1931 – Evelyn “Chicky” Jones Payne, April 26, in Ignacio, Colo. She was 100. Chicky attended a one-room schoolhouse as a child and studied education at CC. Survivors include a daughter, Glenda Hocker; and a son, Jackson.

1936 – David Kimball Cochrane, April 25, in Walnut Creek, Calif. He had a 38-year career as an aeronautical engineer for Boeing and designed military and commercial aircraft. He was predeceased by his wife, Mary. His brother, John, was a 1935 CC graduate. Survivors include children Daniel, Michael, Judith, and Linda.

1937 – Richard Clark Rodgers, March 14. He retired to Tucson in 1983 after a career as an Episcopal priest in Nebraska, Oklahoma, and Texas. Survivors include his wife of 70 years, Lillian; and children, Richard, Stephen, Greg, and Mary.

1940 – John Lloyd Waugh, May 24. Survivors include his wife, Shirley Emberson Waugh ’42; a son, John; and granddaughter Katherine Waugh ’01.

1941 – Beatrice Annette Palmer, June 25.

1942 – Eva Hodges Watt, Oct. 3, in Denver. She was 90. After graduating from CC, Eva worked for The Denver Post until her retirement in 1985. Among people she interviewed were Mamie Eisenhower, Clark Gable, Cary Grant, Billy Graham, and Bill Blass. Eva was an active volunteer for CC in Denver. Survivors include her two sons, Rob and Joe. Her husband, Tom, a newspaper editor and television news director, predeceased her.

1942 – Phillip W. Bissell, May 8, in Broomfield, Colo. He was 92. At CC he was a member of the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity, Koshare, freshman track, and the 21 Club. He served as a captain in the U.S. Army during World War II and worked for Thompson Pipe and Steel Co. in Denver for 36 years. Survivors include his wife of 69 years, Mary Alice Gibbs Bissell ’42; two sons, Phillip Jr. and Charles; and a daughter, Carol Cabildo.

1942 – Wallace L. Rosander, May 17, at age 92. He attended CC on a football scholarship and had a 41-year career as an engineer with the Denver Rio Grande Railroad. He also owned Rosander’s Wood Turning Shop and was active in the LDS Church. Survivors include his wife, Vonda; and two children, four step-children, 24 grandchildren and 51 great-grandchildren.

1943 – Mary Haney Lochridge, Aug. 15, in Colorado Springs, Colo. She earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology and a master’s in education from CC and taught English and history at junior high schools. She was a member of a touring dance troupe, sang as a USO singer, and performed in civic theater. Her husband, John, predeceased her, as did a brother, John Haney ’33; a brother, James Haney ’39; a sister-in-law, Gratia Belle Haney ’34; and a nephew, Jeremy Hillhouse ’62. Survivors include children, Bruce, Michael, and Chris Carter; a nephew, John ’62, a nephew, Jeffrey ’76; and sister-in-law Julie Hutchinson Haney ’39.

1943 – John Louis Chapman, May 9, in Grand Junction, Colo. He and his wife, Barbara Donaghy Chapman ’43, met at CC, had three children, and were married for 66 years. A chemical engineer, John worked as a mining consultant, prospector, and processor.

1943 – Suzanne Carrithers Flynn, May 28. Survivors include her children: Susan Park, Jessica Vogelien, Catherine Sharafanowich, Jonathan Flynn, and Caroline Robinson.

1943 – Dona Lawhead Boyden, Sept. 5, in Albuquerque, N.M. She was 91. A woman of elegance and grace, she competed on the tennis court, golf course, and ski hill. She met her husband, George, on a mistaken blind date while at CC and married following graduation. A devoted sister of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority, she also was a member of the Tuesday Literary Club. Her husband predeceased her. Survivors include her children, George, Thomas, Barbara, and Ann.

1944 – Joan Eames Siegfriedt, Sept. 17, in Louisville, Colo., after a 13-year battle with Alzheimer’s. She graduated magna cum laude in business from CC and was a member of the Phi Beta Kappa honor society. Her business skills served her in many volunteer capacities, including church and Christian ministry, Girl Scouts, Meals on Wheels, and hospice. Survivors include her husband of 64 years, Edgar; three children, Sarajane, William, and Katharine Siegfriedt-Wilson ’77; and a sister, Joy Coe ’46.

1946 – Elizabeth “Betty” Van Valkenburgh Lindeman, June 12, in Colorado Springs, Colo. She was 88. She was a member of Gamma Gamma Phi Beta sorority and the science honorary Delta Epsilon. She also was president and a life member of the Woman’s Educational Society. Recent hearing loss and heart problems did not detract from her wit, humor, friendliness, and generosity. Betty’s husband, George Lindeman ’44, predeceased her. Survivors include children Ted Lindeman ’73, Paula, Carl, and Bill; a sister, Paula ’44; and a grandson, Ian Lindeman ’06.

1946 – Richard Oliver Walberg, June 22, in Boulder, Colo., of cancer. He was 88. A former editor for The Denver Post and a D-Day veteran, Richard is survived by his wife of 56 years, Sonya; three children; a sister, Helen Gilbert ’42; and a niece, Margaret Handke ’69. He was predeceased by a sister, Lorimer Schaefer ’39; a brother, John; a sister, Lillian Handke ’34; a brother-in-law, Fred Handke ’34; and a niece, Christine Handke ’74.

1946 – Joanne S. Freund, Sept. 16, in Dunwoody, Ga. She was 87. Survivors include her daughters, Beth Arenburg and Barbara Waters; and a stepson, Gene. Her husband, William, predeceased her.

1947 – Marian Scofield Barnett, June 19, in Omaha, Neb., at age 86. An accomplished organist, choir director, and piano teacher, she worked for several churches. Survivors include her husband, James, and four sons.

1948 – Margaret Gavin Chapman, April 19, in The Villages, Fla., at age 86. She owned a retail store, LeJon, in Dallas, Texas, for 34 years. She lived in eight states: Colorado, New Mexico, Georgia, Florida, Ohio, Minnesota, Oklahoma, and Texas. Survivors include her husband of 66 years, Edward Chapman ’48. Other survivors are their children, Susan, Lorrie, Kyle, and John Thomas.

1948 – Carle Elmer Stenmark, June 26. Survivors include a daughter, Suzanne Stenmark White ’77.

1948 – Helen Isaac McCullough, May 29. Survivors include a daughter, Linda McCullough Vandezande ’70. She was predeceased by her husband, Jack McCullough ’48.

1949 – N. Duane Grisham, May 12, in Bonita Springs, Fla. A U.S. Navy veteran, he loved the outdoors and spent his career as an executive in the shoe industry. Among survivors are his wife of 61 years, Doris; and two children, Bill and Pam Bonfield.

1949 – John Armand Jerman, June 2. Survivors include a son, Steve. He was predeceased by his wife, Thelma.

1950 – Harold “Hal” Beile, June 14, Godfrey, Ill. Survivors include his wife, Betty Lamb Beile ’53; son Richard Lamb Beile ’84; and daughter-in-law Donia Ness Biele ’81. His wife (whom he met at CC) and their five sons were with him during his final days. Hal was an outstanding student and athlete, was active in various organizations at CC (Sigma Chi, Red Lantern) and extended his major in business administration to pursue a professional career as a CPA in various contexts. He was an inveterate golfer, in his later years playing more than 200 rounds a year, often shooting his age and on more than a few occasions scoring holes-in-one.

1950 – Patricia Kahn Jeydel, July 21.

1950 – Georgia Brady Cullman, May 7, in Ferndale, Wash., at age 88. A gardener, artist, traveler, and cook, survivors include her husband, Paul Cullman ’50; and children, Daniel Cullman ’69, Candice, Steven, and Laurel Lindner; also Katherine Cullman Hedges ’75.

1952 – Barbara Prechtel Wehrle, Aug. 4, in Denver, from pancreatic cancer. She was 81. She was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma and active in many clubs at CC. She was president of the Association of Women Students and president of her dorm. She was a member of the Assistance League of Colorado Springs and Denver, a volunteer at Swedish Hospital and a Kappa Kappa Gamma Alumnae member. Survivors include her husband of 59 years, Fred; a son, Paul Wehrle ’77; and a daughter, Pati.

1952 – Jentra Jarvis Barker, May 5, in Durango, Colo. She attended CC for two years, and for 30 years ran the Strater Hotel with her husband, the late Earl Barker Jr. An accomplished horsewoman who rode until she was 80, she is survived by a son, Roderick; and a daughter, Jeannie Wheeldon.

1952 – Bill MacDonald, July 27, in Colorado Springs, Colo.,
at age 82. He played on the first CC NCAA championship hockey team and was instrumental in helping CC skate to the first of two national championships. In 1998, he and the entire team were inducted into CC’s Athletics Hall of Fame. After serving in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War, Bill taught in the Cheyenne Mountain School District for more than 50 years. Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Martha; and sons Timothy, Thomas, and Terrance. A daughter Mary Regan, predeceased him.

1953 – William D. Hanson, Sept. 15, in Binghamton, N.Y. He was 84. A Marine Corps veteran, Bill had a successful career as an engineer and manager and retired from Link Flight Simulation in 1989. Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Phyllis, and children Thomas, Dean, Judith, and Bruce.

1953 – Patricia Pierce Gell, Jan. 25. Survivors include her husband, George.

1953 – Judith Roddewig Bissell, May 14. She and her husband, Cushman, raised four children, Dianne, Brad, Jennifer, and Julie, in the Chicago area. She volunteered for many organizations.

1953 – Helene Greene Follmer, April 25, in Las Vegas, at age 81. She was a member of the Kappa Alpha Theta Sorority. One of the original cornerstones of the Southern Nevada Art community and the Lied Discovery Children’s Museum, she was predeceased by her husband, Dr. Hugh Follmer.

1953 – Robert Samuel Klipping, April 23, 2012, in Colorado Springs, Colo. He received a degree in geology from CC and worked as a successful geophysicist for more than
60 years, including owning a consulting and exploration company. He is survived by his wife, Gayle Swanson Klipping; and three daughters, Barbara Schwartz, Sharon, and Joan.

1955 – Marilynn Kirtland Doerfler, June 6.

1956 – Douglas Lawrence Swail, May, in Portland, Ore. At CC he served as president of his fraternity, Phi Gamma Delta, and was a football halfback.

1956 – Alice Glynn Phibbs. A romance languages major, she was a member of Gamma Phi Beta women’s sorority and on the swimming and diving team.

1956 – Patricia Saam Cousins, April 8, in Winnetka, Ill., of cancer. She was 77 and enjoyed traveling, tennis, and bridge. She was predeceased by her husband, Solon. Survivors include four sons, Jay, Grayland, Joe, and Rob; and nine grandchildren.

1957 – Alice Crabtree Rowe, April 18, in Jacksonville, Ill. She was 76. She was a member of the Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority. A Presbyterian deacon, she earned a degree in special education from MacMurray College and volunteered with many organizations. Her husband, Harris, and four daughters, survive.

1958 – Marilyn Pauley Huenink, March 24, in Tucson, Ariz., following complications from pneumonia. She was 75. She transferred to CC from the University of Oklahoma. She graduated from CC’s education program and was known for her artistic flair. She was predeceased by her first husband, Dirk Huenink ’59. She is survived by her husband of nine years, Charles Powers; sons Dirk Jr. and Mark; a daughter, Jan Ebbott; and a sister-in-law, Julia Huenink Baer ’64.

1958 – Medville “Med” Banks, July 20, in Sparks, Nev.
He attended CC for two years before enlisting in the Navy, then worked for Village Inn and Woodford.

1962 – Kristen Theresa Hoof, Jan. 19.

1963 – Robert Carmichael Foster, June 2. Survivors include his wife, Phyllis; and children Brian, Robert, and Quinn.

1965 – Steve Sabol, Sept. 18, in Moorestown, N.J., from brain cancer. He was 69. Steve was named All-Rocky Mountain Conference fullback and known as the “Little Tot from Possum Trot.” He was a member of Kappa Sigma fraternity. An art history major, Steve went on to work with his father, Ed, founder of NFL Films, which produces the official color films of NFL championship games and created such innovations as slow-motion replays. Steve became president of NFL Films and won 35 Emmys for writing, cinematography, editing, directing, and producing, along with a Lifetime Achievement Emmy in 2003, with his father. He also received the Pete Rozelle Award and the Dan Reeves Pioneer Award for his contributions to pro football. Survivors include his wife, Penny, a son, Casey; and his parents, Audrey and Ed.

1965 – Jonathan Depuy Freer, April 24, in Colorado Springs, Colo., of Parkinson’s Disease. He was 68. He participated in Navy R.O.T.C. at CC and after graduation was commissioned as an officer, serving during the Vietnam War. He worked for 30 years in commercial printing and loved bird watching, hiking, fishing, and skiing. Survivors include his wife, Janet; stepsons Chris and Jay; a brother, Jay Freer ’64; and cousins Dr. Margot Devita’72, and Jennifer Callaway ’67.

1966 – Ruth Dial Talbert, Sept. 10, in Colorado Springs, Colo. She had three careers that she loved — working for American Airlines, Mountain Bell, and several schools as a teacher — after earning her teaching certificate from CC in 1956 and a master’s degree in elementary education in 1966. She retired from teaching in 1983 and became a volunteer. She also offered sanctuary to 19 animals in her Ivywild home, where she lived for 50 years. Survivors include her daughter, Rebecca Lovett; and sons James and Jon.

1967 – Stephen Fredrick Felbert, April 15, in Pasadena, Calif. He served in the Army Security Agency, and worked for the Chaffey High School District. His wife of 44 years, Lani; and a son, Chad, survive.

1968 – Robert Peck, June 23, in Bradenton, Fla. A retired U.S. Air Force Reserve lieutenant colonel, Robert owned a retail garden and nursery. He worked for National Western Life Insurance before teaching history at Wasson High School. He earned his master’s in education from CC. Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Miriam; their daughters, Barbara, Joanne, and Nancy; and son, Ronald.

1969 – Stephen H. Stockmar, May 18, in Scoi, Ore. Survivors include his wife, Diane Hunt Stockmar ’71.

1970 – Harry M. “Pete” Smith, Aug. 24, in Colorado Springs, Colo. He received his master’s degree from CC, after being commissioned into the U.S. Army in World War II and earning two Silver Stars and three Bronze Stars for valor during combat in France, Germany, Austria, and Czechoslovakia. He also worked in military security at the White House. He taught at two high schools for 24 years and traveled with his wife, June Sprau.

1971 – Katrina Skarda Green, May 29, 2012, in Clovis, N.M. She was 62. She majored in art education at CC and for 30 years taught art at Doherty High School in Colorado Springs. An avid photographer, she loved telling jokes and singing. Survivors include her husband, Charles; a son, Dr. Evan Green; two daughters, Katlin and Hannah; and a stepson, Christopher.

1975 – Susan Mary Hayward, Sept. 2, 2012, in Colorado Springs, Colo., at age 59. She graduated from CC magna cum laude and was accomplished in sales, music, and theater. In her comedy business, Haywire Productions, she performed skits, parodies, and one-woman shows and starred in melodramas and vaudeville olios. She founded Discover Your Talent, where she taught many to play the piano. Survivors include her mother, Mary.

1977 – John Gilford Wilcox, June 13, in Denison, Texas. He earned a bachelor of fine arts from CC. Commissioned pieces for CC’s Packard Hall of Art and Music started his long career as an artist working in acrylics, oils, and other mediums. His work is shown nationally, and he was known for a creative spirit and devotion to art and friends.

1977 – Stephen E. Murray, April 12, in Colorado Springs, Colo. He earned a master’s degree in education from CC and had a teaching career of 33 years at elementary schools in District 11. Known as a kind, thoughtful, and generous man, he also was a teacher who made a difference in the lives of his students. His wife, Laura Biddle Murray; and a daughter, Meredith, predeceased him. His youngest daughter, Allison Guthrie, survives.

1981 – William Scott Pistor, April 20, 2012. He will be remembered for his kindness, generosity, sense of humor, and love of nature and animals. Survivors include his former wife, Katherine Anne Luening-Culbert ’82; and his wife, Heather Hill of Bethesda, Md.

1981 – Rodrigo Magallanes Jr., Sept. 7, in Santa Clara, Calif., of cancer. He was 53. After receiving a bachelor’s degree in physics from CC he worked as an electrical engineer until the week before he died and loved concerts, tutoring music, and performing, recently with a jazz band. His wife, Rowena Reyes; two children, Jessica and Kendrick; a brother, Saul ’81; and a sister, Sarah ’86 survive.

1985 – Judith “Judy” Curtiss Jackson, April 22, in an automobile accident outside Amarillo, Texas. She was 49. She was an owner and partner of Kati Sportcap in Houston and enjoyed nature and wildlife.

1992 – Janet Hicks Russell, June 12, in Denver, of cancer. She was 42. Janet earned a degree in economics from CC and worked for the Routt Schools Federal Credit Union for the past 19 years. She enjoyed traveling. Survivors include her husband, John; and children Rylan and Sloan.

1995 – Merritt Miller Kazda, Sept. 2, in Fort Worth, Texas, of a brain tumor. She was 39. She received a bachelor’s degree in history from CC and met her husband, Mike Kazda ’94 at CC as well. She worked as a physical therapist for children with disabilities and will be remembered for her infectious laugh, quick wit, and generosity. Survivors include her husband and son, Sam.

2007 – Blanton Lee McGee, Aug. 26, in Boise, Idaho. He was 27. A cultural anthropology major, Blanton was a member of the Kappa Sigma fraternity, a two-year letterman and starter in football and active in the International Club at CC. An avid fly fisherman, hunter, skier, cyclist, and sports enthusiast, he also was an Eagle Scout and world traveler. Survivors include his parents, David and Judy McGee; and a brother, Jonathan McGee ’04.

2007 – Jennifer Marie Camp, June 4, in Colorado Springs, Colo. She was 27. She graduated from CC with a bachelor’s degree in studio art and received a master’s in counseling and art therapy from Southwestern College in Santa Fe earlier this year. She recently started a private practice and was active in 4-H. She was known for being talented, gentle, and giving. Survivors include her parents, Gay-Leigh and Denis Camp.

2014 – CC junior Reuben Eli Mitrani of Harrisburg, Penn., suffered a brain hemorrhage while studying international relations and multilateral diplomacy in Geneva, Switzerland, and died on Sept. 23, 2012. He was 20. An active member of the Jewish community and the CC club baseball team, Reuben also enjoyed snowboarding. A scholar of philosophy, religion, and political science at CC, he also worked as an intramural sports supervisor. Reuben traveled to Greece earlier this year to trace Odysseus’s journey as described in Homer’s epic poem. Survivors include his parents, Donna Orbach and Albert Mitrani; and a brother, Adam.
