Mark Claypool has been promoted to professor of computer science at Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Worcester, Mass. He joined WPI in 1998 and was promoted to associate professor with tenure in 2004. Since 2005, he has been co-director of the institute’s interactive media and game development degree program. He has earned an international reputation for research on the performance of multimedia networks, and received National Science Foundation awards for his research and work in educational innovation.

Walt Keller ’90 (left) owns and operates the Lumber Baron Inn Bed and Breakfast in Denver with his wife, Julie. During a weekend in mid-January, Walt noticed one of his overnight guests had CC license plates on his car. Those guests were Randy and Melea Madsen Benzel ’92 (center and right in photo).  Randy and Melea own Pure BI, Inc., an IT consulting firm.

Lisa Lane Filholm received her master of arts in curriculum and instruction (secondary English education) from the University of Colorado, Denver, in May 2008. She is an English teacher at J.K. Mullen High School in Denver, where she says she can check out the senior pictures of CC grads Noel Lenski ’88 and Paul Moore ’88 any time she likes. She lives in Denver with her husband, Tal, and sons, Augie, 11, and George, 9.

Lauren McArthur Harris received her Ph.D. in education studies from the University of Michigan in September 2008. She will remain there for a two-year post-doctoral research and teaching position in the School of Education.

Alek Orloff is serving on the Colorado Solid and Hazardous Waste Commission. He was appointed to the commission by Colorado Gov. Bill Ritter in October. The nine-member group is the official rule-making body for solid and hazardous waste regulations in Colorado.

Justin Lippard ’96, Blaine Olsen ’96, Nick Watterson ’96, and Scott Grosscup ’96 (left to right) got together at Sunlight Mountain Resort near Glenwood Springs, Colo., in February to test their physical limits in the 4th Annual 24 Hours of Sunlight endurance ski race. As a four-man team, they climbed a total of 43,558 feet, completing 29 laps and covering a distance of 40.6 miles in 24 hours. They finished 20th out of 50 teams. Of 221 total laps completed in their classification, Scott turned in the seventh fastest time and four of the fastest 20 times.  Nick and Blaine were not far off that pace. Justin remarked, “It remains unclear whether Justin knew the event was actually a race.”

Marc Webb made his feature directorial debut at this year’s Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah, with the film “500 Days of Summer,” starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zooey Deschanel. The film was described in the Sundance guide as a “postmodern love story.” Marc says he has a long history with Sundance, and when he was a senior at Colorado College, he and a friend, Ed Helms, parked cars there. While he was there, he met Doug Pray ’83, whose film “Hype” was being screened that year. Marc began working for Doug. For years, Marc has been directing music videos for groups including My Chemical Romance and All American Rejects, and commercials including a series of promos on the USA Network for the series “Monk.”

Nathan Calhoon is already a dedicated CC hockey fan. The 7-year-old son of John Calhoon ’93 made his own CC Tigers hockey shirt. John lives in Castle Rock, Colo., with his wife, Kate, and his two sons. He coaches soccer, works as a partner in a business-consulting firm, and says he “misses CC intramural hockey games.”  He says he would love to hear from other Tigers. Matt Grubs is a reporter on KDFW, the Fox affiliate in Dallas, Texas. He spent six years based in Santa Fe, where he was the political reporter for KOAT-TV.

Andrew Borene is working with the U.S. Department of Defense. He is a member of an interagency legal team, working as agency counsel representing the DOD in habeas corpus matters originating from war-on-terrorism detainees held at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Andrew is working in an area unprecedented in legal history. He also teaches a class on the U.S. intelligence community in the global policy department at the Humphrey Institute.

Donna J. Drucker received her Ph.D. in history from Indiana University in September 2008.

Selen Ucak is serving as a member of President Dick Celeste’s International Advisory Board. Selen lives in New York, where she is executive director of The American Turkish Society.
