The Colorado College Journalism Institute launched the Reporting on Wildfires<\/em> class in Fall 2023 after a science professor won a 2021 National Science Foundation grant that included the Journalism Institute as a partner. Since then, 30 CC students have received state-of-the-art wildfire journalism instruction.<\/p>\n

CC professor Dr. Rebecca Barnes and her colleagues and collaborators from Colorado State University and the University of California, Riverside, were awarded $844,435 for their project, \u201cRole of Soil Microbiome Resilience in Ecosystem Recovery Following Severe Wildfire.\u201d The Journalism Institute\u2019s role in the grant was to help translate scientific research about wildfires to the public in an accessible way. Additionally, the Journalism Institute hoped they could help scientists become better communicators by giving them an outlet to report on their findings. <\/p>\n

CC was awarded Silver in the Family & Health | College for Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree<\/em><\/a> category, an affirmation of our rigorous academics, supportive campus culture, and commitment to preparing students for meaningful lives and careers. Meanwhile, the FAC earned Bronze for Best Museum<\/em><\/a> and Bemis School of Art took home Silver in the Art Class<\/em> category<\/a>, highlighting the strength of our arts community. <\/p>\n

We\u2019re proud to see the campus recognized not only for academic excellence but also for enriching the cultural landscape of the Pikes Peak region. At the beginning of her sophomore year, Evie Biggs \u201925 knew two things: she was going to pursue medicine or law, and she wanted to graduate in three years.<\/p>\n

\u201cI wanted a challenging career that was constantly evolving and required a lot of me ethically, socially, and intellectually,\u201d says Biggs, a Molecular Biology major who was leaning towards a career in medicine but couldn\u2019t shake the feeling that it wasn\u2019t totally what she wanted. \u201cHowever, as I researched possible healthcare careers, no path stood out to me as a good match for my short- and long-term goals, and in the back of my mind, I couldn\u2019t shake free from the idea of a legal career.\u201d<\/p>\n

A lover of languages, arts, and sciences, Sophie Ramirez \u201917 was drawn to CC from the beginning. \u201cI was looking for a new challenge. I was looking for something completely out of left field. And that was exactly what CC offered.\u201d Then, she encountered all the opportunities and resources, such as the Writing Center, the Career Center, and the Center for Global Education & Field Study. As a first-generation student, Ramirez says, \u201cHaving these connections to knowledgeable people\u2026 was a make it or break it for me.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cI hadn\u2019t had the opportunity to travel as much as my peers before college,\u201d she says. \u201cAny opportunity or scholarship that I found available for me to travel abroad\u2026 I took.\u201d Ramirez went to South Africa for an internship, took a block on Shakespeare in London, received a Venture Grant and traveled around Germany for three weeks, and was in Spain and Israel for a one and a half block course. \u201cOn top of that,\u201d she says, \u201cI got a REU [Research Experience for Undergrads] and studied for a whole summer in France, and then did a study abroad in France with CC.\u201d <\/p>\n

After a five-week intensive professional theatre training, the FAC’s Youth Repertory Ensemble<\/a> will culminate by performing Hadestown Teen Edition<\/em> on the mainstage July 24-27!<\/p>\n

This intriguing and beautiful folk opera follows two intertwining love stories \u2013 that of young dreamers Orpheus and Eurydice, and that of immortal King Hades and Queen Persephone.
