The History Department invites you to this year\u2019s Pettit Lecture<\/a>, \u201cBodily Natures, Natural Bodies: Settler Colonialism, Indigenous Motherhood, and the Dispossessive Politics of Reproduction,\u201d to be delivered by Dr. Traci Brynne Voyles, on Tuesday, September 3 at 4:30 p.m. in the Tim Fuller Event Space in Tutt Library<\/strong>. Light refreshments will be provided.<\/p>\n

This talk examines late nineteenth century ideas about the naturalness \u2013 or not \u2013 of childbirth. In 1889, a doctor named A.F. King weighed in on a debate among his colleagues about whether or not childbirth was natural: \u201cIf we would understand natural parturition, pure and simple, we must study primitive woman \u2013 woman of the forest and the field.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Pettit Lecture series was established by family and friends in honor of Arthur G. Pettit, a distinguished scholar, teacher, and historian who was an associate professor of History at CC until his death in 1977.<\/p>\n

Join us Friday, Sept. 6 at 7 p.m. in Celeste Theatre<\/strong> for an evening with author Rebecca F. Kuang<\/a> as she discusses her novel Yellowface<\/em><\/a> \u2013 the audacious novel that\u2019s entertained and challenged readers worldwide.<\/p>\n

A blistering satire of publishing, Yellowface<\/em> grapples with questions of diversity, racism, and cultural appropriation, as well as the alienation of social media. A Marshall Scholar with degrees from Cambridge and Oxford, Kuang is also the author of The Poppy War<\/em> trilogy and Babel<\/em>. She is currently completing a PhD in East Asian Languages and Literatures at Yale.<\/p>\n

We wanted to inform you of some changes to our free, 24\/7 Mental Health Support offered to students. We have a new provider, Uwill, which should improve the services for our community. In order to use the 24\/7 service, students must complete a one-time registration by\u00a0visiting this page<\/a>.\u00a0<\/em>If you are facing a mental health emergency, call 1-833-646-1526 to reach one of Uwill\u2019s licensed therapists trained in crisis response. Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry Neena Grover is being recognized by the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology for being a leader in her field. Grover has received the organization\u2019s William C. Rose Award for Exemplary Contributions to Education through teaching and supporting emerging scientists.<\/p>\n

Grover’s lab\u00a0at CC studies the role of sequence on small RNA motif stability. She and her students are particularly interested in the interactions between RNA and metal ions. Grover is a founding member of the\u00a0ASBMB Undergraduate Student Chapters program\u00a0and serves as the adviser for the K-12 science outreach program at CC.<\/p>\n
