On August 8th, the lizards, wizards, yuppies and born-too-late wannabe deadheads crawled out to Ford Amphitheater to see the King Gizzard perform yet again in Colorado. They have played multiple years at Red Rocks, usually in a two or three show run, which only further grew their swarm of dedicated followers. The group is known for being prolific with their album releases and their tours. Each year they seem to continue to branch out and find more creative ways to perform, and this year they played with the full Colorado Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Sarah Hicks. While Ford Amphitheater isn’t exactly as picturesque as Red Rocks (the view of i25 and the Air Force is a distinctly Colorado Springs touch), the ability for them to play with the orchestra was well worth it. The effect was a full bodied sound with strings in the background, a rich, layered, and psychedelic reimagining.
