A Message from President L. Song Richardson

I believe in our community and the values that we share.

I believe in our community and the values that we share.

Dear CC Community,

Thank you for taking the time to reach out to me to share your views about the horrific violence, death, and destruction taking place in Israel and Gaza.  I share your anguish.

Speaking on behalf of myself and Cabinet, we condemn the atrocities perpetrated by Hamas against civilians, which are resulting in serious injury and death to countless numbers of innocent Palestinians and Israelis. We also denounce the acts of terror that have been perpetrated in the region beyond the current moment, and we condemn such acts no matter where they take place in the world.

What can we do in response to the escalating conflict in Gaza to support our community?

Whenever a crisis occurs, our first responsibility is to ensure the safety and well-being of our students, staff, and faculty. We did so and will continue to support our campus community in the months ahead.

Some students, staff, faculty, and alumni have shared that they feel unsafe, both on and off campus, because of antisemitism, and anti-Arab and anti-Muslim hatred. This concerns me deeply, and it should concern every one of us. It is our shared responsibility to embrace all members of our community and to ensure that we don’t allow strong emotions to result in us saying or doing anything that crosses the line into harassment or attacks on a person’s character.

We are an academic community committed to the goals of a liberal arts education. We cultivate thought leaders with the courage and knowledge to address complex problems. We provide them with the tools and the spaces to share different perspectives, to learn from each other, and to think about global crises not only in the current moment but also through the lens of history, and in the context of the future we are creating.

I believe in our community and the values that we share.

I believe we will continue to live up to them.

As we move forward in these uncertain times, let’s communicate with the intention to understand, and to share knowledge.

Let’s come together and provide care, create compassionate spaces for healing, act with kindness towards each other, and remember our shared humanity.

These are the values we are committed to as a liberal arts college. We all have a responsibility to ensure we uphold them.

L. Song Richardson

President

President’s Leadership Awards Revamped!

President’s Leadership Awards Revamped!

As Colorado College actively and collectively works to institutionalize our ADEI commitment, the President’s Leadership Awards were also revisited and evaluated for equity and inclusion. The President’s Division is committed to providing fair recognition, so, feedback was captured to help inform improvements to the awards program. Nomination criteria was revised to include anti-oppressive consideration and reduce bias. Past award recipients are also being audited. And feedback is continually welcome to help inform future improvements.

In an effort to provide greater transparency, you will now find demographic information on past honorees on the website. Nominators can also help the awards program reach further equity and inclusion by providing their demographic information if they wish. Action has been taken on all of this and more in an effort to assure everyone has an opportunity to be honored in this way.

Visit the President’s Leadership Awards page to learn more about the awards program, the nomination criteria, and how to submit a nomination. Submissions are open until Nov. 3, 2023 at 11:59 pm MST!

Honoring World Mental Health Day

Dear CC Employees,

Mental Health and Wellness is one of the lenses that we bring to our work at CC. In honor of today, October 10, being World Mental Health Day, I invite you to pause and reflect on how we can support each other’s mental health.
In the context of difficult world events, excitement about the upcoming Homecoming weekend, and the fact that Block 2 is in full swing, you and your colleagues may be experiencing stressors that can be challenging for your mental health.
We have listed some of the resources available to support your mental health on our website. I also want to highlight a couple of resources that are critical, new, or that people might not be aware of.
First, if you or someone you know is at risk of suicide, please call the 988 national suicide hotline for immediate support or call 911 for emergency care.
For non-emergent needs, our Employee Assistance ProgramGuidance Resources, is a great first step. Guidance Resources provides access to professional counseling, legal services, financial advice, and more. It’s available 24/7, and you can reach them at (800) 272-7255.
Benefits-eligible employees can also work with a counselor on a longer-term basis through Cigna’s mental health benefits. There are a couple of new benefits we can announce:
  • Bend Family Support – Available through Cigna, this program helps provide online and in person support for children, teens and families.
  • Happify – An app with games, guided mediations, and a “happiness score” to help you increase your overall level of happiness.
  • iPrevail – Get online mental health support 24/7 with iPrevail. iPrevail offers various programs, including on-demand peer support chats with a trained coach, mental health assessments, lessons to learn more about your mental health, and more.
Mutual Support: We are part of a team helping to create mutual support. Remember that you are not alone. As we learned in our QPR training, just asking about how a person is doing can be a significant intervention. Reach out to your colleagues, supervisors, or HR if you need someone to talk to. We are here to support one another.
Don’t forget to move: Physical health supports mental health. Take advantage of our beautiful outdoor spaces or the fitness center. Ask a coworker to do a walk-and-talk for your next meeting.
You can also sign up for our wellness newsletter to stay up to date on offerings from CC.
Thank you all for supporting our community’s mental health, not only on World Mental Health Day, but every day. If you have any questions or need assistance accessing these resources, please don’t hesitate to contact our HR team at HR@ColoradoCollege.edu or (719) 389-6421.
Thank you for being a valuable part of our Colorado College community and creating a supportive and caring environment for us all.
Sincerely,

Ryan Simmons

Vice President for People & Workplace Culture

Coming Together

Dear Colorado College Community,

We heard from many of you yesterday and write to acknowledge the pain and grief felt across our CC community. We are grappling with the death and destruction precipitated by the attack and kidnapping of Israeli citizens and others by Hamas and the resulting war in the region. The sheer scope of the civilian deaths in Palestine and Israel is unfathomable.

These events take an emotional toll, and we understand the need to process through community, conversation, and connection. We hope that you will join us for the gathering today from 3:30-4 p.m. on the Labyrinth (north side of Shove Memorial Chapel). This will be an opportunity to come together, offer support, and find solace in one another’s presence.

Please remember that CC offers various resources to support you, including the following:

Many of you have expressed a strong interest in gaining a deeper understanding of the region and the events leading up to the current conflict. As an academic community dedicated to knowledge and growth, we anticipate that there will be opportunities in the coming weeks for learning more.

In times of distress, our campus community demonstrates resilience and compassion. Let us stand together, supporting one another as we navigate these tragic and challenging times.

Sincerely,
