Laura Hershey ’83: A Determined Spirit

Laura Hershey ’83 was an acclaimed poet, essayist and artist, a passionate advocate and activist, an enthusiastic world traveler, and a loving friend, partner, and mother. Her 20-page curriculum vitae is stuffed with accomplishments. And she did it all from a wheelchair. At 2, Hershey was diagnosed with a form of muscular dystrophy but packed a lot of living into the 48 years before her death in November 2010. That loss still resonates at CC, particularly among the professors who rejoiced in her quick mind, generous heart, and determined spirit. “She was just exceptionally curious and engaged,” said Dean Susan Ashley, who taught history at the time. “She was the…

Barefoot in the Park: CC Runners Shun Shoes and Help Launch a Movement

When Michael Sandler ’93 first took off his running shoes, he didn’t expect to help start a revolution. In fact, he just wanted to see if it would help him heal from injuries sustained in a serious accident. In spring 2006, Sandler was rollerblading on a Boulder bike path when he suddenly swerved to avoid colliding with a toddler who had wandered onto the path. Avoiding the toddler sent Sandler into a crash that broke his leg and pelvis in multiple places. Doctors told him he’d never run again. But that didn’t stop Sandler, a longtime pro athlete who was used to overcoming pain and obstacles. “I got to the…

Turning the Lens on CC’s Magical Places

Ask 20 people to identify a magical place at CC and most likely you will get 20 different answers. Most will, however, agree that there are magical places on and near the CC campus. It is those places Political Science Professor Tom Cronin and Alex Truax ’11 set out to capture in the “magical places” project, begun during the summer of 2009. “Tom likes to have a photo of each of his classes, so he asked me to take a photo of his class in the Garden of the Gods,” Truax said. The class was there to discuss Thoreau’s “Walden” and to find their own Walden. “I took the photo…

Amazing Young Icers Reach NCAA Quarterfinals

Craving the hockey program’s first NCAA tournament victory in six years, our Tigers let loose with a mighty roar on Friday, March 25. The Eagles from Boston College, defending national champions, never knew what hit them. Colorado College stunned BC with three goals within a span of 3:28 early in the game, added its first of two shorthanded tallies late in the first period, and pulled off a stunning 8-4 upset in opening-round West Regional action in St. Louis, Mo. And, although CC saw its dream of a national championship come to an end 24 hours later with a 2-1 loss to the University of Michigan, this team of 16…

Go West, Young Men

The road after graduation leads west – about 20,000 miles west – for seniors Ezra Siegel, Jack Naito, and Richard Swift. The three have purchased tickets for a June 12 departure to Japan, where, despite the recent events, they will embark on “The Road is West,” a 193-day journey of more than 20,000 miles through 24 countries and three continents. The idea began when Siegel and Naito were sophomores; Siegel wanted to travel extensively and Naito liked cars – so in CC fashion they devised their own interdisciplinary post-graduation plan: driving around the world. Naito mentioned the idea to Swift, and he was immediately in. The trio will purchase a Subaru in Japan,…

Gifted and Talented Program Turns 30

Colorado College’s renowned summer program for gifted and talented children celebrates its 30th anniversary this year. Developed in 1981 when very few such programs existed, the three-week summer session offers a variety of hands-on classes for gifted elementary-school students.  The program was developed to provide gifted children constructive summertime learning and engagement. It was a pioneer at the time and remains one of very few such programs, particularly for children younger than 10, said Director Charlotte Mendoza, chair of the education department at Colorado College.  Such programs are important, Mendoza says, because research shows that the single most advantageous thing one can do for gifted students is to cluster them…

From the President

Dear Alumni, Parents, and Friends of Colorado College: It has been eight and a half years since I wrote my first “President’s Page” for the CC Bulletin. I am honored, thrilled, and privileged to be the 12th president of Colorado College. I wrote of the extraordinary CC people I met early on – students, faculty, staff, parents, and alumni (some of whom I had known before I knew anything else about CC).

Pam Shipp ’69 has come home. Although in some ways, she never  really left. She currently is a part-time counselor at the center, as well as the founder of a leadership consulting business, PL Shipp & Associates. The tagline on her website, “Leadership and Service,” is indicative of the direction Shipp’s life has taken. “You can’t separate the two. Part of my job is to serve,” she says.
