As Spring Break approaches, we want to share a brief reminder about how to support students who may disclose experiences of sexual misconduct, relationship violence, stalking, or harassment. Break periods can sometimes increase risk, and disclosures often occur shortly after students return\u2014frequently to a trusted faculty or staff member first.<\/p>\n

If a student discloses to you:<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n\n\n\n

1. Pause and respond with nonjudgmental care.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Thank them for telling you. Avoid pressing for details. A simple response such as, \u201cI\u2019m really glad you told me. I\u2019m sorry this happened.”<\/em> can make a significant difference in providing effective help.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n\n\n\n

2. Be transparent about your reporting obligations.<\/strong><\/p>\n

As a CC employee, you are a mandatory reporter under Title IX, and must share information with the Office for Civil Rights & Title IX. Let the student know this clearly and early. For example:
\u201cI want to make sure you know I\u2019m required to share this information with our Title IX office, who will reach out to offer support. You are not required to respond to them.\u201d<\/em> <\/p>\n

Avoid promising confidentiality unless you are a designated confidential resource.<\/p>\n

If you encounter a disclosure, make sure to <\/strong> file a report with the Title IX Office.<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n\n\n\n
