away partners also offer summer courses.  However, no CC aid can be used for a non-CC summer course, so the full cost of any non-CC summer program abroad would be yours to cover.  It is an optoin, but we always recommend looking at the CC Blocks Away first.  Even if there is not one that speaks to your major, there is almost certainly a course that will help you with graduation requirements or interest you as an elective. <\/span><\/span><\/span> <\/p>\n

Hopefully you, but also representatives from all the 2024-2025 Faculty Led Blocks, Half-Semester, and Semester programs, and, we also expect up to 30 of our partner providers, representing nearly 150 programs all over the globe.  <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

WHY SHOULD I GO TO THE FAIR? <\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

It is the one time all year when you can shop a wide range of study away options from 12 days up to a full year.  You can speak with the faculty who are taking their courses off campus, explore language programs, or explore options for a semester or even a full year away. <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

It is a full length buffet of options and opportunities. <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

All we are missing is coconut shrimp and a chocolate fountain. <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

SEMESTER SPOTLIGHT<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Through our partners around the world, CC is able to offer nearly 150 different semester away options.  This month we highlight three of the options you can choose from.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

1. IHP from SIT: Climate Change: The Politics of Land, Water and Energy Justice<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

A single program that takes you to Morocco, Nepal, Peru and the USA to explore issues of climate justice. Comparative and penetrating, this is focused, topic-based program. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

2. IFSA: Study at the University of Sydney<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

An open-topic semester at one of Australia’s finest universities, allowing you to study<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

what you want, in a wide range of disciplines from the sciences to the arts.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

3. Conflict, Peace & Transition in Northern Ireland (Augsburg U.)<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

A full semester in Derry, complete with internship experience as well as focused study<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

of political, religious, and cultural conflict. You will live, study, and work in a community<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

that has grappled with ongoing divisions and conflict, but is emerging and healing. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

These are just three of nearly 150 options for a semester away. <\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

And all approved CC partner semesters are designed to cost you no more than you would pay to be in Colorado, with aid that travels with you. <\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

 WHAT NEXT?<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Just a quick reminder that if you have been approved by the faculty leader for a block away for Fall 2023 or Spring 2024, you should return to Summit to complete the post-acceptance forms and confirm your intention to join the course.  This will give the faculty the ability to provide you with the registration code needed so you can enroll in Banner and locks in your seat.  <\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

CHECK YOUR PASSPORT<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

A reminder to check your passport and make sure that it is valid at least 6 months past the end of your study away program.  Many countries require this 6-month buffer and may not let you board the plane if your passport expires too soon after the program and your return flight date. <\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

ORIENTATION MEETINGS<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

All blocks away have predeparture orientation meetings, typically 1-2 blocks before departure.  If you are not sure if you know when the meeting will be scheduled, please speak with your course’s faculty leader.  You do not want to miss vital information about the course, the travel plan, course expectations, and travel recommendations. <\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

WAITLISTED FOR A PROGRAM?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

This is not uncommon.  Students dropping from programs is also very common, and since being on the waitlist commits you to nothing, there is no harm in staying on the waitlist for a program.  Of course, look into other summer plans, but it is possible for faculty to call students up from the waitlist up until the first day of the block before the program’s block, for example, the first day of Block 5 for a Block 6 program.  If you are invited to join a program, we will review your application for aid eligibility at that time and will notify you before you are asked to commit to the program.  Sometimes a bit of patience can really pay off.<\/span> <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n\n\n\n
