The Next Step: Gaining Experience for Careers, Grad School, and Life After CC

You’ve seen the bumper stickers, or the t-shirts: “I am a liberal arts graduate. Would you like fries with that?” A criticism sometimes leveled at liberal arts education is that its broadly educated, creative-thinking students lack specific skills that translate to the career world. While we believe the value of a liberal arts education is self-evident, two programs at Colorado College are helping to ensure that students move successfully into postgraduate projects and careers — the Public Interest Fellowship Program and the Transitions Fellowship Program. The Public Interest Fellowship Program Nearly 26 percent of Colorado College alumni who graduated in the last five years chose to work in the nonprofit…

Antarctica Voyage: A Unique, Intellectual Adventure!

Eighteen CC alumni, spouses, and family members participated in a journey to Antarctica led by CC Geology Professor Christine Siddoway, who has been conducting geological research in Antarctica for more than 20 years. The CC contingent met in Ushuaia, Tierra del Fuego, Argentina, and on December 31 boarded the Corinthian II, which served as their home, lecture hall, dining facility, and expedition staging area for the next 12 days. Coincidentally, also on board the Corinthian II was a group from the Carnegie Museum of Natural History, led by Museum Director Sam Taylor ’73. The trip, says Amy Louis ’84, epitomized CC’s “unique intellectual adventure.” The uniqueness was apparent in the…

Achieving Our Vision Campaign: Where We Stand

The Year of the Tiger has arrived. As we said goodbye to one of the most challenging years in memory, we look forward to seeing what 2010 has in store, both personally and for Colorado College. The Vision for Colorado College remains strong, and the passion of alumni, parents, and friends of the college remains intact. The past year did show adjustments in how people chose to invest in their CC passion. For Today Regular, sustained annual giving makes all the difference. Unrestricted giving at all levels remained strong in 2009, although fewer people felt able to make their annual gifts. In celebration of those who demonstrate their commitment to…

Read Suzanne Haley Woolsey’s resume and be impressed: Stanford and Harvard degrees in psychology and social relations and high-powered positions in the public, private, and government sectors. But meet Sue Woolsey P’97, P’98, P’00, who jokes that she can’t keep a job, and be impressed by her down-to-earth personality, intent gaze, and warm smile. She wants the best for her family – and that now includes everyone at Colorado College. Woolsey became the chair of the CC Board of Trustees in May 2009; she was recruited to join the board at a parents’ event in the mid-1990s. Woolsey and her husband, Jim, former CIA director under President Clinton, have three…

Documentary Pays Tribute to Professor Fred Sondermann

Fred Sondermann is a legendary name at Colorado College. He taught political science at CC from 1953 until his death in 1978. Those on campus during that time were fortunate to have known him; those who came later were aware of his lasting influence. Both those who knew him and those who didn’t now have the opportunity to glimpse a small, but extremely moving, piece of Sondermann’s history. A Colorado Springs filmmaker has produced a film based on Sondermann’s journal and an article he wrote for the Summer 1970 issue of the Bulletin*, in which he describes returning to his boyhood home in Germany, which he fled 30 years earlier,…

From the President

Dear Alumni, Parents, and Friends of Colorado College, The Crestone Peaks. Layers of sky, clouds, and bison. There is an unusual magic about our own Steve Weaver’s photography, and particularly so in this issue’s cover shot. A poster version graces the front door of my office, and every day students, faculty, staff, and other visitors stop in their tracks to look at it. In his photos for the annual State of the Rockies project posters, Steve captures the essence of what Professor Walt Hecox ’64 calls “our own backyard.” This beautiful backyard has always afforded Colorado College students unique opportunities for research, field study, recreation, and aesthetic appreciation.
