Course: History of San Francisco

St. Mary’s University – Fall 2016

Lindsey Passenger Wieck, an Assistant Professor of History & Director of Public History at St. Mary’s University, recently designed and taught an undergraduate course on the history of San Francisco in which students used StoryMaps to delve into the rich spatial history of San Francisco. Professor Passenger Wieck writes:

I conceived of this course as a way for students to learn the city’s history while developing digital literacy. Students designed and implemented digital projects that communicated historical content using digital tools. Scaffolding skills to build up to the final projects, students shared and analyzed primary sources via Twitter, blogged as a means of crafting historical analysis for a public audience, and used digital mapping tools throughout the semester.
