John White has been named president of GoZip, LLC, and Experiential Resources, Inc. a global designer, builder, and operator of custom zip line and adventure courses. He will be in charge of overseeing the strategic growth of the company’s networks and new properties and operations.

Matthew Burkley has been named chief executive officer at Genscape, Inc., a DMG information company and leading global provider of energy fundamentals information for commodity and financial markets. Matthew was most recently chief financial officer of the sales and trading division of Thomson Reuters.

Brigid Maher was granted tenure and promoted to associate professor of American University. She is also program director for the Digital Media Skills Graduate Certificate, AU’s first online certification program which she designed.
Sarah Van Deusen Phillips received her Ph.D. in human development from the University of Chicago in March 2008.
Jonathan Steiner ’95
Jonathan Steiner is vice president for finance and administration/CFO at the Music Academy of the West. Jonathan had been serving as controller and director of finance at Johnson Controls. At the Music Academy, he oversees accounting, investments, budgetary administration, human resources, database administration, and information technology. Founded in 1947, the Music Academy is among the nation’s preeminent summer schools and festivals for gifted young classical musicians.

Jack Hayes is assistant editor for book reviews and China- and Central Asia-related manuscripts for the journal Environmental History. He is also a professor of history at Norwich University in Vermont, and is working on a manuscript on ethnic relations, regional economies, and environmental history in western China’s Sichuan Province.

Emily Kendal Frey won the 2010 Cleveland State University First Book Prize for “The Grief Performance.” Judge Rae Armantrout wrote of her work, “Emily Kendal Frey performs grief and dread as a graceful dance, the kind the tree you cut down in your backyard might do on your heart. This work is light, deft, dangerous.” She also is the author of “Airport,” “Frances,” and “The New Planet.” She lives in Portland, Ore.
Adam Kim is a partner and board-certified gastroenterologist at Minnesota Gastroenterology, P.A., in St. Paul, Minn. He was the editor of “Probiotics: A Clinical Guide.”
Andrew Borene ’98
Andrew Borene has been named director of government and industry affairs and assistant general counsel at ReconRobotics, a world leader in tactical micro-robot systems. Andrew will be responsible for building the company’s government relations activities and supporting federally funded research and development programs. He came to ReconRobotics from LexisNexis, where he was a manager supporting large contract programs with U.S. defense and intelligence agencies. Previously, he was associate deputy general counsel at the Pentagon. A former U.S. Marine military intelligence officer who served in Iraq, he began his professional career as an investment banking associate with Wells Fargo and Co.

Kristan Markey and his wife, Elena, are in Paris, where Kristan is serving as a governmental liaison at the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development to foster the safe and environmentally sustainable use of nanomaterials. Kristan reports his colleagues “think something is truly amiss when a vegan is posted to France.”
Cricket S. Myers received a Drama Desk Award and a Tony nomination for her design of “Bengal Tiger at the Baghdad Zoo” this year. She is a Los Angeles-based sound designer. She was previously nominated for three Ovation Awards in 2010, and has been named sound designer of the year multiple times by StageSceneLA. She received her MFA in sound design from California Institute of the Arts in 2003 and was named “Young Designer to Watch” in Live Design magazine’s April 2007 issue.
Emily Tatel received her family nurse practitioner license and is working as a nurse practitioner for an obstetrics-gynecology practice in the San Francisco Bay area.
Adam Woodis received a Ph.D. in German from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and accepted a faculty position at Illinois Wesleyan University.
