Laura-Eloise Lilley Ray, Feb. 9, 2013, in Hemet, Calif., at age 101. She was a member of Gamma Phi Beta. After being orphaned at age 6, Laura-Eloise devoted her life to her Christian faith. She was the longest-standing member of the Idyllwild Bible Church, having been part of its inception. She was preceded in death by an infant son, Frank III, and her husband, Frank Oliver Ray Jr.

1938

Frank William Phelps, Nov. 7, 2013, in Fairbury, Neb. A World War II Army veteran, Frank was preceded in death by his wife, Heral Hedgecock Phelps. His son and daughter-in-law, James and Lori, survive.

Charles William Axtell, June 7, 2012, at age 95. He worked for Lockheed Aircraft for more than 40 years and was head of manufacturing research; he also traveled to mainland China to make contacts in the 1970s. He always remembered his CC years as a positive time in his life. He was preceded in death by his wife, Jeanne, and is survived by his daughter, Linda Goldstone; his son, Charles Jr.; and their families.

1940

Alice Elizabeth “Betty” Evans, Nov. 1, 2013, in her hometown of Colorado Springs. She retired from Colorado Springs School District 11 as an executive administrative assistant. Betty’s smile, upbeat personality, and independence defined her. She also loved the Denver Broncos.

Helen L. Brobeck Gallup, Dec. 9, 2013, in Seattle, Wash. She met her future husband, Gordon Gallup ’38, while attending CC. She was a master gardener, gourmet cook, and accomplished knitter. Survivors include Gordon G. Gallup Jr., Gerrie Severson, and Edward B. Gallup, along with 12 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. Her husband preceded her in death.

1942

Arthur Gardner Biscoe, March 31, 2013, in Oregon. He was preceded in death by his wife, Joyce.

Robert Lewis “Bob” Walker, Sept. 14, 2013, in Columbus, Ohio. He was captain of the 1936 Grand Junction (Colo.) Tigers, one of the most successful high school football teams in Colorado history. He gave his future wife, Helen Zick, ’39 (a Kappa Kappa Gamma), his Phi Gamma Delta fraternity pin while attending CC. Bob loved Ohio State football and milkshakes. Survivors include four children, Robert, Thomas, James Walker ’74, and Katherine Walker Gilbert ’71. A daughter-in-law, Mary Hickey ’76, also survives. He was preceded in death by his wife and a son, Stephen.

1943

Stuart Phelps Dodge, Aug, 8. 2013, at age 91. He served in the U.S. Army’s 10th Mountain Division during World War II; a longtime outdoorsman, he became an advocate for conservation in the Pikes Peak region. He is survived by his daughter, Lee Teran; his son, Gary Lassiter; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara, and two sons.

Elisabeth “Betty” Bishop Callahan, Sept. 17, 2013, in Bradenton, Ind. A retired teacher and former resident of South Bend, Ind., Betty was active in many civic organizations and loved crossword puzzles, genealogy, and her dogs. Her husband, Charles, handled publicity for the Miami Dolphins and died in 1995.

1944

Janet Sterling Caywood, Aug. 25, 2013, of Denver. She was 91. She had worked at Western Forensic Sciences. She is survived by her children, Kathleen Critchell and Sterling Martin; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Paul Martin in 1970 and Doug Caywood in 2000.

Paula Van Valkenburgh Wardwell, Sept. 17, 2013, in Watertown, N.Y. She considered her years at CC one of the highlights of her life, according to her daughter, Elizabeth Burdick. Her nephew, Theodore Lindeman ’73, is a CC chemistry professor. She was preceded in death by her husband, Addison; a sister, Elizabeth Lindeman ’46; and a brother-in-law, George Lindeman ’44.

1946

Blanche Wise Vine, Oct. 23, 2013, in Lookout Mountain, Colo. She was 89. Blanche earned a political science degree from CC and was active in the Colorado Republican Party. She sold mountain property, was renowned for her spectacular floral gardens, and enjoyed traveling with her husband Jim, who preceded her in death. Survivors include her son, Bruce; her daughter, Nancy Vine Kellogg ’77; and son-in-law, Howard Kellogg ’76.

1947

Sally MacNeill Buckmaster, Aug. 20, 2013, in Wilmette, Ill., at age 89. She was a member of Gamma Phi Beta. She worked as an interior designer and was a talented amateur painter.

Daniel Edward Cloud, Nov. 13, 2013, in Appleton, Wis. He enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps and, while attending CC, met his future wife, Helen Kiech ’50, who died Feb. 6. He was a member of the Kappa Sigma fraternity and worked with his father in the family automotive dealership business. Survivors include three children: Steven, Scott, and Kathy Stadler; four granddaughters; and three great-grandchildren.

1948

Robert Ryan Mason, Nov. 1, 2013. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and retired from Xcel Energy in 1991. Among survivors are his wife of 65 years, Virginia Rupe Mason; sons Mike and Harold; and daughter, Diana Raff.

1949

Sheridan Jay Underwood, Dec. 3, 2013, in San Diego, Calif. A World War II Marine Corps veteran and decorated combat pilot, Jay came to CC after the war and earned an engineering degree. He worked for Bell Telephone for 39 years. He was predeceased by his first wife, Mary Henderson, and his second wife, Bobbi Robertson. Survivors include sons Mark and Tommy Underwood; and three stepchildren, Ken, Mari-Lyn, and Robin.

Stanley Boucher, Sept. 30, 2013, in Boulder, Colo. Born to a CC physics professor, Paul Boucher, and his wife, Edythe, Stanley graduated from CC summa cum laude. He joined Phi Beta Kappa in his junior year. After serving in the Army during the Korean War, he earned a master’s of social work degree from the University of California-Berkeley, and began a career as a psychiatric social worker. He was a life member of the Colorado Mountain Club and the American Alpine Club. Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Virginia Parker Boucher ’51; a son, Eric; a brother, Gary Boucher ’63; and a sister-in-law, Susan Boucher ’63. A daughter, Julie Boucher Baillie ’85, and her husband, Clive, died in a mountaineering accident in 1996. His brother, Wes Boucher ’53, also preceded him in death.

Eugene Gregory Ashe, Oct. 16, 2013. He worked for Presbyterian Hospital in Charlotte, N.C. His wife, Evelyn, preceded him in death, as did his former spouse, Christine Spence Johnson ’48. Two children, Jim and Prather, survive.

Elisabeth Apeland Burgess, Dec. 18, 2013. Survivors include two sons, William and Robert Burgess ’83. Her husband, Fred, preceded her in death.

Barbara Dyer Jordan, Dec. 18, 2013. Her husband, Thomas, survives.

Francis H. “Frank” Balensiefer, June 4, 2013, in Hemet, Calif. He was employed by Oscar Meyer and Co. before starting a job-placement business in California. He wrote three books, including “The Stockholm Deception,” which is dedicated to his B-24 bomber crew, all of whom were shot down on a mission over Germany. Frank was supposed to be on the plane but was hospitalized and couldn’t go. Survivors include his wife, Eleanor; a daughter, Jane; and his granddaughters, Christina and Erin.

Helen Kiech Cloud, Feb. 6, 2014, in Appleton, Wis. She met her late husband, Daniel Edward Cloud ’47, on the CC campus; they were married 66 years, until his death in November. She was a proud member of the Kappa Alpha Theta sorority and, later, the Red Cross board. Survivors include three children: Steven, Scott, and Kathy Stadler; four granddaughters; and three great-grandchildren.

Erwin Windward, Oct. 26, 2013. His wife, Shirley, preceded him in death.

1951

Jeanne N. Liles, April 20, 2013, in Kensington, Md. She was 71. A computer programmer, Jeanne graduated magna cum laude from CC and worked for the data management firm Seabury & Smith. Survivors include two children, Jenny Hirst and Christopher Liles.

Charles P. Morrow, May 13, 2013. His wife, Betty; and a sister, Martha Morrow ’43, survive. A brother, Harvey Morrow ’49, preceded him in death.

Donald Nathan Hale, Oct. 21, 2103, in Fort Wayne, Ind. He was 85. He played hockey at CC, and was vice president of Beta Theta Phi Fraternity and an Eagle Scout. He retired from American Hospital Supply after 35 years of service. He enjoyed sailing, skiing, his dogs, and sports. Survivors include his daughter, Mary Mathieu, and a son, Dave. His wife of more than 60 years, Charleen, and a daughter, Sally, preceded him in death.

1952

Roland Glover “Rolly” Rogers, Dec. 28, 2013, in Littleton, Colo. He played football at CC, pledged to Sigma Chi, and met the love of his life, Carol Weigen ’50. They were married for 63 years. With a geology degree, he worked for Colorado Interstate Gas and made time for hiking, running, backpacking, and maintenance on the Colorado Trail, completing the entire 500 miles of the trail in 1997. He hung up his hiking boots in 2010 at age 82. Survivors include his wife and their children, James Rogers ’90, John, Susan Miner, and Amy Martel; a niece, Julie Reinking Schlueter ’91; a nephew, Gary Reinking ’80; and a brother-in-law, Harvey Reinking Jr. ’58. A sister, Carla Rogers Reinking ’59, preceded him in death.

Mary Sutton Gould, Aug. 31, 2013, in Naples, Fla., at age 82. She treasured her CC experience and made many lifelong friends. She was a member of the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority. She taught Latin for 10 years and also worked for the American Red Cross and Planned Parenthood. Survivors include her husband, George, and their three children, Martha, Robert, and James; and a niece, Julie Hancock Armistead ’78.

Robert “Bob” Shelton Wilkins, Aug. 29, 2013, in Peoria, Ill. Bob graduated from CC with a degree in economics and banking and was a member and treasurer of the Sigma Chi fraternity. He also was the captain and driving force behind the formation of the CC swim team. He served in the U.S. Army as an intelligence specialist, and then worked as a real estate broker and developer for 60 years. He had an outgoing personality and enjoyed fishing and golf. His wife, Marlyn, died in 2009. Survivors include four daughters: Nanette Weers, Jamie Yemm, Sara O’Brien, and Wendy Kolbus.

Carolyn Slack Walker, Nov. 5, 2013. At CC, she was a member of Gamma Phi Beta. She volunteered for 60 years at St. Luke’s Hospital in Denver. She was the only woman to have been elected to two terms as the international president of the Sigmas of Sigma Chi, the women’s auxiliary to the Sigma Chi fraternity. Survivors include her husband, Emory; and two daughters, Nancy Walker and Judy Green. Preceding her in death were her parents, Hermina ’21 and Arthur Walker ’17; a brother, Arthur Slack Jr. ’43; an aunt, Celestine Greene ’19; and a cousin, Laurence Greene Jr. ’45.

Robert Bustin, July 27, 2013, in Grand Forks, N.D. His career in advertising and broadcasting included a stint with CBS television in New York City. Survivors include his wife, Ruth.

Marilyn Swan Heinly, July 15, 2013, in Mount Pleasant, S.C. She and her husband, Henry, who survives, had five children, 25 grandchildren, and 15 great-grandchildren.

Daryl Weston Davis, Aug. 7, 2013. Survivors include his wife, Jeanne.

Barbara Algoren Roby, Sept. 28, 2013, in Oklahoma City. She worked as an administrative assistant in the Oklahoma State House of Representatives and Senate. She loved traveling, making new friends, and playing bridge and mahjong. Survivors include her husband, Bill; and her children, Scott Stober and Janet Stober-Beck. Her first husband, Edward Stober, died in 1973.

Helen Morgan Culpepper, July 25, 2013, in Farmington, N.M. She earned a master’s degree in counseling and worked for Tohatchi Middle School in Tohatchi, N.M. She is survived by her husband, Richard; daughters Maribeth, Rickisue, and Josie Culpepper; and a son, Dwayne.

Florence “Dawn” Irving Smith, July 14, 2013. She was preceded in death by her husband, M.C. Smith. Two sons, Mark and Dean Smith, survive.

1958

George Lawrence “Larry” Bale, Sept. 2, 2013, in Casper, Wyo., from cancer at age 77. He worked in the oil, gas, and minerals industry, and he and his wife, Rita, owned rental properties. He liked to ski and was an award-winning carver of birds and waterfowl.

1959

Cyril E. Whiteside, Jan. 7, 2014, in Woodland Park, Colo. He served as hockey team captain for the 1958-59 season and played professional hockey in Scotland and for various International Hockey League franchises. Survivors include his wife, Menke; children Robert, Ella, and Cherylanne; and a cousin, Denne McHale ’59.

John Mumby Sangster, Nov. 2, 2013, on Lopez Island, Wash. He was a member of the Barnes Society and worked as a business consultant and in the family business, Lloyd Plywood Co. He and his wife of 55 years, Patsy Lloyd Sangster, had three children: Johnny, James Sangster ’83 and Annie Sangster Carrino ’84. He enjoyed golf, tennis, birding, boat racing, and writing poetry.

1961

Donald Lewis Ullman, Oct. 2, 2013, in Peoria, Ill. He met his future wife, Marilyn Lipman ’64, while at CC. Don served as a first lieutenant in the Army in Germany and spent 40 years building the family business, Federal Warehouse. He is remembered as a generous, selfless man with a wonderful sense of humor. Survivors include his wife and two children, Justin Ullman and Suzanne Griffin.

1963

Margaret Ann “Susie” Covode, Oct. 26, 2013, at age 72, in Charlotte, N.C. She graduated from CC with a bachelor’s degree in philosophy and was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta. After obtaining master’s degrees in psychology and education, she worked for the Charlotte Mecklenburg School System. Survivors include three daughters: Anna Stull, Sally Bingham, and Molly; and a nephew, William Covode ’83.

Nancy Jo Rockwell, Dec. 15, 2013. She also attended the Kansas City Art Institute and loved creating beautiful things.

Stephanie Gwynn Row, Dec. 1, 2013. She earned a master of library science at the University of Denver and had worked at the San Francisco Public Library.

William Robertson Oakes, May 11, 2013. He worked at Los Alamos National Laboratory until his retirement. Survivors include his wife, Maureen; and sons Scott and Gregory Oakes.

Judy Hendrick McBride, Jan. 1, 2013, in San Marcos, Texas. She was 69. Judy was a kind, gentle person who was a hard worker and always helpful. She worked for her husband’s orthodontics practice. Survivors include her husband, Richard; and two children, Jamie Steans and Douglas McBride.

1966

William W. “Bill” Owens, Sept. 24, 2013, in Centerville, Iowa. He earned a master’s degree in chemistry from CC. He taught and coached sports in high schools, was active with Little League, and was a part-time sportscaster. He is survived by his wife, Marlene; and two sons, John and Doug.

Frank M. Bond, Dec. 25, 2013, at age 70 in Santa Fe, N.M. He was a lawyer and a former member of the New Mexico Legislature. He was known for his battle during the 1970s to save the peregrine falcon, a passion that grew out of his exposure to falconry while studying Spanish at CC. He is survived by his children, Sara and Franklin.

Mansi McClure Kern, Aug. 5, 2013, in Tesuque, N.M. She was 89, and had been a popular musician and dancer throughout the country. Survivors include a son, Shawn Valdemar Sigstedt ’83.

Barbara Walton Weldon, Nov. 9, 2013, at age 66, in Morgantown, W.Va. Survivors include her husband, Arthur, her high school classmate. She worked in the banking industry and supported the arts and culture, traveling to Italy 15 times.

1973

Ruth Wilhemina Dreblow Sawyer, Sept. 1, 2013. She worked on her father’s pecan plantation in Florida and sold “Dad’s Quality Syrup.” She joined the Civil Service, married Lt. Col. Tom Sawyer and was a member of the officers’ wives club, the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Delta Kappa Gamma sorority. She earned her liberal arts and education degrees from CC and taught at Pikes Peak Elementary School.

Craig Campbell, Feb. 16, 2014, in Seattle; he had Merkel cell carcinoma, a rare and aggressive skin cancer. Craig married his partner, Brian Brock, in November and they honeymooned in Hawaii. In October, he celebrated his 45th reunion on his beloved CC campus, where his bright personality and loyal generosity will be missed.

1976

Robert James Neuberger, Nov. 30, 2013. A longtime Portland, Ore., attorney, he died after a four-year battle with cancer. He had been a member of the 1874 Society. Survivors include a son, Stuart Neuberger.

Stephen Curtiss Collett, Oct. 27, 2013, in Hermosa Beach, Calif., from complications related to pneumonia. He was 59. He was a certified public accountant and president of Collett & Co. He was known for his great intellect, giving amazing parties, walking his Great Pyrenees dogs, and involvement in the Libertarian Party. He ran for Congress in 2012. Survivors include his daughter, Jillian Liota; his twin brother, James; and two sisters.

1982

Cheri-Babette Comer Corso, Sept. 17, 2013, in Charlotte, N.C., of cancer. She was 53. The Colorado Springs native received her degree from CC in political science. She married Joseph Corso at the Air Force Academy in 1980 and traveled the world. In addition to the United States, the family resided in England, South Korea, and Thailand. She lived her life with beauty and grace. Her husband and five children, Maria, Michelle, Kirstie, Kelley, and Joey Corso, survive.

FRIENDS

Christopher J. Morris, 33, husband of Angela LaBorde Morris ’04, died Sept. 20, 2013, in Green Mountain Falls, Colo. A loving husband, son, grandson and friend, he will be remembered for his sense of humor and love for his family. He enjoyed playing the trombone and taking photographs. He loved camping, hiking, and snowboarding and was an Eagle Scout.

Helen Harper Nelsen, Sept. 25, 2013. She was a member of the Legacy Society, including Barnes. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Mair Nelsen ’40.

The Rev. Charles A. Taylor Jr., of Birmingham, Ala., husband of the Rev. Margaret Romero Taylor ’67, died Feb. 26, 2013.

Eric M. Johnson, father of Ashley Alexandra Johnson ’15, died June 29, 2013.

Timothy Kunkel, father of Caden M. Kunkel ’17, died April 15, 2013. His wife, Kim, also survives.

Michael C. Schuller, father of Casey Waters Schuller ’16, died March 16, 2013. He also is survived by his wife, Candace Schuller.

Sarah J. Snyderman, an 1874 Society member and mother of Reed Meyer Snyderman ’13, died June 8, 2013. She is also survived by her husband, Mark.

James E. Duncan, a member of the 1874 Society and husband of CC Trustee Susan Schlessman Duncan ’52, died Sept. 19, 2013. Survivors also include a stepson, Michael Fredericks ’76.

Louise D. Pittaway, wife of Robert Alexander Pittaway ’63, died May 26, 2013.
