We are looking forward to another year of providing resources, support, advice, and advocacy for our international students and for you to take your classes everywhere from the next county to the other side of the globe.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\n

We are also excited to announce that this will be the last Global Ed newsletter.\u00a0 We are joining our friends and colleagues in Sustainability, the CCE, and the Career Center to form a coalition of offices dedicated to experiential education.\u00a0 Our offices will still be here for you, but now we will also work in partnership to promote and advocate for the wide range of research, internship, community-based learning, and off-campus programming that makes a CC education one of the nation’s finest.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\n

We have a new webpage to kick this off<\/a>, with a lot more to come.<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

We are working on branding and building out easier pathways for<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

students to find out about the wide range of opportunities that CC offers.<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\n

And we will be putting out a joint newsletter<\/span> to promote all the amazing experiential learning that happens in our curriculum and co-curriculum throughout the year.\u00a0 So, expect updates on both field study and study away to be found there starting this first block.<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

ARE YOU PLANNING TO OFFER A SUMMER 2025 BLOCK AWAY COURSE<\/span>? <\/strong><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\n

SUMMIT proposals for Summer 2025 Off-Campus Blocks<\/span> are due by Friday, October 4, the Summit proposal form<\/a> is open now, and we are here to help you with everything from logistics to budgeting as you plan your course proposal. <\/strong><\/span>Please bring any questions to Kellee or Allen in Global Ed as you plan out the <\/strong><\/span>what, where, when, why, and how of your course.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

HOW ABOUT A COURSE FOR NEXT YEAR?\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

We know it sounds very early, but to enroll students this spring, we need to have proposals in during the fall, it’s just the nature of study away. <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

If you hope to offer an off-campus Block in the 2025-2026 Academic Year<\/span>,<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

you have until Friday, October 25, to upload the proposal on SUMMIT.<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Set up an appointment with Allen or Kellee to walk through the proposal\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

process, to help with budget, discussion of potential partner-providers,<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

or just to discuss an idea you are hoping to turn into a reality.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

(AY BLOCKS do not need a full proposal, syllabus, budget, etc. by October,<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

but the course basics are expected.)<\/em>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

“Taking Academic Courses Off-Campus” first.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The Center for Field Study and Global Education has a Canvas course for faculty and staff called “Taking Academic Courses Off-Campus”.\u00a0 It includes guidance and college policy on everything from transportation to per diem, staffing to emergency management plans.\u00a0 It is essentially our handbook for all Off-Campus travel with students, and it is required for all faculty who plan to take students off our campus as part of an academic course.<\/span><\/p>\n

If you are planning to take students off campus for anything from a day trip to a full semester away, you are required to complete the essential modules for each travel type (Domestic Field Trip, International Travel, Blocks or Semesters Away) prior to departure.\u00a0 Completing the course once allows you to travel with students throughout the upcoming year.\u00a0 There is also a set of modules for your Second Responsible Adult to complete to ensure that they are familiar with expectations and requirements for their role with your traveling group..\u00a0 The course is divided into several short modules so that you can review the material at your own pace, and does include several check-in quizzes so <\/span>that your completion of the course can be verified.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Build a Block Away is a hands-on workshop to help you move from concept to proposal, complete with information on best practices, budgeting, itinerary building, partnerships, and staffing for a block away.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

We will be offering this workshop twice this Fall, once before the Summer 2025 and AY25-26 proposal deadlines, and one later in the fall for folks looking to propose next fall.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

We in ISSS are really excited to welcome a new class of students to campus from around the world.\u00a0 We expect you are looking forward to have them in your courses, advising groups, and just around campus, just as we are happy to have them here studying at CC.<\/span><\/p>\n

As we gear up for a new academic year, just a quick reminder:<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

If you have an international student who you are advising to drop a course, take a leave of absence, or just request a block off<\/span><\/strong><\/span>, <\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

please remind them that it is in their best interest to always <\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

check with the ISSS team first.\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\n

There are times when even a single block off or a dropped course can have significant impact to a student’s immigration status and the benefits of being an F-1 or J-1 student.\u00a0 Speaking with the ISSS team before dropping a course gives students the chance to ensure that there are no unintended consequences to the drop.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

We are here to help students avoid those unwanted impacts to their<\/span><\/p>\n

academic choices. We can provide timely information that allows<\/span><\/p>\n

them to make decisions and have peace of mind about their choices.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

So, please, send students our way when they are having difficulties,<\/span><\/p>\n

or if they express an interest in dropping a course, taking a leave, <\/span><\/p>\n

or requesting a block off.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
