Energy-Waste Busters

Learning, Serving, and Slashing Energy Use, One Building at a Time A student energy-auditing and retrofitting program at Colorado College is advancing sustainability one building at a time, including the home in which the new college president and her family will live. “The students’ recommendations are the focus of our energy management design intent,” said Chris Coulter, director of CC facilities services, about work done to improve energy efficiency at the new president’s home on Wood Avenue. “Having their input has greatly facilitated communication and the delivery of sustainability goals,” said Coulter. In addition to working at Colorado College President Jill Tiefenthaler’s home, students also have conducted energy audits on CC’s Hulbert Center, Interdisciplinary…

New Tipi Heralds NASU's Pride

For the first time ever, CC’s Native American Student Union (NASU) has a tipi, made possible by a cooperative effort across campus. “It has really brought staff and students together,” said Suzi Nishida, advisor to the group. The Arapahoe-style tipi features lodgepole pines and is 27 feet tall and 18 feet in diameter. The tipi is being used to raise the profile of NASU on campus, said Carl Slater ’13, who, along with Amber Dornbusch ’11, co-chaired the student organization during the 2010–11 academic year. The selection of an Arapahoe tipi was intentional, Slater said, as Arapahoe Indians frequented the area. “We wanted to make people aware that long before…

Retiring and New Faculty

We asked this year’s three retiring professors what they plan to do. Their replies: Peggy Berg drama/dance My retirement “plan” is to have no plan at all! I love the way life unfolds in unexpected ways and I have every hope that my life will continue to surprise and delight me as I enter this new phase. Now that my greatest passion has evolved from dance toward yoga, I will continue to teach yoga whenever I can, and I will certainly take the time to practice yoga in long, unhurried, and steady sessions all by myself. Perhaps I’ll work at playing my accordion (yes, you heard that right!) and maybe…

Worner Center, Van Briggle Exterior Undergo Developments

Worner Center, Van Briggle Exterior Undergo Improvements Two major improvement projects have been undertaken this summer at CC: a renovation of the Worner Campus Center and an enhancement of the Uintah Street entrance to the college. Most of the improvements are focused on the main level, with the goal of transforming the dated and congested Rastall Hall into a dining area that is bright, sustainable, and easily navigated. The outdoor dining patio will be known as the Rawlings Patio, and will feature a plaque listing the 21 members…

From the President

Dear Alumni, Parents, and Friends of Colorado College: It is a great honor to address you as the new president of Colorado College. Thanks to those who have served before me, and to the contributions of countless faculty, staff, and alumni, your college is a beacon of liberal arts education. My family and I already feel right at home in a place that shares our values — great faith in the liberal arts, caring community, faculty-student engagement, experiential education, diversity — and that is willing to try some new things with the goal of promoting academic excellence. Before taking office on July 1, I read “Colorado College: A Place of Learning 1874–1999”…

Peak Profile: Darren Schwartz ’89

Darren Schwartz ’89 always believed he would end up in a ministry role. He majored in religion at Colorado College, and worked for his church before becoming a counselor. But his most recent career move surprised him. “I signed up for the Army almost three years ago, at the age of 41. I just felt a calling from the Lord to be in military ministry.” Darren is an ordained Southern Baptist minister and has a master’s degree in counseling. As an Army chaplain, he reports to a battalion commander “and I serve the religious and emotional needs of a military intelligence battalion of almost 300 soldiers.” Darren is stationed in Phoenix, Ariz., where his…
