Meet the New Asian Studies CPCs!

Machi and Kaiting will hold various events for students interested in Asian culture. Traditional annual events at CC such as Chinese New Year Festival and Sakura Festival will continue this year, and everyone is welcome. Machi and Kaiting are looking forward to meeting and making friends with all the students who have an interest in Asian culture and Asian languages! 

Machi Niiya, the Japanese CPC, was born in Miyagi Prefecture and grew up in Tokyo. She earned her master’s degree in Linguistics at International Christian University (ICU) this past March. When asked about the most important experience in her life, Machi shares that her family moved to the United Kingdom when she was in sixth grade and stayed until her eighth-grade year. She views this experience as laying the groundwork for her later opportunities in studying and working abroad. Before coming to CC, Machi studied at Middlebury College in Vermont. 

Favorite Foods: Sushi, Ramen, Karaage (Japanese Fried Chicken)

Hobbies: photography, watching movies, skiing

Favorite Movies: Toy Story, Studio Ghibli movies, Your Name(the Japanese movie Kimi no na wa)

Kaiting Yang, the Chinese CPC, was born in Yantai in Shandong Province. She finished her undergraduate program in Haikou and is currently a graduate student in Social Psychology at Fudan University. Coming to CC is Kaiting’s first time in the US; she really likes this new environment as she enjoys living in a quiet place. Kaiting is a passionate boxing lover; when asked about the most important year in her life, she recalled the year before she attended graduate school, when she was able to commit herself to boxing training and competitions. 

Favorite Foods: Mooncake and Xiaolongbao (Chinese steamed buns)

Hobbies: Free boxing, Muay Thai

Favorite Movies: Stephen Chow’s movies, Jiang Wen’s movies (a famous Chinese actor and director)
