Questions Corner: Your Questions Answered!

Did you see the Career Center tabling in Worner Campus Center on Halloween? We asked you to share questions you were afraid to ask the Career Center so we can answer them in our newsletter. 
This week’s question is: How can I get an internship abroad?
Answer: There are many benefits to having an internship abroad that can build your cultural competence, language skills, and adaptability. As you consider your plans, there are a few key ways to explore opportunities abroad.
1. Many students explore programs that will help place you into an internship abroad and provide support with finding housing and securing work authorization. While this is the most convenient way of finding an opportunity abroad, programs do come with a cost. Use program websites to also do research on internship placement sites and where interns live.
2. Do your research! Be sure you know what work authorization requirements you need to follow where you hope to apply. Know that Colorado College cannot provide support to obtain a visa unless you are participating in a CC-led program.
3. Already have a study abroad semester planned? Consider participating in an internship during your semester! Almost all semester study abroad programs will have an internship option, so take advantage of that option if provided. Connect with Global Education as you are considering your options.
4. Check out job boards that are oriented to searching abroad such as idealist.org and goinglobal (provided through Tutt Library online). As you are looking for resources, check out the Career Center’s working abroad pathway page.

Half Block Update and Registration Information


A new Half Block course has been added! Harnessing Design Thinking through Innovation is a 4-day class in which you will tackle a real business challenge, using design thinking and innovation to create a solution. This course is free to take. You can register for this class through Student Life Summit. Reach out to Emma Fairburn at efairburn@coloradocollege.edu with any questions.

Half Block Registration is open from October 2nd at 8:30 a.m. to December 4th at 5 p.m. Students can participate in the Wall Street Prep in-person session or an online Kaplan test prep session for a very low cost! This is a wonderful opportunity to explore your interests and gain professional knowledge and skills. Registration is through SUMMIT.

Colorado College Activism Institute

Program Dates: May 28 – July 14, 2024
This .25-credit mentored internship program is an opportunity for students to engage in activist and/or advocacy work that aims to confront escalating surveillance and criminalization of BIPOC (Black, indigenous and people of color) communities by collaborating directly with community-based organizations in the U.S. Southwest (Denver, Albuquerque, and El Paso, Austin, and San Marcos, Texas).

The program is open to all current first-years, sophomores, and juniors at Colorado Colleges, all schools in the Associated Colleges of the Midwest, and other select colleges. The Israel-Hamas War: How Did We Get Here? And How Do We Go Forward?
The horrific attack by Hamas on Israeli civilians on Oct. 7, and the military retaliation in Gaza by the Israel Defense Forces, raise many questions. Protests for and against both sides have turned ugly. Antisemitism and Islamophobia are on the rise. How did the Israeli intelligence sector miss this? Is the United States responding in the right way? How did we get here? And how do we go forward?
A presentation and dialogue with Colonel Kris Bauman, PhD, Brent Scowcroft Professor of National Security Studies at the United States Air Force Academy, will offer answers to these questions that go far deeper than the hateful “discussion” on social media and the often-shallow coverage in the news.

Colonel Kris A. Bauman, PhD

Colonel Bauman is the Brent Scowcroft Professor of National Security Studies at the United States Airforce Academy and teaches American Government, American Foreign & National Security Policy, Middle East Politics, and Comparative Politics at the United States Air Force Academy.

From April 2017 to June 2018, he served at the White House on the National Security Council as the Senior Director for Israeli, Palestinian, Jordanian, and Egyptian Affairs.

Prior to the NSC, he was a Senior Military Fellow at the Institute for National Strategic Studies, and an adjunct professor at the Eisenhower School for National Security and Resource Strategy, both at the National Defense University in Washington, D.C.

In 2013-2014, during the negotiations led by Secretary of State John Kerry between Israelis and Palestinians, Colonel Bauman was the Chief of Staff for the Senior Advisor to the Secretary of Defense, General John R. Allen, USMC, retired. General Allen’s team was responsible for the security portfolio of a proposed two-state agreement.

Timesheet Instructions for Fall Break

Dear Faculty and Staff,

Fall Break is fast approaching. The Payroll Office will be closed during the break, and will be processing payroll Tuesday, November 28, to ensure employees get paid on November 30, 2023. 

This means timesheets for the Nov. 7-21 pay period are due early. 

Submit timesheets no later than 5 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 16, estimating your hours to be worked through Nov. 21. If there are any changes from your estimated hours, please notify the Payroll Office when you return from Fall Break.

NOTE: If you do not work Monday, Nov. 20, and Tuesday, Nov. 21, please record your scheduled hours under “Fall Break.” 

If you are REQUIRED to work on Monday, Nov. 20, and Tuesday, Nov. 21, please record the hours that you worked in both the “regular pay” (for hours worked) and “Fall Break” (for hours scheduled). On-call and temporary employees are only eligible for holiday pay if you are required to work. Student workers are not eligible for holiday pay.

Supervisors, please make sure timesheets are approved no later than 5 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 17.
