Explore the Sacred Images of New Mexican Santeros

The campus community is invited to a special two-day program centered on Transforming Images: New Mexican Santos in-between Worlds. The program will bring together artists, scholars, spiritual leaders, and community voices to explore the sacred images of New Mexican santeros that form the heart of the collection cared for by the Fine Arts Center.
On Thursday, Sept. 24, from 5-6:30 p.m., in the Agents of Care Gallery at the FAC, a panel discussion will explore the spiritual, artistic, and cultural dimensions of these works and their enduring place in the devotional life of the American Southwest.

- Charlie Carrillo, independent scholar and santero from Santa Fe
- James Córdova, Colorado College Innovator-in-Residence and Gathering Place co-curator, as moderator
- Claire Farago, Professor Emerita of Art History at the University of Colorado Boulder
- Fr. Juan Romero, retired Catholic priest and author
- Doreen Durán, descendant of the historic caretakers of the Durán Family Chapel in Talpa, New Mexico
- Melanie Yazzie, Professor of Printmaking at the University of Colorado Boulder

The program continues Friday, Sept. 25, from 6:30-7:30 p.m., also in the Agents of Care Gallery, with a keynote by Claire Farago, Professor Emerita, University of Colorado Boulder. Using historical New Mexican Christian religious images as a case study, Farago will consider what is at stake in the contested interpretation of sacred objects, including questions of cultural identity, power, and interpretative privilege. Her talk will also explore how people manipulate the material culture available in their environment to negotiate their relationship with the world.
A reception will follow in Smith Family Gallery.
