BK 2: Greek Archaeology:<\/span> Prof. Sanjaya Thakur & Prof. Henry Fricke<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

The course examines the geologic history of the eastern Mediterranean basin and examines the impact of geologic and other environmental changes and events on cultures in ancient Greece and in the modern period through several case studies.<\/span><\/p>\n

BK 2: Mathematical Symmetry in Spain: <\/span>MA340, Prof. Molly Moran<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

The study of symmetry from a mathematical perspective. Symmetry groups of bounded figures, frieze patterns and wallpaper patterns in the Euclidean plane will be classified using the Mosaics, tiling, art, and architecture in Southern Spain as motivation.<\/span><\/p>\n

BK 3: Gazing in Italy: <\/span>PY130, Prof. Tomi-Ann Roberts<\/strong><\/p>\n

In both a classroom and in the \u201claboratory\u201d of the museums, chapels, galleries, gardens and squares of Florence and Siena Italy, this course will examine <\/span>how we \u201csee,\u201d \u201clook,\u201d \u201cgaze,\u201d \u201cbehold\u201d works of art, <\/span> theories and research on facial and bodily expression and embodiment, n<\/span>otions of individualism and identity. <\/span>the role of empathy in aesthetic experience, and g<\/span>ender and sexuality, objectification, “the male gaze”, and power.<\/span><\/p>\n

BK 4: In the Footsteps of Bach (Germany): <\/span>MU398, Prof. Ofer Ben-Amots<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

With study at Leuphana University in L\u00fcneburg, in Eisenach, Weimar, Arnstadt, K\u00f6then and Leipzig  we will focus on and analyze related compositions, while exploring both the historical and social aspects of Bach’s time as we attend many concerts of Bach\u2019s music.<\/span><\/p>\n

BK 4: Performance Away-India: <\/span>DA\/TH232, Prof. Pallavi Sriram<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

This course introduces students to dynamic contemporary arts scenes in India. Scheduled around the Kochi Biennale \u2013 Asia\u2019s largest interdisciplinary contemporary arts festival \u2013 as well as a residency with a contemporary theater company or traditional performance institution.<\/span><\/p>\n

Colorado College will send a small delegation to the annual United Nations global climate conference Engaging COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan within a special schedule block. Qualified students may submit applications to join a team of COP ethnographers, working through the broader Youth Environmental Alliance in Higher Education* the global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).  <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

BK 5: History Senior Seminar in Chicago:<\/span> HY410, Prof. Jake Smith<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

This course travels to Chicago\u2019s Newberry Library so that senior history majors may gather materials for their final research projects in a world-class library.<\/span><\/p>\n

BK 5: Greek For Beginners (Athens): <\/span>CL101, Prof. Sanjaya Thakur<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Introduction to reading Attic Greek, the language of ancient Athens in its political, literary, and philosophical prime. We will also learn about the history of the Greek language and its considerable influence on English\u2019s scientific vocabulary and literature.   <\/span><\/p>\n

BK 5: Martyrs & Saints (Italy):<\/span> RE200, Prof. Pamela Reaves<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Encounter the history of Christian martyrdom and sainthood in Rome, Italy. Examines the beginnings of martyrdom in the early church, particularly in the context of the Roman Empire, and the legacies of the apostles Peter and Paul as well as the emergence of later saints, especially in the Catholic tradition.  <\/span><\/p>\n

BK 5: Musical Crossroads (Panam\u00e1):<\/span> MU228, Prof. Liliana Carrizo<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

An immersive musical and culture-based learning experience, the course is a hands-on exploration of the rich sonic and culinary tapestries that make up Panama’s music and foodways, where the sounds and cuisines of Panama\u2019s Indigenous populations and African immigrants combined with the music of its Andalusian settlers to create a unique set of soundscapes and culinary cultures.  <\/span><\/p>\n

BK 7: Voice & the Non-Human (Galapagos): <\/span>EV261\/PH203\/IT320, Prof. Amanda MInervini<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

This course interrogates anthropocentrism and human\/nonhuman animal relations through a specialized, ecocritical and ecofeminist analysis of theoretical, visual and literary texts.<\/span><\/p>\n

BK 7: Linking Literacy, Language, and Linguistics (UK):<\/span> ED110, Prof. Lynne Fitzhugh<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

This course is an introduction to the science of comprehensive literacy instruction and linguistics.. designed to enhance teaching abilities, especially for those working with struggling beginning readers and writers who require targeted or intensive intervention, as well as English Language Learners. It will travel in both England and Scotland. <\/span><\/p>\n

BK 7: Politics, Film & Culture in New York City:<\/span> FM200, Prof. Scott Krzych<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

The city, in all its myriad forms, is the classroom as this course intersects topics of film, culture, and the politics of the largest city in the nation.<\/span><\/p>\n

BK 7: Art of Insurgency in Serbia & Bosnia: <\/span>TH239\/PS239, Prof. Shawn Womack<\/span> <\/strong><\/p>\n

Investigates the arts\u2019 relation to narratives of power–those stories that justify why certain structures dominate, and why alternatives do not. An examination into those arts that expose these narratives, reveal silenced alternatives, and present challenger stories that aspire to power themselves.  <\/span><\/p>\n

BK8: Kinesiology-Nordic Research:<\/span> HK260, Prof. Anthony Bull<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

The course is a combination of lectures and student presentations on campus in week 1, and presentations by Nordic researchers and tours of historically famous research institutes in Denmark, Sweden and Finland in weeks 2-4.  <\/span><\/p>\n

BK 8: Turkish German Cinema (Berlin\/Istanbul):<\/span> GR220\/GR320\/FM205,<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Prof. Ane Steckenbiller & Prof. Baran Germen<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Visit both Berlin and Istanbul as the course examines the intersection of arts, culture, and politics for the Turkish population in Germany as well as Turkiye itself. <\/span><\/p>\n

BK 8: Gusto: Italian Food as Art, Culture, and Tradition: <\/span>IT320, Prof. Amanda Minervini<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

This course includes readings on the cultural history Italian cuisine, and a hands-on part, in Abruzzo: in the kitchen with professional chefs, in a winery, and in a cheese-making facility. During our itinerant class, we will discuss, analyze and unravel a complex tapestry of taste and the history behind them.  <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Applications for next year’s blocks are open on Summit and run through March 16.  Any questions at all about the application process, or if you would like more information to be able to advise students, there is always a lot of course and process info available on our Global Education Website<\/a>.  Students do not need to apply for aid separately.  All students who are approved for program rosters are automatically reviewed for a possible aid award.  Aid for applications post-March 16 may be unavailable, so on-time application is highly recommended. <\/span><\/p>\n

Please complete the required CANVAS course <\/strong><\/span><\/span>“Taking Academic Courses Off-Campus” first. <\/strong><\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

The Center for Field Study and Global Education has spent a part of the summer revising, updating, and improving the Canvas course for faculty and staff called “Taking Academic Courses Off-Campus”.  It includes guidance and college policy on everything from transportation to per diem, staffing to emergency management plans.  It is essentially our handbook for all Off-Campus travel with students, and it is required for all faculty who plan to take students off our campus as part of an academic course. . <\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

If you are planning to take students off campus for anything from a day trip to a full semester away, you are required to complete the essential modules for each travel type (Domestic Field Trip, International Travel, Blocks or Semesters Away) prior to departure.  Completing the course once allows you to travel with students throughout the upcoming year.  There is also a set of modules for your Second Responsible Adult to complete to ensure that they are familiar with expectations and requirements for their role with your traveling group..  The course is divided into several short modules so that you can review the material at your own pace, and does include several check-in quizzes so <\/span>that your completion of the course can be verified.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS AND “CPT”<\/span><\/h1>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n\n\n\n

Just what is “CPT”? <\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

CPT or Curricular Practical Training is a program which international students on an F-1 visa (the majority of CC\u2019s international population) can apply for during their 4 years at the college.  It allows them to work, intern, or engage in volunteering opportunities outside of the college as part of their educational experience, particulary as a practical component within their major field of study.  This is something not permitted by their student status without CPT authorization.  In most cases at CC, students use CPT for summer internships, but there are others that may occur during the school year on a part-time basis, including volunteer work. <\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

What should I know about CPT?<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Here are five things international students, and faculty who advise them, should know about CPT:<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

1) CPT is used to authorize off-campus work, paid or unpaid internship, even many volunteering opportunities.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

2)  Engaging in these activities without approved CPT authorization can endanger a student\u2019s immigration status and ability to stay at CC. So, when in doubt, have students speak with ISSS well before they start any of these activities.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

3) Students must have a declared major to qualify, which usually means sophomore year or later.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

4) Key faculty roles include helping a student find opportunities that can be tied to their major and then making the case within the application process that the experience is tied closely to the work of the major.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

5)  A CPT authorized experience can be of varying lengths, but if a student engages in 12 months of CPT it could impact their ability to stay and work in the USA after graduation (Through a status extension called OPT.)<\/span><\/p>\n

What is my role in helping a student qualify for CPT?<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

The primary request made of faculty, often a department chair or faculty advisor, is to write a letter of support which outlines how the proposed experience aligns with, contributes to, and is \u201cintegral\u201d to the student\u2019s education with in their major. That word \u201cintegral\u201d is essential, because the goal of all CPT experiences is to provide practical training within a major field of study.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

What can faculty do to maximize a student\u2019s chances of approval for CPT?<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

The key contribution of the faculty member is to help the student make the case that the proposed experience is part of their academic and pre-professional program, that it is \u201cintegral\u201d (there it is again) to their educational path and their field of study.  In some fields and with some experiences this is much easier to define, but all majors are capable of making strong cases for students if the proposed experience is truly an outgrowth of their academic program and not simply a summer job or internship disconnected from their studies.  That is the key, and that is how you can help our international students not only receive authorization but also have meaningful experiences in work, internships, and volunteering tied to their academic goals and studies. <\/p>\n
