Mark Fiore ’91 began his career by drawing political cartoons for newspapers, and in the late 1990s he experimented with animating his cartoons.
The inventor of the animated political cartoon has since earned numerous awards for his work. Most recently, he was awarded the 2016 Herblock Prize for exemplifying the courageous independent standard set by pioneering political cartoonist Herb Block, whom Fiore once visited.
Fiore was awarded an honorary Doctor of Philosophy by Colorado College in 2011, the same year he delivered the commencement address. He also is featured in CC’s Faces of Innovation.
Among his achievements are the Pulitzer Prize for political cartooning in 2010, the Robert F. Kennedy Award for Excellence in Journalism in the cartoon category in 2005, and numerous online and new media awards.
