Don’t Be Afraid

by Steven Hayward, CC English professor “Don’t be Afraid” is a darkly comic novel of adolescent anxiety featuring Jim Morrison — not the lead singer of The Doors who died in 1971, but a chubby 17-year-old living in Ohio. This Jim Morrison was born days after the singer’s death, and Jimmy has been living a largely invisible life, overshadowed by his older brother and stern father. When the brother dies, the family’s life is upended and any sense of normalcy is destroyed. Hayward collaborated with Brad Limov ’12 in the making of a video trailer, marking the fact the book is now available in paperback. ISBN-13: 978-0676977363. Published by Knopf Canada, 2011.…

Peak Profile: David Amster-Olszewski ’09

David Amster-Olszewski ’09 didn’t grow up thinking about solar energy, but during his four years at Colorado College, it became the thing that excited him the most. Amster-Olszewski grew up in Florida, and when it was time to choose a college he decided on CC, even though he had been accepted by several in the northeast. He was planning on a career in business and finance, following other family members who worked in investment  and real estate. But while he was studying at CC, Amster-Olszewski says he “began connecting the dots. I grew up loving the environment, but not understanding the connection between the things I was doing — the…

Peak Profile: Dorothy Budd ’80

The start of a life focused on social justice for Colorado College graduate Dorothy Budd ’80 began with lessons learned in philosophy professor John Riker’s ethics courses. “I’d always had an interest,” Budd said from her home in Dallas. “It really was sparked by Dr. Riker’s classes.” That desire manifested itself while studying law at the University of Texas at Austin. She interned as a juvenile defender and realized she could make an impact working on cases involving children. That experience led to jobs as a defense lawyer and child sex crimes prosecutor in Dallas. Budd is also a founding member of the UT Center for Women in Law. She…

Scholarship Honors Oliver Wood ’97, Brings CC Experience to New Student

For Oliver Wood ‘97, his Colorado College experience has extended beyond his lifetime. Nearly 15 years ago, while he and his buddies were sitting on the roof of their off-campus digs soaking up some winter sun, none would’ve dreamed what their lives would bring. Rather than living a long life, and becoming one of Colorado College’s donors himself, Oliver lost his life to cancer in 2008. However, his dear friends from the Class of ‘97, Dan Haas and Rick Jacobs, turned this tragedy into a blessing for another CC student, Elyse Miller ‘13 — the inaugural recipient of the Oliver Ellsworth Wood, III, Class of ‘97, Endowed Scholarship. Elyse will…

Peak Profile: Charles Richardson ‘68

A fascination with music began at an early age for Charles Richardson ’68, a lifelong recording engineer. The seven-year-old liked to play on the parade grounds behind his home at the U.S. Naval Academy where his father, who eventually became an admiral, was stationed. Richardson would haul out his record player and play “The Star Spangled Banner.” Under academy regulations, everyone in uniform had to stop what they were doing, turn to the nearest American flag, and salute for the duration of the national anthem. Richardson would repeat the record for as long as he was able, in what he considered his backyard. Needless to say, the officers and cadets…
