Heartbreaking News

Thursday, July 29, 2021

Dear Campus Community,

We are heartbroken and in disbelief as we share that our wonderful colleague, friend, and campus leader Brian Young, vice president for ITS, has passed away. Brian had a special warmth and connection with everyone he met, and he supported us all in many ways.

We will come together in community at 4 p.m. today in McHugh Commons.

As we experience a wave of emotions and grieve in our own ways, may we find gentleness, care, and kindness for ourselves and each other.

We encourage you to lean on these additional resources:

Counseling Center at (719) 389-6093 or counselingcenter@coloradocollege.edu“>counselingcenter@coloradocollege.edu
Chaplain Kate Holbrook at (719) 389-7986 or %20kholbrook@coloradocollege.edu“>kholbrook@coloradocollege.edu

After hours and over the weekend, you can connect to a licensed mental health provider by calling the Counseling Center and dialing 2.

Employees may also seek counseling through the Employee Assistance Program.

Additional information can be found here:

We will share more information about Brian’s life and ways to remember him in the coming days.

With deepest sympathy,

Song

Looking Ahead: Conversations with the President

Thursday, July 22, 2021

Dear CC Community,

In the few short weeks since I joined this remarkable and vibrant community, I am already inspired by all that I have learned from you and all the incredible possibilities we have for our future. It is an exciting time to be at CC.

This year, my priority is to connect with you. I look forward to seeing our campus through your eyes; learning about all the opportunities we have to make an impactful difference in the lives of our students, staff, faculty, and broader community; and co-creating our ambitious and impactful future.

Our conversations will begin soon and take a variety of formats.  No matter the format, I will always ask the same series of questions.  At the end of the process, we will upload all the information gathered from each engagement to a page on the President’s Office website. The website will also track my progress in meeting with you, my new and remarkable colleagues, and catalog the themes that emerge from our conversations.

Of course, some of you may be unavailable to meet with me at the time that is scheduled, or you may have additional thoughts to share after our meeting ends. Don’t worry. The website will provide a space for you to share your additional responses to my questions.

Krystal Duran, Zak Kroger, and Lyrae Williams will be working with me to make this process as seamless as possible. It will take some time to schedule these meeting throughout the year, so we appreciate your patience. More information will be available soon.

I look forward to engaging with you! Let’s dream big together.

Sincerely,

Song

Announcing Vice President for Advancement

Wednesday, July 7, 2021

Dear CC Community,

Just a few days after officially launching into my role as Colorado College president, I’m pleased to welcome a new member to our college leadership team. After a comprehensive national search, we have selected Mary Ann Schwartz Graffeo as vice president for advancement.

Mary Ann will provide strategic direction and leadership for development, advancement services, alumni and parent relations, volunteer leadership, boards, college events, and annual giving. She will officially join CC on Aug. 18.

Mary Ann shares, “I am honored and delighted to be joining the Colorado College community of colleagues, friends, alumni, students, and their families. I look forward to being a part of President Richardson’s leadership team and to supporting her aspirational vision for the future of Colorado College. I am excited about getting started and about helping advance this extraordinary and unique learning community.”

Mary Ann is an accomplished team builder and highly effective leader. In addition, she brings vision that will help Colorado College become even stronger. I am excited to build on that vision as we work to increase access, further our antiracism commitment, and dedicate ourselves to continued academic excellence.

She joins CC after serving as senior associate dean of advancement at the University of Southern California Viterbi School of Engineering. At USC Viterbi, her leadership, strategy, and acumen for fundraising resulted in surpassing Viterbi’s campaign goal of $500 million, achieving the largest single fundraising initiative for an engineering school worldwide. She was personally credited with raising over $125 million in support of transformative initiatives throughout the school.

During her tenure from 2013 to 2021, Mary Ann and her advancement team added 63 new endowed scholarships and fellowships and 30 new endowed chairs and professorships. She launched multiple diversity and equity programs at USC Viterbi Advancement including an “Equity and Justice Primer” for team members and a department-wide “21-Day Racial Equity Habit Building Challenge.” She’s recognized by her USC colleagues for creating a culture of strategic collaboration, communication, and success, just a few of the traits that drew us to select Mary Ann to lead CC’s Advancement Division.

Throughout her nearly two-decade career, Mary Ann grew annual giving, surpassed major campaign goals by more than 30%, cultivated donors, formed meaningful relationships, and developed giving strategies at the University of Texas, as well as in the nonprofit and health care sectors.

I am thankful to our search committee and Board of Trustees for their leadership in this search.

Please join me in welcoming Mary Ann as she joins the CC community.

Sincerely,

L. Song Richardson

President

Hello, Colorado College!

Thursday, July 1, 2021

Dear CC Community,

On this, my first day at CC, I am humbled, honored, and excited to begin my tenure as the 14th president of Colorado College. Since this spring, I’ve met many of you via Zoom and a few of you in person. Your optimism and love for CC are palpable. I look forward to the coming weeks and months as we emerge from the pandemic, complete Summer Session, and begin a promising new academic year. Until then, I hope you enjoy this video about my arrival and the community I’ve found here.

Warmly,
