A $14 million renovation of Slocum Hall, one of the largest residence halls on the Colorado College campus, has transformed a 1950s building into a showcase of 21st-century livability. The renovation, completed in time for the incoming Class of 2017, was aimed at promoting a sense of community and increasing the building’s energy efficiency.

A major goal was to create new collaborative and study spaces in the building, originally built in 1953. An enhanced sense of community and collaboration was created by literally tearing down walls and opening up spaces where students can gather. The residence hall now has an open lounge on the first floor, which provides a common, comfortable space for mixed-use activities, including entertainment, cozy living, and group study. Numerous study rooms, high-top tables for group projects, and small, comfortable gathering spots are strategically located throughout the residence hall.

“This is the kind of residence hall we need for students,” said President Jill Tiefenthaler. She notes that the building has “the warmth of home and also classroom space where living and learning are blended together. That really is a part of what we do at CC, and I’m thrilled to see this building reflect our values.”
