“Silent Songs” Playlist

When the world is silent, the last thing I want to do is disrupt it. But interestingly, I don’t think sound is what disrupts silence. It might often be the vehicle for disruption, but not disruption itself. Do you get what I mean? Silence is there when I’m sitting in the snow with this kid who’d rather be breathing out cigarette smoke than the warmth of his insides. Silence is especially thick during times of grief, even while all you can hear is crying. Silence is my empty stomach. Silence is the moment right before a kiss. Silence makes everything louder, bigger, stronger, and simply more. I can’t get behind the idea that it’s the opposite of sound. I’m starting to think that silence is a vehicle for the prosperity of sound. Do you get what I mean? Anyway, silence and a life of lovely sounds are two best friends holding hands. Here are four songs that (I hope) will get that across. To you.

In terms of what actually does disrupt silence (since I’ve conveniently ruled out the broad definition of sound), I can’t be sure completely, but I have a few guesses:

  1. Un-kept promises
  2. A party without music
  3. A party with music but without dancing
  4. Money
  5. Instagram reels

Feel free to add the list, in your head or whatever. Add to the playlist too… I will love them all.
