Each year on the third Monday of January, we pause to reflect on the activism and teachings of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and recommit ourselves to justice, service, equity, and inclusion. Here in Colorado Springs, the Rev Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Legacy Preservation Society<\/a> honors his enduring legacy through events that bring together activists, public servants, students, educators, cultural workers, and community members from across our city.  <\/p>\n

This year MLK Day coincides with the first day of Block 5. We invite you to honor Dr. King\u2019s legacy by joining one of the Society\u2019s events, featuring keynote speaker Yolanda Renee King, the sole granddaughter of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and Coretta Scott King. At 17 years old, Yolanda continues her family\u2019s tradition of leadership, activism, and advocacy for justice. <\/p>\n

On Sunday, Jan. 18<\/strong>, from<\/strong> 3-5 p.m.<\/strong>, CC will host a Fireside Chat with Yolanda Renee King<\/a>, featuring local middle school, high school, and college students. This event will take place at Richard F. Celeste Theatre.<\/strong> On Monday, Jan. 19<\/strong>, the annual All People\u2019s Breakfast<\/a>\u2014Mission Possible II: Building Community, Uniting a Nation the Nonviolent Way\u2014will take place at The Antlers Hotel at<\/strong> 8 a.m., <\/strong>followed by The Unity Freedom March<\/a> from the Antlers Hotel to Acacia Park.    <\/p>\n

If you would like to join Institutional Equity and Belonging at the All People\u2019s Breakfast, please register in advance<\/a>. We will provide round-trip transportation. Reserve your seat in the van by registering here<\/a>. The Zeb shuttle is an alternative transportation option offering free convenient service between campus and The Antlers.  <\/p>\n

We encourage you to engage in community building, service, and justice\u2014not only on MLK Day but throughout the year. Explore additional opportunities through the CCE<\/a>,\u202fUnited Way<\/a>, or other local organizations to put social justice into action. <\/p>\n
