Curricular Development

(extensive research beyond normal course development):

Geology of Asia – used sabbatical, Mellon Block, PICAS Grant, APS Grant and other time to create introductory-level overview of Asian geology and environmental issues (1992-1995)

Earth Systems Science – used sabbatical and other time to explore systems approach to geology, develop upper-level environmental courses, alternative paradigms for science (1988-present; esp. 1994)

Women and Science – used sabbatical, Mellon Block and other time to research issues in gender and science including feminist critiques, pedagogy and history of women in geology.  Led to major revisions of introductory geology classes, especially the unique liberal arts and science approach to environmental geology and two-block feminist approach to introductory geology as well as teaching Gender and Science class in Women’s Studies (1986-present; esp. 1991, 1994-96)

Energetic Studies:

Aikido– Japanese martial art designed to resolve conflict without violence

  • Began training in 1977
  • Black-belt (1984), Nidan belt in 1988
  • Taught Colorado College Aikido Club 1980-2000

Reiki– Japanese hands-on healing energy form

  • Began studies in 1990
  • Reiki 1 (1990); Reiki 2 (1992); Reiki Master (1994)
  • Teaching classes at CC since 1994

Shamanism– healing form and spiritual practice

  • Began studies in 1995 with Moonhawk, Hopi-trained traditional medicine man
  • Carried pipe since 1996, also carry community pipes
  • Walked shields in earth, water, fire and air; Initiated into Mother and Father medicines
  • Teach basic concepts in shield classes: pipe, medicine wheel, healing techniques, etc.
