Peak Profile – Mary Mashburn ’83
Mary Mashburn ’83 and her husband, Steve St. Angelo, operate a two-person letterpress paper goods shop in Baltimore, Md. They launched their shop four years ago after they purchased their first press. “Steve and I had taken a letterpress printing class at the Center for Book Arts in New York, and after that I really wanted my own press,” Mary says. “My press obsession got a little out of hand.” They now have four Vandercook presses (made by a company that is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year), two hand-fed platen (flat surface) presses, an automated platen press, an automated cylinder press and a number of table-top presses, including two…Read more

Peak Profile – Rob Gard ’92
I recently resigned my position on the Colorado College Alumni Association Board (AAB) so I can devote more time to whiskey. Lest anyone suggest I need to allocate my now-available AAB energy to AA, I have an explanation. But, first: As a member of the AAB, I was on a brainstorming team that worked to define the AAB’s mission to connect alumni to their alma mater. We determined the AAB’s purpose was to deliver the Colorado College experience to thousands of alumni around the world. But, what exactly is the Colorado College experience? Is it having your mind whirl as a professor points you in an unknown intellectual direction? Is…Read more

Peak Profile: Arch Doty ’47
Arch Doty ’47 is nothing if not persistent. And patient. He waited 61 years after graduating from Colorado College to find out what his senior year grades were. Back in the spring of 1947, Doty couldn’t wait around to find out. He finished his last exam at CC, immediately packed his car and headed to Florida to ask a young woman by the name of Adah to marry him, thus missing graduation and the opportunity to get his final grades. When he got to Florida and popped the question, she refused him – for the fifth time. So Doty went home to Connecticut and got on with his life. He…Read more

The Alumni Association Board Student Leadership Scholarship
The Colorado College Alumni Association Board Development Committee has the privilege of interviewing outstanding applicants each year for the AAB Student Leadership Scholarship. The funds for this endowed scholarship come from the donations of Alumni Association Board members and others in the Colorado College community. This year, given the greater need for financial aid and an outstanding applicant pool, the committee was determined to award four scholarships, one more than in previous years. In an effort to “top-off” the scholarship fund, Christine Moon Schluter ’65, chair of the committee, suggested that the committee, as well other alumni in the room, individually contribute to the fund. Within five minutes, more than…Read more

Building Bridges and Scholarships
You never know where a game of bridge, or the “bridge” of friendships and alumni help, will take you. When Carol James and Jody Smith were at Colorado College, they spent a lot of time playing bridge. “Maybe more than we should have,” they both admit somewhat sheepishly today. When truly desperate for someone to round out the game, they would “sink to the lowest depths and tolerate having either Brad (James) or I play,” said David Smith. Little did they know then that the friendships formed over a hand of bridge would someday help to bridge a financial need in a young person’s life. Colorado College’s Barker-James-Smith Scholarship is…Read more
