RECENT SERVICE:

Chair, Department of Organismal Biology and Ecology (2014-2015)

Associate Dean of the Faculty (2005-2013):

The Associate Dean of the Faculty supports faculty teaching, research, and participation in College life at all stages of career development.  The Associate Dean oversees the curriculum especially with relationship to teaching, reviews and approves course offerings and advances curricular initiatives.  The Associate Dean of the Faculty helps departments and programs to mentor new and pre-tenure faculty, achieve diversity in searches and support faculty members in non-tenure track positions.

Oversight of: International Programs, Interdisciplinary Programs (Asian Studies, Comparative Literature, Environmental Sciences, Feminist & Gender Studies, Race and Ethnic Studies, Southwest Studies), First-Year Experience, General; studies, and New Faculty Mentoring.

Worked with Director of Library, oversaw Director of Faculty Research Support, Curator of I.D.E.A. Space, works with Academic Information Technology Specialist, and with Director of Institutional Research and Assessment Support.

Chair of General Education Oversight Committee (including triennial reviews, course approvals, and developing a new assessment plan for General Education) , member of Curriculum Committee, serve on committees including: Emergency Planning, Enrollment Management, First-Year Experience Committee, International Studies Committee, College Re-accreditation Committee, Assessment Committee, Summer Session, Cultural Attractions Fund, Davis Projects for Peace; also Committee on Instruction, Information Technology Board.

Provided support for several Teagle Grants and applications, significant work on grants for Sloan (second round), FIPSE (funded for Brazil partnership), ACE International review, Englehard grant for global citizenship, Mellon for Faculty Mentoring.

Served as Interim Director for: International Programs, Colket Student Learning Center and Crown Faculty Center, First-Year Experience and Sophomore Advising, and Education Department.

Oversight for developing new financial aid policies in support of students studying abroad; conducted review of 500 study abroad programs for new approved list; review of Health Professional Advising; review of Honor Code.

Participated in site review of study abroad programs in Brazil (Juiz de Fora) and in Tanzania (ACM in Dar es Salaam).  The former led to a successful FIPSE-CAPES grant for exchange in environmental studies.  The latter led to significant improvements in the academic quality of the program.

Directed searches for: Internal Auditor, Health Professions Manager, Director of International Studies Programs, Coordinator of International Programs, Study Abroad Coordinator, Director of Quantitative Reasoning, Dean of Summer Programs, First-Year Mentor Director, Director of Southwest Studies, Director of Facilities, Director of Reading, Rhetoric, and First-Year Programs, Director of Colket Center for Academic Excellence.  Served on search committees for: Grants Coordinator, Director of Academic Technology Services.

Developed Faculty Leadership Seminar- a blend of leadership concepts, meetings with campus leaders, and research paper for the college.

Developed Chairs’ workshop- information and support for new Chairs.

Oversight for faculty diversity, particularly Riley Scholars (one-to-two year visitors teaching in a liberal arts college generally while completing their PhD) associated with the Consortium for Faculty Diversity

Other duties included review of annual salary requests, departmental staffing, review course schedules, regular review of Lecturers, developed Chair’s website, interview faculty candidates for visitor positions, oversight of in-house grants for international travel, research in Asia, and curricular development, oversight of various budgets, and so on.

Attended Harvard Management Development Program, summer 2007.

Aikido:  Established a new CCCA Club; taught classes in this defensive Japanese                              martial art from 1980-2000
Reiki: available to students interested in energy healing since 1994                                       Over 500 people taught in Reiki 1 classes, >30 Reiki masters taught
Shield classes: traditional Hopi-based medicine classes in four directions
Japanese Culture: Established relationships with other groups to teach Shiatsu,                             Ikebana, and Japanese Cooking and Dancing on campus
A.S.I.A.:  advisor to student group interested in Asia (1983-89)
Earth House (1988-89): advisor to environmental theme house
Nonviolence Theme House (1992-93): advisor

Dormitory Program: Led programs in geology, ecology, and Japan

 COMMUNITY ACTIVITIES

Lectures:  Delivered talks on local geology to community groups (Gold Prospector’s Club,Pikes Peak Mineralogical Society, Colorado Association of Science Teachers, Colorado Mountain Club, Bear Creek Docents, Garden of the Gods Park Interpretive Staff, Rotary Club, Sertoma Club, Cheyenne Mountain Adult Education, Woodland Park Geology class); on Earthquakes and Volcanoes to Kiwanis Club (PA), and Cheyenne Mountain Adult Education.
Led local field trips for: 4‑H, Knox College, Springs Area Beautiful Association, Lilly Foundation, Colorado State Teachers Association, Trinity University.
SpABA:  Chairman of the Environmental Committee (1982-1986). Involved with debate over city policy on building on the local flood plains; building on Rampart Heights; concerns with local parks, tailings in Gold Hill Mesa, and other development projects.
Energy Resources Center: Member of Board of Directors (1988-1989)
Secondary Schools:  Arranged geology lectures, participated in Career Days, judged Science Fair exhibits, delivered science keynote lecture on Gaia, Aikido and new directions in science.
Scouting:  Merit badge counselor
