Question: What is networking, and how can I do it?

Networking is a great way to explore career options, gain valuable experience in your field, and establish relationships with industry professionals. By doing so, you can position yourself ahead of other job seekers. To start networking, its important to recognize that you already have a network that includes your friends, family, faculty alumni, classmates, and former supervisors.

To expand your network further, here are some other ways in which you can network:

  • Informal Career Networking: This can occur in social gatherings (college events, club meetings, etc.) or professional settings (Handshake events, conferences, career fairs, etc.). This type of networking is helpful to begin or strengthen relationships based on common interests.
  • Planned Career Networking: This involves informational interviews which involve preparing questions to learn about a person’s career journey, industry, job, or organization. You can reach out via email, LinkedIn, or Tiger Link to connect with professionals and alumni, facilitating job or internship opportunities.
How can you prepare for a networking meeting?
  • Develop your Elevator Pitch: This is how you market yourself, and your pitch should communicate your personal brand, convey your unique selling points, and answer the question “Tell me about yourself”. It should be around 30 seconds long.
  • Research the person and company: Show interest in the person you’re meeting with and their company by researching them on LinkedIn and Tiger Link and by reviewing the company website, social media profiles, and other public information.
