Safos Dance Theatre performed Stories from Home <\/em>on campus last month, which included a series of contemporary dances embodying the oral traditions of Nuevomexicano, Chicano, and Mexican American communities in the Southwest.<\/p>\n

\u201cOne of the most touching parts of the performance for me was the contrast between sharpness and fluidness, between hard, rigid movements and soft, powerful voices,\u201d says Shanti Harrison \u201928, who attended the production with her mom during Family Weekend. <\/em>\u201cWhen one of the dancers was battling himself, holding a piece of paper\u2014of language\u2014in his mouth without swallowing it, that made me tear up.\u201d<\/p>\n

Nine dancers from Safos Dance Theatre, a non-profit dance company in Arizona, performed in the production, which was hosted by the Southwest Studies Department on Sep. 27.<\/p>\n

Don\u2019t miss the Libation Lecture, Practically Perfect in Every Medium: Mary Poppins<\/em> from Page to Screen to Stage<\/a>, tonight,<\/strong> Friday, Oct. 17, 5:30 p.m.<\/strong> at the FAC with Marc Napolitano, Assistant Professor of English, United States Air Force Academy.<\/p>\n

P.L. Travers\u2019 Mary Poppins<\/em> books are representative of the golden age of British children\u2019s literature initiated by Lewis Carroll\u2019s Alice in Wonderland<\/em>. However, it took a uniquely American company with a uniquely American entrepreneur to transform the Mary Poppins<\/em> books into one of the most beloved and acclaimed movie musicals of all time.<\/p>\n

Grab the themed cocktail, Spoonful of Sugar, and settle in for this talk, which will contextualize the Mary Poppins<\/em> books while exploring the process of adaptation: how did the Walt Disney Company seek to contemporize, Americanize, and \u201cDisneyfy\u201d the original texts while endeavoring to preserve the aspects of the texts that made them such a beloved property in the first place? And how did the stage version reconnect the Disney adaptation to its literary roots?
