While I know I have not covered all the things this app has to offer, or different ways of doing things, this is a good place to start. The next few posts I do will be the Uploading Guidelines for The Flashcards Deluxe App. This is all from an excel document introducing various things about the app. And, hopefully, this document will address anything I have not. If you have any questions, feel free to post a comment and I’ll try and find the answer and respond in a timely fashion. Hope this was of some help for all you flashcard users out there!
Introduction
Original / Basic import format
The yellow section below is what you would copy/paste into the Upload page of the website.
Column 1 is the question, and column 2 is the answer.
Each row is a new card. | ||||||
(side 1) | (side 2) | |||||
book | libro | |||||
shirt | camisa | |||||
speak | hablar | |||||
This “original” import format supports up to 5 columns, as shown below:
(side 1) | (side 2) | (side 3) | (category 1) | (category 2)
book | libro | los libros | chapter 1 | nouns
If you want to include pictures, sounds, or more than 3 sides, please use the “new” import format as described on the next tab.
New Import Format
A new import format is available which allows up to 5 sides and 4 categories.
The new import format is more powerful, but requires you to label each column so that the app knows what each column represents. |
||||||||
Entering Text | ||||||||
Text 1 | Text 2 | “Text 1” = text to show on side 1 (question)
book | libro | “Text 2” = text to show on side 2 (answer)
shirt | camisa | |||||||
speak | hablar | |||||||
The yellow section – including the header row – is what you would copy/paste into the Upload page of the website |
||||||||
Up to 5 sides of text are support, so you can add columns for “Text 3”, “Text 4” and “Text 5”
Adding Categories | ||||||||
Categories are used to filter cards when studying, so you can study just select categories.
Text 1 | Text 2 | Category 1 | ||||||
book | libro | Chapter 1 | ||||||
shirt | camisa | Chapter 1 | ||||||
speak | hablar | Chapter 2 | ||||||
Up to 4 different categories are supported, so you can add columns for “Category 2”, “Category 3” and “Category 4”.
Adding Pictures and Sounds
You enter the file name of the picture and/or sound you want shown on each side of the flashcard.
The header tells the app what side to put each picture or sound on.
Text 1 | Text 2 | Picture 1 | Sound 2
book | libro | slide 1.jpg | libro.mp3
shirt | camisa | slide 2.jpg | camisa.mp3
speak | hablar | slide 3.jpg | hablar.mp3
In this example, in addition to text on side 1 and 2, a picture will be shown on side 1, and a sound clip will be included on side 2. |
||||||||
Note that “Text 1” is not a required column, so if you don’t have text to show on side 1, don’t include this column. |
||||||||
Picture and sound file names can also be complete http:// addresses. In this case, you would not upload these pictures/sounds to our website. |
||||||||
After uploading your flashcard text (with picture/sound file names defined), do the following to upload the actual picture/sound files: |
||||||||
1) To go the “Upload Pictures / Sounds” page (link in top right). You should see the list of pictures and sounds you need to upload. |
||||||||
2) Upload each file one at a time, or zip them up and upload a zip file.
An alternative to uploading picture and sound files to our server is to keep them on your own Dropbox (or similar) web space. For details: |
||||||||
http://orangeorapple.com/flashcards/Default.aspx
Each of the 5 sides can support 1 picture and 1 sound clip. So you can create columns for “Picture 1″…”Picture 5” and “Sound 1″…”Sound 5” |
||||||||
New Lines and Cell Wrapping
Creating New-Lines in Text
If you want to force a new line in your text, use a special command to do this in Excel.
On the PC, use alt-enter in Excel to create a new line in a cell.
On a Mac, try the following: command+enter, option+enter, or command+option+enter.
Notice how the bright yellow cell has new lines in it. This will create new lines in your flashcards in the app.
Text 1 | Text 2 | ||||
book | libro | ||||
shirt | camisa | ||||
speak | hablo hablas habla hablamos |
||||
When doing this, you will see quotes added to your text when pasting into my website. This is normal.
If your text is long, you’ll want to turn on “Wrap text” in Excel so that the text stays within a single cell. (For ease of viewing only.) |
|||||
To turn on “wrap text” for a column: right-click on a letter column header, choose “Format Cells”, go to “Alignment” tab, and check “Wrap text”.) |
