The CC Student Farm is Back!

Are you looking for more ways to meaningfully interact with your food and the environment? Join the CC Student Farm! Students work on the farm to create a small-scale, hand-powered, sustainable agricultural space that builds community through farming and generates fresh produce for students and community members. Getting involved on the farm is a great way to interact with nature without leaving campus, take your mind off the stress of academics, and learn about sustainable agriculture while getting your hands dirty. The CC Student Farm is a space for anyone interested in engaging more with the land their food comes from — no experience necessary! The club meets at 4 p.m. Thursdays at the farm (in the backyard of Stewart House, 1228 Wood Ave). Contact Kai Matthiasson (k_matthiasson@coloradocollege.edu) or Eileen Miller (e_miller@coloradocollege.edu) to get involved!

Look Out for Food Pantry and Swap Space Job Opportunities During Block 3

CC’s Food Pantry and Swap Space is seeking students passionate about food access and reducing consumption to fill two part-time (5-10 hours per week) positions. Upon re-opening in Worner, the FPSS will serve the student population to meet basic needs (food, hygiene, and cleaning items) while working to reduce unnecessary consumption by giving items a second life within the CC community. Highly organized and responsible individuals with customer service skills should apply to the FPSS student worker or FPSS student manager positions once posted on Handshake.

COP26

This year’s United Nations Climate Change Conference runs from Oct. 31-Nov. 12. The 26th Conference of the Parties, taking place in Glasgow, Scotland, will host tens of thousands of climate experts, representatives, policymakers, and citizens to discuss the state of our climate. The aim of COP26 is to reach international agreements on goals such as global net zero emissions, ecosystem conservation, environmental justice, and climate financing. Representatives from almost every country on the planet will attend to renew their commitment to addressing the climate crisis — and the world will be watching.

To stay up to date with the events of the year’s most important climate summit, check out this webpage with links to a live webcast and important social media accounts to follow.

Offset Your Holiday Travel

Are you going home for Fall Break and looking to offset your travel emissions? Look no further for a solution: the Office of Sustainability has compiled an easy resource to help you reduce your carbon footprint. Use the easy Travel Offset Calculator to discover how much greenhouse gas your trip emits and then click to offset your individual emissions and counterbalance some of your travel impacts. The cost of offsets is much less than the cost of travel, but your investment greatly supports important climate initiatives. Learn more about carbon offsets here.

Get Green Room Certified!

Looking for a way to support sustainability at CC without leaving your bedroom? Get Green Room Certified! The Green Room Certification Program encourages and rewards students living on campus to practice sustainable habits and live more environmentally consciously. After completing the checklist, certified rooms will receive prizes including a certification plaque, a reusable cutlery set, and a coupon for Local Goods. There’s still time! President’s Leadership Awards

Now is the time to honor individuals or groups who have made a difference in your life and the lives of others at CC.

As part of our strategic initiative to foster workplace excellence, it’s important to recognize those who are making a difference.

There is still time to submit nominations for the President’s Leadership Awards. The President’s Leadership Awards Program recognizes colleagues who make an impact as strong leaders, innovative role models, and positive collaborators.
Submit nominations now through the end of Block 3. The deadline to submit nominations is November 19, 2021. Previous winners were nominated by faculty or staff colleagues.
Check out examples of winning nominations to help inspire you in drafting a stand-out submission. Tips include telling a detailed story about the person or group and how they demonstrated the qualities of the award namesake, the college’s leadership philosophy, and CC’s antiracism efforts.
Nominate a deserving colleague or team of individuals, based on the following criteria:
  • Brian Young Community Service Award: This awardee demonstrates a continued pattern of voluntary service to the college and exceeding their job duties, as demonstrated by former Vice President for Information Technology Brian Young. The awardee must have been employed by the college for five years or more. Submit a nomination.
  • Victor Nelson-Cisneros Diversity and Inclusion Award: This awardee exemplifies the qualities of former Associate Dean of the College Victor Nelson-Cisneros in supporting diversity and inclusion on campus. Submit a nomination.
  • Glenn Brooks Innovation and Courage Award: This awardee displays the courage and innovative qualities of former Dean of the College/Dean of the Faculty Glenn Brooks, who was one of the founders of the Block Plan. Submit a nomination.
  • Jane Cauvel Cultivating Collaboration and Community-building Award: This awardee cultivates collaboration on campus and is a community-builder, as exemplified by Jane Cauvel, professor of philosophy emerita, and the college’s first ombudsperson. Submit a nomination.
Winners each year will receive: $2,500 cash prize, a feature on the President’s Leadership Awards website, and a leadership trophy to display for a full year. Winners will be announced in Block 5. The individuals who submit winning nominations will also be recognized.
Thank you for helping to recognize CC’s exceptional leaders, and to honor the individuals who strive to make our college great.
For questions about the awards program or the nomination process, please contact Lyrae Williams

Ongoing Screening Testing with eMed

Colorado College

Dear Campus Community,

COVID-19 testing technology has evolved rapidly since Fall 2020. Our weekly screening testing program has enabled us to effectively interrupt chains of infection early, prevent outbreaks, and engage in in-person learning. The introduction of fast, accurate, and convenient antigen tests has made self-monitoring for COVID-19 more convenient and widely available.

Starting in the second half of November, we plan to partner with eMed, a telehealth provider, whose certified guides supervise via telehealth sessions self-administered BinaxNow tests. eMed provides results within 15 minutes via an app (Navica). As an added benefit, these results can also be used for travel, and eMed will report results to the county health department (per state requirements) and CC.

Antigen tests (not to be confused with antibody tests) detect COVID-19 infections very reliably during the infectious period, making them an excellent tool for screening testing. Their tendency not to pick up prior infections after recovery will help to reduce isolation needs. CC students who have tried out these self-administered at-home tests found them convenient to use and less unpleasant. Of course, no test is perfect. Because some false positive results are to be expected, all positive antigen test results are followed up by a molecular test at the Student Health Center. Testing protocols will remain the same and can be adjusted as the course of the pandemic requires.

eMed will provide screening testing to vaccinated students (a percentage each week), unvaccinated students (twice weekly), and unvaccinated employees. The Student Health Center will continue providing molecular Abbott ID Now tests for symptomatic COVID-19 testing, testing after exposure, and follow-up testing to positive antigen tests.

We will be in touch with more information regarding test kit distribution and the Navica app next week.

Please contact us with your questions at covid19@coloradocollege.edu

Thank you!

Sexual Assault Forum Canceled

View this email in your browser

Friday, October 29, 2021

Dear Campus Community,

We are following up on the message we sent on Tuesday about sexual assault support and resources. Upon hearing concerns from students, we are taking a step back to reconsider how best to approach listening to student needs and providing information and support.

The forum that was initially planned for Monday, Nov. 1, is canceled. We are in discussions with the Student Title IX Assistance and Resource Team, the Student Organization for Sexual Safety, CC Student Government Association, and other student groups and individuals, and will provide an update on next steps soon.

These issues and communications may have brought up feelings such as anxiety, trauma, or hurt. If you need support, please contact the sexual assault response coordinatorSTART, or turn to the college’s other support resources.

Sincerely,

Thoughts from the Director: Get Engaged!

The Arts at CC is more than just an office; it is an ethos. It seeks to make the arts an integral part of all members of our community, by amplifying the important work being done with the arts within the academic mission of the college.

But what does that mean? What is academic engagement in the arts?

There are a variety of ways this unfolds, both historically and presently at the college. We’re most interested in how it works moving forward. CC President L. Song Richardson puts it best: “As we think about how we can do what we do better, we have an incredible opportunity to stand as a model for the role of the arts in the liberal arts experience.”

Therefore, we’re opening the doors to explore the breadth and diversity of our CC community, to share case studies on successful collaborations, desires, and hopes for greater arts integration into the curriculum.

Starting November 10, The Arts at CC and the FAC will host a series of “Third Wednesday” gatherings each block focused on the impact and integration of the arts throughout our campus. This first gathering will take place at 3:30 in the Taste Restaurant space in the FAC.

These convenings will be informal opportunities to listen, learn, and brainstorm. They will inform our plans and efforts for the 2022-23 academic year, increase familiarity and relationship building with the FAC, foster new initiatives, and further stimulate a culture of arts-based pedagogy and immersion for our campus.

Come join us.  Get engaged!

Sincerely,

Ryan Raul Bañagale

Finding Events

How do you quickly and easily find arts events on campus?

We’re trying to make that easier! Here are two ways:

Follow The Arts at CC on Instagram (@theartsatcc). During #ArtsOctober, we’ve featured a different aspect of our creative community in addition to actively sharing events and opportunities by the many groups, students, faculty, and staff doing creative work across our campus. We encourage you not only to tag us in your own arts-related posts, but also to share posts directly to us so we can feature them on our Instagram Story

Don’t do Insta? Bookmark our Arts at CC event calendar.  This continuously updated feed highlights all arts-related events entered into the campus calendar.  Want to make sure your event appears?  Ask your venue/Ungerboeck manager to tag “The Arts at CC” under the calendar tab.  Don’t understand that last sentence? Just send us an email and we’ll help you out!

Rui’s Reflections: Paraproffing – Why and How?

“So why are you the Arts at CC paraprof?” I get asked this question a lot by friends. I was initially a Mathematical Economics major and later switched to Asian Studies. But art was integral to my experience at CC. Dance Workshop rehearsals and voice lessons provided me with community and solace. Taking the Feminist & Gender Studies course “Discourse of the Veil” with Professor Nadia Guessous in the FAC in conversation with the interdisciplinary Anishinaabekwe artist Rebecca Belmore’s exhibit “Facing the Monumental” was a life-altering learning experience. Not to mention the incredible friendships I forged with talented creative students at CC.

As a student, I was lucky enough to have cultivated art as a habit. Now as a paraprof, I hope to help co-create inclusive art spaces that center care and community, raise critical questions about power, and imagine beyond the limits of our impoverished political reality.

As the writer, activist, and Black feminist adrienne maree brown beautifully said (it’s also the quote on the Mobile Arts truck!): “Art is not neutral. It either upholds or disrupts the status quo, advancing or regressing justice.” In this spirit, we partnered with the community organization Food to Power and CC Mobile Arts in September and brought together four convergence classes for live performances and a panel on “Music, Food, Social Justice”. We invite artists in residence working on the multimedia performance project, “Boy mother / faceless bloom” to engage with students on important questions of mythology, power, and freedom. In partnership with the Pikes Peak Library District and CC Mobile Arts, we supported a series of poetry readings by CC English Professor Nate Marshall from his book “Finna” which celebrates Black vernacular and hope. You see, the Arts at CC is everywhere and for everyone. I look forward to hearing your stories with the arts at CC and beyond!

Sexual Assault Resources, Support

View this email in your browser

Tuesday, October 26, 2021

Dear Campus Community,

The values of honor, integrity, and respect are the foundation of our campus codes of conduct, which includes the Nondiscrimination and Anti-harassment policy and procedures and our Title IX Sexual Harassment Grievance Procedures. These policies reflect our commitment to seeking accountability — both on the individual and community levels.

We have become aware of rumors circulating regarding sexual assault and the use of drugs to facilitate sexual assault. We want to reach out to the entire campus to share our concern about such behaviors and to let you know how the college is responding.

When rumors related to sexual violence emerge, we undertake efforts to gather information and determine who the involved parties are in order to provide support resources and reporting options for the impacted parties. We do, however, respect a person’s decision to not file a formal report and, except in rare circumstances, are unable to pursue disciplinary action against any member of our community if the impacted parties choose not to file a formal report.

The safety of our students is paramount for us, and we take all reports of violence, harassment, and discrimination very seriously. We are deeply saddened to hear that members of our community have experienced harm, and we are committed to providing support and resources to those individuals.  We are also mindful that students may not always wish to make an official report, which is why on-campus confidential resources are available to students regardless of their decisions about formal reporting processes.

Confidential resources include:

  • Anna Thompson, Sexual Assault Response Coordinator: office (719) 227-8101; advocate on-call (719) 602-0960; sarc@coloradocollege.edu
  • Counseling Center: (719) 389-6093, press 2 after hours to be connected directly with a mental health provider;
     counselingcenter@coloradocollege.edu
  • Chaplain Kate Holbrook: (719) 389-7986
  • Learning Development and Outreach Coordinator Noble Gough: (719) 389-6198
  • Student Title IX Assistance and Resource Team, START: start@coloradocollege.edu

These confidential resources can provide clear information, options, and confidential support to assist students in making decisions about filing a formal complaint/charges and seeking medical care or counseling. These resources can also assist students in managing the impact of misconduct on their academic and social functioning.

Each of us has responsibility for helping to create a community of accountability in which we identify behaviors that are harmful or inconsistent with our community values, including acknowledging when we create or contribute to harm ourselves. Being an effective Active Bystander means responding to the behaviors we see. As we work to support survivors and investigate misconduct, it is important to recognize that alcohol is the drug most frequently used to facilitate sexual assault. Whether used in conjunction with other substances or not, the presence of alcohol in social situations is a signal for us all to increase our vigilance to ensure that no one takes advantage of vulnerable individuals.

We will host an all-campus forum on Monday, Nov. 3, 6:30 p.m. (location to be determined soon) to share additional information and hear more from students about these issues. We hope this forum will be an opportunity for brave conversation where we remind each other of CC’s values — that respect and consent are priorities every day in every interaction. We hope to challenge ideas around what it means to hold oneself and peers accountable to the harm we may cause while supporting survivors directly impacted by interpersonal violence. The forum will be a place to connect as a community and empower one another to move forward understanding how one can use their unique strengths to contribute to safety of everyone on campus.

We will not discuss individual cases in this forum, but will seek to address broad issues impacting the entire campus community. In the meantime, you can learn more about the signs and behaviors to be watchful of, as well as the ways to take action, through our campus Active Bystander Intervention Campaign (BADASS: Be Aware, Decide to Act, Say Something). If you are a social host, you can find resources for planning a safer party on the Wellness Resource Center’s Resources and Handouts page (under Social Hosts, Alcohol, and Substance Use), and the Party Culture and Substances at CC page.

Sincerely,
