Storage in GIS

Posted by on January 23, 2013

I started working in the GIS lab during half block. GIS is an interesting place to start out at, because typically the students in the labs know much more about the software and systems than you do, which hopefully isn’t the case in the other labs.

The other exciting thing about GIS is the shiny hardware you get to play with. My first day of halfblock involved learning the process of installing a twelve terabyte server. The pure amount of data moved around by Matt is staggering. Today we added it up: 30.74 terabytes of GIS data, student and faculty projects and backups. This of course is out of the 72 terabytes total running on the server. Impressive!
