Prepare for High Wind Warning

The Colorado College campus will be under a high wind warning starting today, Dec. 1, at 8 p.m., with hazardous conditions possible from 2 a.m. Friday, Dec. 2 until Friday afternoon. Campus may experience wind gusts up to 75 mph with isolated gusts to 100 mph possible.

Before the storm moves in:

  • Make sure your windows are closed and locked to prevent damage.
  • Secure exterior furniture, flags, or light weight items to prevent injury.

Damaging winds may blow down trees and power lines. Our Incident Management Team is monitoring the conditions and will make an announcement on limited-service operations in the morning if needed.

In the event the college moves to limited-service operations, the campus community will receive notification from the RAVE emergency messaging system via email, text, and voice messages. Employees should consider their safety in determining when, or if, to report to work and communicate their availability to their supervisors. View the Severe Weather Policy.

With high winds predicted, if you see or experience unsafe conditions on campus alert Facilities Services of the issue as soon as possible: Before 5 p.m. at (719) 389-6981; after 5 p.m. contact Campus Safety at (719) 389-6911.

Lunch served immediately after workshop, noon-1:30 p.m.

In this interactive session, Susan D. Blum introduces some of the principles behind the growing practices united under the umbrella of ungrading — calling into question the centrality of conventional grading practices. She’ll also talk about many concrete practices that she and others use to implement ungrading — leading to greater learning, engagement, and equity. Participants will have a chance to raise questions and think about their own teaching practices.
RSVP:
If you are interested in this workshop, please complete this form by Wednesday, Dec. 21. The workshop will be recorded, and the recording will be available to those who indicate their interest on the form. You can also indicate you would like a free book even if you cannot attend the workshop, but plan to watch a recording of the workshop.
Workshop Facilitator
Susan D. Blum is a professor of anthropology at the University of Notre Dame, currently fixated on education and pedagogical praxis, after a previous incarnation as a China anthropologist. She is the author of “‘I Love Learning; I Hate School:’ An Anthropology of College (Cornell, 2016) and “My Word! Plagiarism and College Culture” (Cornell, 2009), and the editor of the recent volume “Ungrading: Why Rating Students Undermines Learning (and What to Do Instead) (West Virginia University Press, 2020). In her work, she draws on her background in cultural, linguistic, and psychological anthropology to ask questions about learning, and about the ways institutions shape and are shaped by cultural patterns. She is trying to move beyond complete relativism to make practical but principled recommendations..

Funding for New Colorado FAMLI Program

As you may know, in November 2020 Colorado voters approved Proposition 118, which resulted in the implementation of the Family and Medical Leave Insurance Program. This program, which takes effect in January 2024, makes paid family and medical leave benefits available to most Colorado employees who have a qualifying condition and who earned $2,500 over the previous year for work performed in Colorado.

The FAMLI program is funded through premiums paid by both workers and employers, starting in January 2023. The premiums through 2024 are set to 0.9% of the employees’ wages.

Accordingly, most Colorado employees will see a FAMLI premium deduction on their pay stubs beginning Jan. 1, 2023. However, CC has elected not to put this monetary burden on its faculty, staff, and student employees.  Instead CC intends to cover the entire amount of the premiums through 2023, at a total cost of $600,000 to the college. It should be noted that the funding for this program may impact the amount available to be allocated to salary increases in 2023.

While further guidance from the state on the FAMLI program will be forthcoming, additional information regarding the benefits available under the program can be found here. Please also feel free to email hr@coloradocollege.edu if you have any questions.
