Opening Convocation Kicks Off CC's 137th Year

Colorado College welcomed 538 first-year students and 31 transfer students on Sept. 6 at Opening Convocation at Shove Memorial Chapel. The ceremony marked the beginning of the college’s 137th academic year. Vincent Bzdek ’82, news editor for The Washington Post, gave the keynote address, titled “The Joshua Generation.” (Read his address.) Bzdek, who served as a news editor of the Catalyst, also is the author of two bestselling books, “Woman of the House: The Rise of Nancy Pelosi” and “The Kennedy Legacy: Jack, Bobby, and Ted and a Family Dream Fulfilled.” Also receiving an honorary degree was Diane Rayor ’80, a leader in the field of classics. In Memory of Bob McJimsey

A tree-planting ceremony was held in memory of Professor Emeritus of History Robert McJimsey on Oct. 4 on the north side of Palmer Hall in the Tutt Quad. The tree, a mountain ash, was a gift from the history department in honor of a colleague and friend. McJimsey, who joined CC’s history department in 1968, specialized in British history and early modern Europe.   He passed away on Sept. 3, 2009.

Dear Alumni, Parents, and Friends, “(T)he invitation of liberal learning,” said Michael Oakeshott,  is “…the invitation to disentangle oneself, for a time, from   the urgencies of the here and now and to listen to the conversation in which human beings forever seek to understand themselves.” Oakeshott delivered his words in his 1974 Abbott Memorial Lecture, on the occasion of Colorado College’s centennial. In 2010, the invitation to disentanglement seems even more enticing and indeed critical. The Colorado College mission, “to provide the finest liberal arts education in the country,” becomes fulfilled in myriad ways both inside and outside the classroom, by professors and non-professors alike. Meet Isabel Werner ’08, Young Alumni Trustee

What was it about the young alumni trustee position that interested you? I realized that the impact my time at CC had was immeasurable. It is thanks to CC, the high expectations from professors, the challenging classes, the dynamic dialogue, the strenuous schedule, and the intellectual people that I was able to move into a great job right out of college. I wanted to give back. I joined the Alumni Association Board in February 2009 and saw the young alumni trustee position as the next logical extension of my service to the college. CC Entertainment Group Kickoff Announcement

On December 2, 2010, the recently formed Colorado College Entertainment Group hosted its kickoff event at Soho House Los Angeles. This group, spearheaded by alumni J-T Ladt ’03 and founding members Ben Duhl ’99, Ted Miller ’86, Aaron Shure ’88, and Neal Baer ’78, was established to provide a networking infrastructure for those within the industry. All CC alumni, students, parents, and faculty who are involved in any aspect of the entertainment industry are welcome to join and attend the LA event.
