Peak Profile: Betty Sowers Alt ’60

Betty Sowers Alt is not your typical 70-something grandmother. This one’s got murder on her mind. The 1960 CC graduate, who lives near Pueblo, Colo., with her husband, Bill ’63, is working on her seventh book with Sandra Wells, a former chief investigator with the district attorney’s office in Pueblo. “I’ll write on anything they’ll pay me for or that will bring in money,” Alt said. “It’s fun, but we like to make money.” Their titles include: “Mountain Mafia,” “Mountain Murders,” and “When Caregivers Kill.” Alt said the latter “is not a nice book to read. But it’s a necessary book.” Alt’s other books include “Black Soldiers, White Wars” written…

Peak Profile: Mark Fiore '91

Mark Fiore is living his dream. But even in his wildest dreams, he didn’t expect to win a Pulitzer Prize. The 1991 CC graduate made history when, in April 2010, he became the first online-only editorial cartoonist to win journalism’s greatest accolade. His animated cartoons boosted him to a pantheon including Berke Breathed, Jeff MacNelly, Garry Trudeau, and Bill Mauldin. “To be in that company is a huge honor,” he said by phone while traveling from his California home. After hearing of his win — and jumping up and down while yelling — Fiore and his wife, Chelsea, “hit the ground running.” He hadn’t let himself think too much about…

CC Shoes Sent Walking Worldwide

The Colorado College community donated enough shoes at the end of the 2009-10 academic year to fill 22 boxes for Soles4Souls. The campus-wide project was launched in conjunction with a children’s book, “New Old Shoes,” published by Charlotte Blessing, CC’s director of international programs. The shoe drive was a resounding success, as many faculty, staff, and students stepped up and donated their old shoes. From the President

Dear Alumni, Parents, and Friends of Colorado College, Over the past few years, “a unique intellectual adventure” has become the descriptor for the Colorado College experience. What does that really mean? In his article about creating a safe place for dissent in the classroom, Professor John Gould writes, “As they progress through their majors and travel across disciplines, students engage a diversity of ideological viewpoints and analytical modes of inquiry. By the time they graduate, they are much better able to identify and defend where they stand.  But most importantly, CC students learn that open inquiry does not stop with a diploma, it’s a lifelong engagement.” That characterizes a central…
