#GRADSCHOOLBOUND: Jared Russell ’18

Finishing the #gradschoolbound campaign with a bang, we want to offer so many congratulations to Jared Russell ’18, who has received Anne Wexler Master’s in Public Policy Award through the Australian-American Fulbright Commission. The award covers a two-year master’s degree in a field related to public interest, and includes full tuition, travel, and research stipends. After graduation, Jared will be moving to Melbourne to sit for his Master of Philosophy in Law at the University of Melbourne Law School.

I am excited about this opportunity because it allows me study exactly what I want while also being in the best possible setting. While in Australia, I will be researching the connection between climate change and refugee status, specifically looking at how the international community will classify individuals who are displaced from rising sea levels in the Pacific. Unfortunately, this will be a major problem within the next two decades, and there are no laws currently in place dictating where these people can go or to what aid they are entitled. I will be able to both research the situation and advocate for those that are affected.

My advice to CC students would be to start early. Senior year goes by so quickly, and there are so many deadlines at the beginning of the year. Whether it’s taking the standardized tests or simply completing the apps, it’s easy to get behind. Preparing during junior year and the summer before senior year is critical to staying above water when everything comes due in the fall semester.

Congratulations, Jared! We’re so incredibly proud of you!
