Announcing the 2024-2025 Off-Campus Blocks

The Study Away Fair is only 1 month away (February 1st), but here is your Sneak Preview of all the individual off-campus blocks being offered next year, so you can start shopping for the best option for you before you visit the programs at the Fair.

BK 2: Greek Archaeology: Prof. Sanjaya Thakur & Prof. Henry Fricke

The course examines the geologic history of the eastern Mediterranean basin and examines the impact of geologic and other environmental changes and events on cultures in ancient Greece and in the modern period through several case studies.

BK 2: Mathematical Symmetry in Spain: MA340, Prof. Molly Moran

The study of symmetry from a mathematical perspective. Symmetry groups of bounded figures, frieze patterns and wallpaper patterns in the Euclidean plane will be classified using the Mosaics, tiling, art, and architecture in Southern Spain as motivation.

BK 3: Gazing in Italy: PY130: Prof. Tomi-Ann Roberts

In both a classroom and in the “laboratory” of the museums, chapels, galleries, gardens and squares of Florence and Siena Italy, this course will examine how we “see,” “look,” “gaze,” “behold” works of art, theories and research on facial and bodily expression and embodiment, notions of individualism and identity. the role of empathy in aesthetic experience, and gender and sexuality, objectification, “the male gaze,”power

BK 4: In the Footsteps of Bach (Germany): MU398, Prof. Ofer Ben-Amots

With study at Leuphana University in Lüneburg, in Eisenach, Weimar, Arnstadt, Köthen and Leipzig  we will focus on and analyze related compositions, while exploring both the historical and social aspects of Bach’s time as we attend many concerts of Bach’s music.

BK 4: Performance Away-India: DA/TH232, Prof. Pallavi Sriram

This course introduces students to dynamic contemporary arts scenes in India. Scheduled around the Kochi Biennale – Asia’s largest interdisciplinary contemporary arts festival – as well as a residency with a contemporary theater company or traditional performance institution,  

BK 5: History Senior Seminar in Chicago: HY410, Prof. Jake Smith

This course travels to Chicago’s Newberry Library so that senior history majors may gather materials for their final research projects in a world-class library.

BK 5: Greek For Beginners (Athens): CL101, Prof. Sanjaya Thakur

Introduction to reading Attic Greek, the language of ancient Athens in its political, literary, and philosophical prime. We will also learn about the history of the Greek language and its considerable influence on English’s scientific vocabulary and literature.  

BK 5: Martyrs & Saints (Italy): RE200, Prof. Pamela Reaves

Encounter the history of Christian martyrdom and sainthood in Rome, Italy. Examines the beginnings of martyrdom in the early church, particularly in the context of the Roman Empire, and the legacies of the apostles Peter and Paul as well as the emergence of later saints, especially in the Catholic tradition.  

BK 5: Musical Crossroads (Panamá): MU228, Prof. Liliana Carrizo

An immersive musical and culture-based learning experience, the course is a hands-on exploration of the rich sonic and culinary tapestries that make up Panama’s musics and foodways, where the sounds and cuisines of Panama’s Indigenous populations and African immigrants combined with the music of its Andalusian settlers to create a unique set of soundscapes and culinary cultures.  

BK 7: Voice & the Non-Human (Ecuador): EV261/PH203/IT320, Prof. Amanda MInervini

This course interrogates anthropocentrism and human/nonhuman animal relations through a specialized, ecocritical and ecofeminist analysis of theoretical, visual and literary texts.

BK 7: Linking Literacy, Language, and Linguistics (UK): ED110, Prof. Lynne Fitzhugh

This course is an introduction to the science of comprehensive literacy instruction and linguistics.. designed to enhance teaching abilities, especially for those working with struggling beginning readers and writers who require targeted or intensive intervention, as well as English Language Learners. It will travel in both England and Scotland. 

BK 7: Politics, Film & Culture in New York City: FM200, Prof. Scott Krzych

The city, in all its myriad forms, is the classroom as this course intersects topics of film, culture, and the politics of the largest city in the nation.

BK 7: Art of Insurgency in Serbia & Bosnia: TH239/PS239, Prof. Shawn Womack

Investigates the arts’ relation to narratives of power–those stories that justify why certain structures dominate, and why alternatives do not. An examination into those arts that expose these narratives, reveal silenced alternatives, and present challenger stories that aspire to power themselves.  

BK8: Kinesiology-Nordic Research: HK260, Prof. Anthony Bull

The course is a combination of lectures and student presentations on campus in week 1, and presentations by Nordic researchers and tours of historically famous research institutes in Denmark, Sweden and Finland in weeks 2-4.  

BK 8: Turkish German Cinema (Berlin/Istanbul): GR220/GR320/FM205,

Prof. Ane Steckenbiller & Prof. Baran Germen

Visit both Berlin and Istanbul as the course examines the intersection of arts, culture, and politics for the Turkish population in Germany as well as Turkiye itself. 

BK 8: Gusto: Italian Food as Art, Culture, and Tradition: IT320, Prof. Amanda Minervini

This course includes readings on the cultural history Italian cuisine, and a hands-on part, in Abruzzo: in the kitchen with professional chefs, in a winery, and in a cheese-making facility. During our itinerant class, we will discuss, analyze and unravel a complex tapestry of taste and the history behind them.  

APPLICATIONS & AID

Applications for next year’s blocks open on the date of our Study Away Fair on February 1 and run through March 16. We recommend applying as early in the window as you can, as many faculty use rolling admissions to fill their rosters. 

You do not need to apply for aid separately.  All students who are approved for program rosters are automatically reviewed for a possible aid award. You will be notified of your aid status well before any program has its withdrawal deadline.

SUMMER BLOCKS AWAY 

Applications are open until January 22.

While it may be possible to apply after the 22nd, both roster spots and aid may be gone after that deadline.  We always recommend applying as early in the application window as possible.

How do I apply for a Summer Block Away?

It is pretty simple, really. just visit the Summit page dedicated to Global Education and you will see all the offerings available. Complete the application for the program (or programs) you prefer, and you are also automatically applying for aid as well.

Applications remain open until January 22, so you have all of Winter Break to consider your options if you wish.   Once applications are closed on January 22, all rosters will be reviewed and aid will be awarded by February 9th.  Apps will then re-open for late applications. 

We do recommend applying early if you can, as some programs use rolling admissions and may close before January 22.  

Aid is avaialble to students approved to join a program who normally receive need-based aid to attend CC. An aid award can range from 20% of the anticipated cost of the program (program fee + estimated airfare) up to 90% coverage.

What is a Wild Card and how does it apply to Summer Study Away?

A Wild Card is basically an automatic “grant” that ensures that CC students do not pay tuition for the first summer course they take at CC.  It applies to on-campus and off-campus summer courses offered by CC, and it is automatically applied to remove the tuition charge the first time you enroll in a summer course. 

It cannot be used for academic year courses or courses offered outside of CC, but it does apply to all CC Summer Blocks Away.  It removes the tuition fee, but not the program fee (travel expenses).  That is what the Summer Block Aid is designed to do.

What if None of the Summer Blocks Away Work for Me?

If there is not a summer block which meets your educational goals, you can petition (also on Summit) for an independent summer study away program offered by any accredited provider or partner.  Several of CC’s semester away partners also offer summer courses.  However, no CC aid can be used for a non-CC summer course, so the full cost of any non-CC summer program abroad would be yours to cover.  It is an optoin, but we always recommend looking at the CC Blocks Away first.  Even if there is not one that speaks to your major, there is almost certainly a course that will help you with graduation requirements or interest you as an elective.

WHO WILL BE THERE?

Hopefully you, but also representatives from all the 2024-2025 Faculty Led Blocks, Half-Semester, and Semester programs, and, we also expect up to 30 of our partner providers, representing nearly 150 programs all over the globe.  

WHY SHOULD I GO TO THE FAIR? 

It is the one time all year when you can shop a wide range of study away options from 12 days up to a full year.  You can speak with the faculty who are taking their courses off campus, explore language programs, or explore options for a semester or even a full year away. 

It is a full length buffet of options and opportunities. 

All we are missing is coconut shrimp and a chocolate fountain. 

SEMESTER SPOTLIGHT

Through our partners around the world, CC is able to offer nearly 150 different semester away options.  This month we highlight three of the options you can choose from.

1. IHP from SIT: Climate Change: The Politics of Land, Water and Energy Justice

A single program that takes you to Morocco, Nepal, Peru and the USA to explore issues of climate justice. Comparative and penetrating, this is focused, topic-based program. 

2. IFSA: Study at the University of Sydney

An open-topic semester at one of Australia’s finest universities, allowing you to study

what you want, in a wide range of disciplines from the sciences to the arts.

3. Conflict, Peace & Transition in Northern Ireland (Augsburg U.)

A full semester in Derry, complete with internship experience as well as focused study

of political, religious, and cultural conflict. You will live, study, and work in a community

that has grappled with ongoing divisions and conflict, but is emerging and healing. 

These are just three of nearly 150 options for a semester away. 

And all approved CC partner semesters are designed to cost you no more than you would pay to be in Colorado, with aid that travels with you. 

 WHAT NEXT?

Just a quick reminder that if you have been approved by the faculty leader for a block away for Fall 2023 or Spring 2024, you should return to Summit to complete the post-acceptance forms and confirm your intention to join the course.  This will give the faculty the ability to provide you with the registration code needed so you can enroll in Banner and locks in your seat.  

CHECK YOUR PASSPORT

A reminder to check your passport and make sure that it is valid at least 6 months past the end of your study away program.  Many countries require this 6-month buffer and may not let you board the plane if your passport expires too soon after the program and your return flight date.

ORIENTATION MEETINGS

All blocks away have predeparture orientation meetings, typically 1-2 blocks before departure.  If you are not sure if you know when the meeting will be scheduled, please speak with your course’s faculty leader.  You do not want to miss vital information about the course, the travel plan, course expectations, and travel recommendations. 

WAITLISTED FOR A PROGRAM?

This is not uncommon.  Students dropping from programs is also very common, and since being on the waitlist commits you to nothing, there is no harm in staying on the waitlist for a program.  Of course, look into other summer plans, but it is possible for faculty to call students up from the waitlist up until the first day of the block before the program’s block, for example, the first day of Block 5 for a Block 6 program.  If you are invited to join a program, we will review your application for aid eligibility at that time and will notify you before you are asked to commit to the program.  Sometimes a bit of patience can really pay off.

Updated regularly, this site is your one-stop shop for information, quick guides and “how to” manuals, and links to all our partner organizations. Students examine the experiences of marginalized people in Germany, particularly how they resist and reproduce oppression through multidisciplinary critical perspectives

 Ecology & Management of Shallow Lakes (Czech Republic): EV320, Prof. Miro Kummel

This applied limnology course with the focus on (1) ecosystem and landscape level processes, (2) population level processes, (3) fishery management, conservation and ecosystem services, and (4) the unique history and culture within which the ancient anthropogenic ecosystem operates. 

Greek & Roman Art (Italy): CL223/AH207/HY220, Prof. Sanjaya Thakur

Survey of the archaeology, art, and history of ancient Greece and Rome and their influence from antiquity to the modern period.  

Kenya’s Maasailand: Indigeneity in the Postcolonial British Commonwealth (Kenya):

PH203, Prof. Alberto Hernandez-Lemus

Hosted by the Maasai people at the Dopoi Center, the course will address the complex relationship between Indigenous communities and the State under colonial and postcolonial conditions.

Shakespeare and London (UK): EN225/EN405, Prof. Steven Hayward

This class will experience productions of Shakespeare’s works and by explore the cities and the countryside where he lived and wrote.   

Cultural Studies in Senegal: CO200/FR201/FR317, Prof. Ibrahima Wade and Prof. Nene Diop

This Culture course, taught in English (with credit in French option), will investigate and discuss Senegalese culture hrough Field trips, reading of novels, selected historical and sociological documents,, guest lectures by writers/researchers and university profs., films and documentaries, attendance of selected live cultural events, etc.    

Spanish Language in Spain: SP111/SP211/SP305/SP306, Directed by Prof. Carrie Ruiz

The program offers 3 levels of Spanish: Beginner (SP111), Intermediate (SP 211) and Advanced (SP 305 and SP 306). It is a 2-block, 2-unit program.  

Monks & Monarchs: A History of Christianity in Great Britain: RE200, Prof. Pamela Reaves

Students will explore the history of Christianity in Great Britain as they travel in England and Scotland. 

Topics in Printmaking: The Art of the Boat  (Utah): AS216, Prof. Kate AItchison

This course that will explore the concept of a BOAT as relief print, functional form, and fine art object.  Taking place in remote Southeast Utah on the Yestermorrow Design School Campus, the course will be divided into three parts: design and carving of the hulls, construction of the boats themselves, and finally a multi-day aquatic journey with the boats built during the course.   

APPLICATION

Applications for Summer 2024 opened on November 30 and run through January 22. Students do not need to apply for aid separately.  All students who are approved for program rosters are automatically reviewed for a possible aid award. We highly recommend that all students apply by or before the 22nd to ensure their best chance to obtain aid.  We do not expect there to be aid available for late applicants.

PLANNING TO TAKE A CLASS OFF CAMPUS

FOR A DAY, A FEW DAYS, A FULL BLOCK?

Please complete the required CANVAS course “Taking Academic Courses Off-Campus” first. 

The Center for Field Study and Global Education has spent a part of the summer revising, updating, and improving the Canvas course for faculty and staff called “Taking Academic Courses Off-Campus”.  It includes guidance and college policy on everything from transportation to per diem, staffing to emergency management plans.  It is essentially our handbook for all Off-Campus travel with students, and it is required for all faculty who plan to take students off our campus as part of an academic course. .

If you are planning to take students off campus for anything from a day trip to a full semester away, you are required to complete the essential modules for each travel type (Domestic Field Trip, International Travel, Blocks or Semesters Away) prior to departure.  Completing the course once allows you to travel with students throughout the upcoming year.  There is also a set of modules for your Second Responsible Adult to complete to ensure that they are familiar with expectations and requirements for their role with your traveling group..  The course is divided into several short modules so that you can review the material at your own pace, and does include several check-in quizzes so that your completion of the course can be verified.

Just what is “CPT”?

CPT or Curricular Practical Training is a program which international students on an F-1 visa (the majority of CC’s international population) can apply for during their 4 years at the college.  It allows them to work, intern, or engage in volunteering opportunities outside of the college as part of their educational experience, particulary as a practical component within their major field of study.  This is something not permitted by their student status without CPT authorization.  In most cases at CC, students use CPT for summer internships, but there are others that may occur during the school year on a part-time basis, including volunteer work.

What should I know about CPT?

Here are five things international students, and faculty who advise them, should know about CPT:

1) CPT is used to authorize off-campus work, paid or unpaid internship, even many volunteering opportunities.

2)  Engaging in these activities without approved CPT authorization can endanger a student’s immigration status and ability to stay at CC. So, when in doubt, have students speak with ISSS well before they start any of these activities.

3) Students must have a declared major to qualify, which usually means sophomore year or later.

4) Key faculty roles include helping a student find opportunities that can be tied to their major and then making the case within the application process that the experience is tied closely to the work of the major.

5)  A CPT authorized experience can be of varying lengths, but if a student engages in 12 months of CPT it could impact their ability to stay and work in the USA after graduation (Through a status extension called OPT.)

What is my role in helping a student qualify for CPT?

The primary request made of faculty, often a department chair or faculty advisor, is to write a letter of support which outlines how the proposed experience aligns with, contributes to, and is “integral” to the student’s education with in their major. That word “integral” is essential, because the goal of all CPT experiences is to provide practical training within a major field of study.

What can faculty do to maximize a student’s chances of approval for CPT?

The key contribution of the faculty member is to help the student make the case that the proposed experience is part of their academic and pre-professional program, that it is “integral” (there it is again) to their educational path and their field of study.  In some fields and with some experiences this is much easier to define, but all majors are capable of making strong cases for students if the proposed experience is truly an outgrowth of their academic program and not simply a summer job or internship disconnected from their studies.  That is the key, and that is how you can help our international students not only receive authorization but also have meaningful experiences in work, internships, and volunteering tied to their academic goals and studies.
