Cossitt Mural Honors Dance Instructor Hanya Holm

A new mural, installed in Spring 2013 in Cossitt Hall, pays tribute to the contributions of legendary dance artist and instructor Hanya Holm. For 43 summers, beginning in 1941, Holm conducted a summer course in dance at CC, mostly taught in Cossitt Gymnasium. Holm, a native of Germany, was a leading dance artist of the time and was one of four principal teachers at a summer dance school at Bennington College before starting the Hanya Holm-Colorado College Summer School of the Dance. New Faces at the Career Center

Megan Nicklaus, Career Center director, comes from Vanderbilt University, where she served as the associate director of the Center for Student Professional Development. As the associate director, she oversaw the shift from an advising approach to coaching, and moved the center from traditional “career search mechanics” to broader “professional development opportunities.” She also served as assistant director for career education at Vanderbilt University for three years, and as a career adviser there for four years. She has a B.S. in biology with minors in psychology and Spanish, and a master of arts degree in student affairs in higher education. Jason Owens ’06, is associate director of employer relations. CC Adds New Major

Students at Colorado College can now major in education, a change that recognizes shifts in society and educational norms. The new major at CC was recently profiled in Inside Higher Ed. Before the major was approved, the focus of the department was on the master of arts in teaching, which is still an important emphasis of the department. The new education major places the study of education within the liberal arts, and recognizes education as a discipline with historical, social, political, and economic aspects. The major is a shift for the department, which had previously offered a thematic minor in education to undergraduates. “The Big Idea” Kicks Off

The Big Idea revs up this year with more resources, mentors, and a new director to continue to build on last year’s success. The program focuses on innovation and entrepreneurship at Colorado College, one of the elements of CC’s new strategic plan. Patrick Bultema, the new executive director of The Big Idea, plans to host regular meetings and bring guest speakers and presentations to campus throughout the year.
