The Freedom of Expression Policy Group is grateful for all those who joined us for the community dialogues to discuss CC\u2019s Freedom of Expression policy. The information you shared with us during these sessions will help the group shape our work on the policy over the summer.<\/p>\n

During these sessions, many in our community revealed a collective concern regarding the clarity, equity, and effectiveness of CC\u2019s existing policy. In particular, the following themes were prominent in the feedback we received:<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n\n\n\n

  1. Awareness and Communication:<\/strong> Many community members, particularly students, were unaware of the policy, highlighting a need for improved communication and visibility.<\/li>\n
  2. Desire for Clarity:<\/strong> Across all groups, there was a strong call for clearer guidelines outlining what expressive activities are permissible and prohibited.<\/li>\n
  3. Intersection of Roles and Freedoms:<\/strong> Many of our staff and faculty raised questions about the relationship between academic freedom and freedom of speech, particularly in classroom settings.<\/li>\n
  4. Philosophy of Support:<\/strong> Across groups, people expressed a desire for a philosophical framework that encourages expression rather than deterring it.<\/li>\n
  5. Addressing Ambiguities:<\/strong> Many participants raised concerns about terms and phrases needing further clarification.<\/li>\n<\/ol><\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n\n\n\n

    We understand that this is a busy time for all and that many of you were unable to make it to our listening sessions.  If you have additional feedback that you would like to provide in advance of our summer convening, please complete this anonymous survey<\/a> by Saturday, May 31.<\/strong><\/p>\n

    Our group will be working this summer to incorporate the feedback we received in order to bring a new policy draft to students, staff, and faculty during Fall 2025. A number of people expressed interest in reviewing, and providing feedback on, a draft prior to the standard 30-day comment period, and we have structured our process to reflect that input. During the fall, we will host another series of Community Dialogues prior to the 30-day open comment period.<\/p>\n
