Point Of View: Alumnus Editor’s note: This essay originally appeared in The Denver Post in October 2014. He fell down the stairs and hit his head. The concussion cracked open the wall that, for two years, had kept in the red emotions and black memories from his deployment to Afghanistan. 2001 Bozena C. Welborne has accepted a tenure-track faculty position at Smith College in Northhampton, Mass., in the Department of Government. Bozena had previously been an assistant professor at the University of Nevada, Reno. 2002 Antonio “Tony” Rosendo was elected by his alumni peers to the Colorado College Board of Trustees. 1985 James Rice has been chosen as Patrick Henry Writing Fellow for the school year at State University of New York, Plattsburg. James is a professor of history at SUNY Plattsburg, and his written work includes the 2012 book, “Tales from a Revolution: Bacon’s Rebellion and the Transformation of Early America.” (Editor’s note: due to a typographical error, we are re-running this note) Bill C. Class Notes: ’50s, ’60s, and ’70s

1957 Anne Trostel Galbraith wrote an article about her mother, Helen Cogswell Trostel ’20, for the summer 2014 issue of the Cheyenne Mountain Kiva magazine. Helen was an accomplished artist, art teacher, and writer who continued working until she was past 90. She died at the age of 94 in 1989. 1959 Dave Van Metre and his wife, Carol Beery Van Metre ’60, were featured in the Omaha World Herald newspaper in June. The article called the Van Metres “local sports’ most valuable players” and said they are credited with helping raise $35 million to upgrade parks and athletic facilities in Omaha, outfitting Boys & Girls Clubs, and sprucing up weight…

Moving Forward as an Inclusive and Aspirational Community

The Butler Center’s story begins with the Colorado College Class of 1940. Student Ellis Ulysses Butler ’40 was one of the college’s first African-American students. The account of his time at CC depicts both struggle and success. Butler recognized that his years as an undergraduate provided value to his career and his life, despite challenges and tensions that accompanied his experience as a minority student. Butler invested in the college financially for years, including a significant gift in 2009. Building on the Block: Our Progress

The Colorado College community continues to complete and update components of the strategic plan, putting ideas into action. In 2013-14, the Center for Immersive Learning and Engaged Teaching funded 10 pilot projects that advanced the center’s vision. One of those successful projects was an adjunct writing course focused on senior theses. Molly Gross, the former associate director of the Writing Center who worked intimately with this project, said the pilot’s interdisciplinary nature created a sense of community that provided a safe space for student writers to collaborate and challenge one another. “The thesis is where they transition from being students to being professionals, and that skin can be uncomfortable.
