He replaced Dave Moross, who retired in May after nearly 28 years of service. Cross earned a degree in economics from CC; he had worked in athletic communications at the Air Force Academy since 2000. “We Will Remember Them” Colorado College’s Wartime History
Studying war has been a personal and professional passion of mine for many years. As a CC student, my independent minor focused on the war poetry emerging from the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. At Dartmouth College for my Master’s, I published a paper on my grandfather’s experiences in World War II, and my thesis…Read more

In Memoriam
Jerry Carle, iconic football coach, died April 12, 2014. The Minnesota native and Marine Corps veteran was 90 years old. He was a major influence on CC’s athletics programs from his start as football assistant in 1948 to his retirement in 1990. Jerry also served stints as director of athletics as well as basketball and golf coach. “When I think of Colorado College athletics, he is the first person I think of,” said current AD Ken Ralph. “He loved the place and what it did for the students he worked with. He was so positive and upbeat about the community and the college.” His 1971-76 football teams attained a winning…Read more

Boettcher Scholar Receives Grant
Colorado College Assistant Chemistry and Biochemistry Professor Amy Dounay ’96, who came to CC as a student on a Boettcher Scholarship and graduated with a B.A. in chemistry, has been awarded a $225,000 Boettcher Webb-Waring Biomedical Research Award. She is one of only seven scientists in the state to receive the award this year. The three-year grant will support Dounay’s research on the design, synthesis, and evaluation of new drugs for African sleeping sickness. The funding supplements her recent $35,000 grant from the Research Corporation for Science Advancement to support the same research. African sleeping sickness, also known as Human African Trypanosomiasis (HAT), threatens the lives of thousands of sub-Saharan…Read more

Adams Confirmed as NEH Chairman
William “Bro” Adams has been confirmed by the U.S. Senate as the 10th chairman of the National Endowment for the Humanities. Adams graduated from Colorado College magna cum laude with a philosophy degree in 1972. He entered CC with the Class of 1969; however, his time on campus was interrupted by three years of service in the Army, including one year in Vietnam. It was partly that experience that motivated him to study and teach in the humanities. Adams, a native of Birmingham, Mich., served as president of Colby College from 2000 until stepping down in June. Before taking the helm there, Adams served as president of Bucknell University from…Read more

Peak Profile: Lance Cheslock ’82
Lance Cheslock obviously has the right chemistry for problem-solving — even if it doesn’t involve his chemistry degree. After graduation, he taught chemistry, physics, and art history at an East Coast prep school and tested the waters of biochemical research, before spending three years in Haiti with one of Habitat for Humanity’s first international projects, working with rural housing and community development. There he found his passion, and the model he learned — putting volunteers on the frontlines with a lot of responsibility — has been his model ever since. Returning to the U.S. in the summer of 1989, he moved to Alamosa, Colo., where his sister had a spare…Read more

Peak Profile: Michael Hannigan ’75
Michael Hannigan is one of very few individuals to claim status as a former Colorado College student, faculty member, and administrator. (For the record, he’s also married to a CC alumna, Debra Armstrong ’79 and his brother Barry is an alumnus — Class of 1973.) “I was attracted to the fact that I would be one of the early guinea pig classes on the Block Plan,” he says of his decision to choose CC over Stanford. “I believed at that time — when you’re 17 you have no idea — but I believed it would fit with my learning style.” Michael also had a push from Dick Wood, then the…Read more
