News for Block 1: A Bold Year Ahead

Global Education Website Update

The Global Education & Field Study Website is going through a renovation process as we try to create a site that has more intuative navigation and which speaks to prospective students, families, current students, staff, and faculty.  New features will be added throughout the fall, but for now, the main updates are in the structuring and presentation of key information around study away at CC.  Feel free to check out the updated Global Education site(s) here. 

Please encourage your students to visit, or guide your advisees to the site and the vast array of program possibilities found their.  The website has detailed information on application processes, financial aid, credit transfer, and how to plan to maximize their experience. 

Upcoming Faculty Events

We have two different faculty-facing workshops & info sessions this fall.  Our “Build A Block Away” Workshop is open to all faculty interested in developing a block away course.  We will cover everything from starting points to budgeting, partnerships, hiring a Second Adult, and the timeline to take your idea from concept to proposal, and on to enrolled course.  The second event is our Faculty Leaders Lunch, a program specific to faculty already scheduled to lead students on a study away during the upcoming year.  If you are leading a block away or a longer half- or full-semester, please plan on attending one of the upcoming Faculty Leader Lunches.

Upcoming Application Cycles

and Course Proposal Dates

We may just be starting off the 2023-2024 year, but a lot of dates, deadlines and application periods for the upcoming 18 months are already upon us. Here are the key dates to keep in mind as you advise students or plan for an Off-Campus course proposal for the next year.

SEMESTER AWAY FAIR

Wednesday, Sept. 6  (Block 1, Week 2)

This Fall’s Semester Away Fair will be in the Worner Center Lobby from 12 p.m.-2 p.m. on Sept. 6..  Representatives from all 2024 CC-led semesters as well as many of the providers of our 130+ partner semester away options will be present. Please encourage your students and advisees to attend. 

BLOCK 7-8 OFF CAMPUS BLOCK APP WINDOW CLOSES

Wednesday, Sept. 20  (Block 1, Week 4)

The last day of Block 1 is the last day when students can apply for all Block 7 and Block 8 Off-Campus block courses and be included in the financial aid review pool.  Many, though not all, programs still have open spaces to accept new students, but applicants after this date are far less likely to be able to obtain an aid award. Please remind your advisees and students of this deadline and advise them to speak to the individual course leaders to determine if space is still available in the course which interests them. 

DEADLINE FOR INITIAL FACULTY PROPOSALS FOR SUMMER 2024 OFF-CAMPUS BLOCKS

Monday, Oct. 2  (Block 2, Week 2)

Faculty wishing to offer a Summer 2024 off-campus block must complete the initial Summit proposal by Monday, October 2nd to be considered.  These initial proposals do not require syllabi, completed budgets, or SRA selections, only relevant course information and departmental approval. These proposals will be reviewed by the Dean of the Faculty and Global Education.  Faculty whose courses are approved will then work with Global Ed to confirm initial budgets and staffing (Second Responsible Adults) by the end of Block 3. 

SPRING 2024 SEMESTER AWAY STUDENT APPLICATION DEADLINE

Sunday, Oct. 15   (Block 2, Week 4)

All applications to join both partner-led spring semesters away and the CC Semester in France program for Blocks 5-8 must be completed and submitted by October 15th.  Students should complete these forms on Summit and submit them for review by October 15th.  Late applications will not be considered.  Please remind your advisees of this important deadline. 

DEADLINE FOR INITIAL FACULTY  PROPOSALS FOR 2024-2025 OFF-CAMPUS BLOCKS

Monday, Oct. 23  (Block 3, Week 1)

Faculty wishing to offer an Off-Campus block during the 2024-2025 academic year must complete the initial Summit proposal by Monday, October 23nd to be considered. These iniitial proposals do not require syllabi, completed budgets, or SRA selections. The focus is on course information and approval of the department. We absolutley expect that these proposals may need to be adjusted as the course grid is finalized later in the year, but early notification makes it possible for us to prepare for the application cycle and the marketing of programs as they develop over the remainder of the fall. These proposals will be reviewed by the Dean of the Faculty and Global Education.  Faculty whose courses are approved will then work with Global Ed to confirm initial budgets and staffing by the end of Block 4. 

SUMMER BLOCKS AWAY FAIR

Thursday, Nov. 30 (Block 4, Week 1) 

Our annual Summer Block Away Fair will be held on the 30th of November, from 12 p.m.-2 p.m. in the Worner Center Lobby.  This will feature all of the Summer Off-Campus Blocks approved in October. Please encourage your students and advisees to attend.

PLANNING TO LEAD A BLOCK AWAY OR AN OFF-CAMPUS FIELD TRIP?

Please complete the required CANVAS course “Taking Academic Courses Off-Campus” first. 

The Center for Field Study and Global Education has spent a part of the summer revising, updating, and improving the Canvas course for faculty and staff called “Taking Academic Courses Off-Campus”.  It includes guidance and college policy on everything from transportation to per diem, staffing to emergency management plans.  It is essentially our handbook for all Off-Campus travel with students, and it is required for all faculty who plan to take students off our campus as part of an academic course. .

If you are planning to take students off campus for anything from a day trip to a full semester away, you are required to complete the essential modules for each travel type (Domestic Field Trip, International Travel, Blocks or Semesters Away) prior to departure.  Completing the course once allows you to travel with students throughout the upcoming year.  There is also a set of modules for your Second Responsible Adult to complete to ensure that they are familiar with expectations and requirements for their role with your traveling group..  The course is divided into several short modules so that you can review the material at your own pace, and does include several check-in quizzes so that your completion of the course can be verified.

Planning a Regional, or Domestic Field Trip?

Don’t forget to fill out a trip plan with the Field Study Office for any travel outside of El Paso County.  You can complete the Trip Plan here and if you have any questions, Drew Cavin, the Director of Field Study, is happy to work with you or answer any questions you may have. Field Trip Fund: If you have a short, relatively local field trip you want to plan, and have exhausted department funds, the Field Study Fund may be able to help. Log into the link below on Summit to submit an application. The typical awards are $1,000. Here is the link.

Do You Have International Students, Student Workers, or Advisees? 

Just a quick reminder that changes in student status and employment can be more impactful for international students than for others.  There are some requirements and limitations placed on international students by their immigration status which call for reporting of changes to their academic program, employment status, or residence.  If you have an international advisee who is planning to do one of the following, please ensure that they reach out to our International Student & Scholar Services (ISSS) Team at isss@coloradocollege.edu“> isss@coloradocollege.edu:

• Adding, Dropping, or Changing a Major or Minor
• Seeking to take a block off or a longer leave of absence
• Seeking a Medical withdrawal or reduced course load
• Seeking or expanding on-campus employment
• Seeking an Off-Campus internship experience or research assistantship, paid or unpaid.

Our ISSS Team can help students navigate the expectations, regulations, and limitations of their F-1 status to ensure that they are able to participate fully in the life of Colorado College.  Resources are available on our website as well. 

One last quick reminder for those of you who are supervisors of student workers.  International students are limited by their immigration status to 20 hours per week as a maximum on campus for all combined employment during the academic year. With many students seeking to work more than one campus position, this is an important item to track. The Student Employment Handbook for Supervisors has information about this restriction and how to manage student hours when international students are employed by your office or department.  

Your Global Fun Fact for Block 1

If you are looking to get away from the maddening crowds, the three places on Earth that you might try are Greenland, Mongolia, and Western Sahara.  Each of these regions or nations has a population density of fewer than 1 person per square kilometer. 

If you love crowds, you might consider Monaco, Singapore, or Bahrain, each with over 2,000 people per square kilometer (Monaco with a whopping 19,000 per km²)

Deadline to Apply for Block 7 or Block 8 Study Away Courses

There are several Block 7 and Block 8 courses that are open and looking for new applicants.  Students who apply by September 20 will be reviewed for a possible aid award to help with the program fee and airfare costs for these programs.  Late applications may not be able to qualify for aid, so it is important to apply by the deadline if you are interested in one of these courses.  First Year Students should be aware that aid is distributed using academic year as a primary criteria, and as such, aid for a program prior to the summer after your first year is very rare.

Deadline for CC’s Internal Application

for Spring 2024 Semester Away

The CC application to join a partner-led semester away or our CC in France program is due by October 15th.  Late applications are not accepted, so please be sure to complete the form on Summit by the deadline.  

We also recommend completing any partner application for a semester away as soon as possible, as many programs have rolling admissions and can close before their advertised deadline.  Most programs require sophomore status to apply, and partner-providers may have their own timeline and their own qualification requirements.

Application Deadline

Fri., December 1  (Block 4 Week 1)

If you are interested in studying Mandarin in East Asia (Hong Kong, Taiwan, possibly Shanghai as well), Russian language in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, or Intermediate Italian in the heart of Italy, be sure to complete your application on Summit by December 1st, though we would always say that earlier is better. 

These Block 7-8 half-semester programs offer two blocks of immersive language and cultural study.  There is no program fee with these programs for any student who lives on campus with a full meal plan.  Students living off campus or with a reduced meal plan would have a program fee to cover housing and meals in the host countries.  

If you want to find out more before applying, we recommend visiting our Semester Away program page and speaking with each program’s faculty leader.  Applications for these programs are found on Summit in the Global Ed. portal.

 WHAT NEXT?

Just a quick reminder that if you have been approved by the faculty leader for a block away for Fall 2023 or Spring 2024, you should return to Summit to complete the post-acceptance forms and confirm your intention to join the course.  This will give the faculty the ability to provide you with the registration code needed so you can enroll in Banner and locks in your seat.  

CHECK YOUR PASSPORT

A reminder to check your passport and make sure that it is valid at least 6 months past the end of your study away program.  Many countries require this 6-month buffer and may not let you board the plane if your passport expires too soon after the program and your return flight date.

ORIENTATION MEETINGS

All blocks away have predeparture orientation meetings, typically 1-2 blocks before departure.  If you are not sure if you know when the meeting will be scheduled, please speak with your course’s faculty leader.  You do not want to miss vital information about the course, the travel plan, course expectations, and travel recommendations. 

THINKING OF WITHDRAWAL?

If you are considering withdrawing from the program, please remember to do so BEFORE THE WITHDRAWAL DEADLINE.   Late withdrawal can lead to significant financial commitment to a program you won’t be joining, sometimes as much as 100% of the program fee.  If you are unsure if you can join the block away course, we recommend speaking with the faculty leader and making a decision before the deadline.  Deadlines for upcoming blocks are:

Blocks 3 or 4: Deadline has passed.

Blocks 5 or 6: October 1

Blocks 7 or 8: December 1

WAITLISTED FOR A PROGRAM?

This is not uncommon.  Students dropping from programs is also very common, and since being on the waitlist commits you to nothing, there is no harm in staying on the waitlist for a program.  Of course, look into other summer plans, but it is possible for faculty to call students up from the waitlist up until the first day of the block before the program’s block, for example, the first day of Block 5 for a Block 6 program.  If you are invited to join a program, we will review your application for aid eligibility at that time and will notify you before you are asked to commit to the program.  Sometimes a bit of patience can really pay off.
