While camping in Yosemite National Park this summer, Pete Bansen ’78 was delighted to discover that their campground neighbor was noted big-wall climber Madaleine Sorkin ’04. Pete and his wife, Cindy Porter Bansen, have been married for 25 years and have two children who are students at the University of California at Santa Cruz and UC at Davis. The Bansens live in Truckee, Calif., and he has been the chief of the Squaw Valley Fire Department for 21 years. Madaleine is based in Boulder, Colo., and works as a professional rock climber. She earned a master’s degree in Land Use and Environmental Planning in 2012 but spends most of her time traveling and climbing. She is a climber steward in Yosemite, engaged in environmental stewardship work while having more time in one of her favorite places to climb.
