Rocks and Rain – and the Aftermath

The September deluge that caused so much damage in Colorado, washing out roads and homes and triggering mudslides, spanned almost 200 miles and affected 17 counties. The heavy rain along Colorado’s Front Range hit Boulder County the hardest, but Colorado Springs, on the southern end of the system, also felt the effects of the downpour.…

From the President

Dear Alumni, Parents, and Friends of Colorado College, The Year of Planning has been nothing short of exhilarating! Thanks to the input from students, faculty, trustees, staff, alumni, parents, and local community leaders, Colorado College is well on the way to establishing a bold plan that will guide us for the next decade. In reflecting on this process, so many memorable moments, representative of the wide array of people invested in creating this plan, come to mind. A parent at the Homecoming Town Hall passionately describing the special “biorhythm” of CC. A group of current students imagining the technology expectations of tomorrow’s students.  Alumni, spanning decades and gathered in one…

In Memoriam: Faculty

James Alan “Al” Johnson ’56, a well-regarded economics professor and debate coach who brought order to the chaos of registration in the early days of the Block Plan, was honored on April 6, in a memorial service in Shove Chapel. He died Dec. 28, 2012, at age 82 after a brief illness. Johnson is remembered by former students and colleagues for his attentiveness and care and his vast service to the college. “He listened to us, every day, as equals,” said Amy Weible Nitta ’99, a debater and Boettcher scholar who went on to get a master’s degree in speech language pathology. “I feel like he really played a big…

Alumni Association Update

This is the last time I will write in the Bulletin as president of the Alumni Association Board. It has been an honor and pleasure to serve. Chris Schluter ’65 will take over on July 1, 2013, and lead AAB in exciting times as CC establishes itself as the premier liberal arts institution for engaged teaching and learning. During my term as president I have seen many changes and developments at CC: a new president, Jill Tiefenthaler; strategic planning and deep thinking about possible innovations to the Block Plan; a revamped and vibrant Career Center benefitting students and alumni; the new Adam F. Press ’84 Fitness Center; a new vice…

Peak Profile: Raymond Dean Jones ’67

Raymond Dean Jones ’67 was a sophomore at Colorado College when he walked in the Selma-to-Montgomery civil rights marches. He came back a changed man. “The first thing that struck me was the violence of the whites toward the blacks,” the Pueblo native said. “I had no idea how deeply people can hate other people. I also did not realize the courage of the black people of the South to stand up to that. I know I have no courage compared with those people and not just the leaders. It took everything I could to not fight back after being spat on.” His professors urged the African-American to channel his…

Peak Profile: Lindsay Patterson ’06

Lindsay Patterson ‘06 tells good stories. In 2011, after years of experience writing and editing, the former creative writing major took her love of learning about people and the stories that make them unique and decided to make a career of it. The path between her time at CC and her decision to launch the business Reflect & Record seems to have formed organically. At CC, Lindsay immersed herself in the college’s writing community. Serving as the prose editor of The Leviathan and as an editor for The Cipher, she was deeply involved in on-campus publications. She credits her work at The Cipher with setting the course of her life…
