Capstone Event Highlights Senior Projects

Five seniors from the Community Engaged Leadership (CEL) Program presented their projects at the CEL capstone event in May. The CEL Program combines academic and community experiences to equip students with critical thinking skills to address important social and political concerns. Students participate in meetings, workshops, retreats, and projects over the course of three years, culminating in a capstone project in collaboration with a community partner. A Grateful Graduate Gives Back

Going to Colorado College satisfied my need for adventure” When I was 16 in 1938, I decided to hitchhike out west. I was living in New Haven, Conn. My parents said it was all right with them but when the time to leave drew close, they withdrew their permission. So very early one morning I snuck out with just a small suitcase full of clothes and $10 in cash. My first ride was a milk truck heading to Derby, Conn. I hitchhiked all the way to Wisconsin, sending my parents just one postcard from Chicago. In Wisconsin, I headed to Madison to see my uncle, who was a professor of…

Alumni Explore Cuba

“One has to admire the human spirit’s will to survive and to do what one needs to do to create a life. Cubans love their country; they just want their lives to be better than the previous generation and their children to have better lives than theirs,” Anita Pariseau, director of alumni relations, said of her experience during CC’s first special block break. On March 30, 32 alumni and friends accompanied Pariseau on the sold-out trip to Cuba led by Associate Professor of Sociology Eric Popkin. Participants traveled for nine days, soaking in history, culture, and Cuban perspectives, and navigated historical context from a social and economic perspective with Popkin’s…

A Resource for the Rockies

In its 12th year, the State of the Rockies Project continues to be a critical resource for keeping the public informed about the conservation issues that matter most in the Rocky Mountain West. Each summer, the program hires several student interns who compile research for the annual State of the Rockies Report Card. Three of this summer’s interns talked about their motivations, goals, and experiences: Max Hittesdorf ’16, a sociology major from Fort Collins, Colo., said he became interested in environmental issues through his involvement with several food-related organizations on campus. His research focuses on sustainable and holistic ranching practices in the Rocky Mountain West. “I hope to gain a…

Conversation Pieces

It’s right there in the name: InterDisciplinary Experimental Arts. IDEA Space is an art gallery, sure, but it bursts out of that box to deliver enlightenment and inspiration wrapped in texture, color, shape, and line. Jessica Hunter-Larsen ’90 has been the curator since 2006, when she was handed a tabula rasa for the resource in…
