Animal Collective – Painting With Album Review

https://open.spotify.com/album/04EajKw866bzJn3EW8HOdQ From their 2000 debut Spirit They’re Gone, Spirit They’ve Vanished to the release of the seminal Merriweather Post Pavillion and excellent Fall Be Kind EP in 2009, Animal Collective were a force to be reckoned with. The band released one fantastic record after another, each with a unique ever-evolving take on psychedelia. From the freak-folk meanderings of Sung Tongs to the eclectic, glitchy, psych-pop of Strawberry Jam, Animal Collective's distinctive brand of psychedelia was always on point. That is, until 2012’s polarizing, and, in my opinion, disappointing Centipede Hz. Centipede, more than any other Animal Collective record, had songs that were forgettable. The hooks were duller, the instrumentals muddier, and with the exception o...

Song of the Day: The Clean – Point That Thing Somewhere Else

https://open.spotify.com/track/2Hdc29xZCcYZiz0W9iEr1n In 1981, Roger Shepard started Flying Nun Records in Christchurch, New Zealand. He initially wanted to release music by local Christchurch bands, but Shepard's great success was releasing the music of Dunedin bands, like The Clean. The Clean were without a doubt the most influential band Flying Nun signed. Steven Malkmus of Pavement, Yo La Tengo, and Jay Reatard all site The Clean as a major influence. Their first single "Tally Ho!" and following EP "Boodle Boodle Boodle" set the template for the Dunedin Sound, which would become the dominant style of Kiwi Rock for the next decade. This track, "Point That Thing Somewhere Else" is the 5th and final track off of The Clean's 1982 EP Boodle Boodle Boodle.  The EP was recorded in a bedroom...

David Bowie – Blackstar Album Review

https://open.spotify.com/album/2w1YJXWMIco6EBf0CovvVN In his 1975 single "Golden Years", David Bowie sings "Never look back, walk tall, act fine." Thirty-five years later, it is apparent that Bowie took his own advice. David Bowie died on January 10, 2016, 18 months after being diagnosed with cancer, and only two days after his 25th and final studio album, Blackstar, was released. News of his illness and battle with cancer were kept secret; not even Bowie's closest friends knew. Even though Bowie was planning a follow-up to Blackstar, he new his days were numbered, and had for a while. The result is an eerie, cryptic, and stunning record that is arguably the farthest Bowie has ever forayed from straight up pop. Blackstar is, in short, Bowie's brilliant response to his impending death. Mu...

Song of the Day: Milo – Zen Scientist (feat. Myka 9)

https://open.spotify.com/track/5ip8NxzAUFcKFI2BRwaQ9B Last year was a ridiculously strong year for hip-hop, and I'd say Milo's sophomore album So the Flies Don't Come was one of the best. This track, like all on the record, are produced by Kenny Segal. His production is atmospheric, mellow, and off-kilter, which perfectly complements Milo's style. Milo doesn't rap with urgency, but he has a lot to say. His word play is intricate, witty, and cryptic.  Milo is able to make every line poignant and poetic, and his sarcastic, self deprecating humor shines through every once in a while. Myka 9 is featured on the hook, and the dude can sing. He gives a great performance, and his voice works perfectly with the production. All in all this track is fantastic. Give it a spin.
